fanvids at DragonCon ? - If there's a thread on that, I missed it. I'm sure this has to have been brought up. For those who've not made DragonCon before, they run their own little in house t.v. gig between panels and I'm guessing in the hotel rooms. What progress has been made to get a few ( at least one ) fanvids shown at DragonCon? Even if it's just in the big convention rooms prior to the panels, that would so pump up the crowd!

I know very little about these conventions, however I am currently working on a video that will be displayed at I-con in New York.

Sadly I live in Florida.

My Serenty video is already to be one of those seen. I think that the makers of Fanvids should get together online and discuss this for themselves.

Any Fan Video makers reading this be sure to send me an E-mail: Pangaea_Films@Verizon.net

ImEarly...I fired off an e-mail to the folks at DragonCon, just for the hell of it. I didn't recommend any particular fanvid at this time, cause I didn't want them thinking I was just trying to pitch my own (or a friend's) work on them. Having gone to a grand total of 1 DragonCon, I'm still a novice in the way of..well, anything connected to such things.

I am just so floored at the quality of the vids I've seen, I'd be willing to pay a pretty penny if someone would put those down on say...a DVD ? There, I said it..now may the wheels of capitalism start spinning! (crosses fingers )

I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage, I have never been to any Conventions, and I know nothing about DragonCon, I was contacted by an event coordinator who will be at I-Con in Long Island, New York. I couldn’t tell you if there will be Fan Vids at other Conventions, but let me know if they will be accepting entries?

I do however believe that most videos out there need to be reevaluated. Most come from low quality versions of our favorite show. When these videos are compressed even further, their quality is degraded so badly it makes me sad.

I have made, several AMV’s and Serenity, I am working on a second video for Firefly now, but I will tell you this.

Hi!
I would really be interested in learning how to make videos. I'm sooo impressed with what others have done. However, I know next to nothing about it. Is VOBS a software program to burn DVDs? Also, are most people burning their original DVDs onto their hard drives and then cutting clips from them? Any advice would be really appreciated! It'd give me something to do here in Korea

Sadly no, most people are using rips that they downloaded from the internet to make their videos.

If you plan to make Fan Vid's I suggest you rip the DVD's you own to your HD and then get started. Mine is an example of this. It's bigger then most you'll find, but it is worth the quality.

If you haven’t Downloaded my Video then do so now, it is Called Serenity and is located here...

http://homepage.mac.com/rocketplane/FileSharing8.html

Making decent quality videos is an art and it takes some time to get there, try this link to get you started, it's for AMV's mind you, but it will get you started in the right direction...

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/videogetb.html

If this is too complicated, then feel free to E-mail me with any questions, my E-mail address is posted somewhere on this post, or you can grab it from the end of my Fan Vid.

Since this is a tutorial for AMV's I can also upload a few of my projects for you. Just say the word.

Also, what editing program will you use? I use Adobe Premiere 6.5 and Adobe Premiere Pro.
I also have experience with Photoshop, and After Effects. When I first started I used Movie Maker 2.0 which is freeware. If you are a Mac user I can point you in the right direction.

Using DVDs as source material for vids is fine, but you do have to remember that there are shows that are being vidded that aren't available on DVD just yet. TV rips are the only source for clips. When I started doing Firefly vids, those rips were the only way to go since the DVD set was not yet released. One of these days I'll go back and remaster the lot of them when I have the time.

Fair enough, you are accurate.

There are still a great many shows that are not available on DVD. I didn’t intend to sound condescending trust me, my first videos that were made on Movie Maker 2.0 were horrible, I mean dreadful. However I was using poor quality rips and I had no knowledge of Codec’s and compression ratios. Besides, I love a great deal of the fan vid’s that are available through FFF society.

I purchased After Effects 6.5, Adobe Premiere 6.5, Photoshop CS, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Microsoft Office System Professional 2003 for $105.00 at a local auction. I think everyone there wanted to buy watches. HA HA HA HA!!!!!

You can try download.com for demo downloads, if you are looking for a full version, you will have to go through Bittorrent, I don’t recommend Kazza, too many dummy files. If you are not familiar with Bittorrent, just try Altavista, (I hate Google). I would post some recommendations, but I don’t feel comfortable posting such things on this website.

The first step to making a good vid is storyboarding. Do a good job at step one and the whole project lays right down for you.

1: Take the song and play it in something with a timer. Make a detailed log of when each musical phrase begins and ends.

2. Imagine which shot from the series you want in each musical phrase. When I did "Falling" I ripped the entire series to my laptop.

3. Clip the shots you want to something compatible with your editing program. I use iMovie, so I exported small clips to DV format, then imported into iMovie.

4. Assemble your clips in an editor.

5. Apply transitions. In "Falling For the First Time" I used simple half-second dissolves. The transition time means that you have to allow for the fact that each clip eats an extra half second, so consider this in your planning.

6. Render. I used DiVX for portability, but some people inexplicably prefer WMV (Darn Microsoft poodles).

7. Distribute to all your friends. Bask in accolades or constructive criticism, as appropriate.

Concept

A video concept is a deceptively simple thing. The best way to describe it is as a vision. What you want the vided to be, how you want the viewer to feel, what you want them to think, to understand. In short, why you're making the video. This is hardly an exhaustive discussion, so what is possible goes far above and beyond what I make mention of. It should also be noted that sometimes a concept doesn't need to be stronger than a video and a song - not every video needs a strong concept. Attempting to strengthen a concept in a video that doesn't need it can kill the video. That said, when to apply the concept and when not to is a matter of taste for the editor. After all, the overall goal of any video is to communicate something, right?

STORYTELLING

The idea here is both very restricted and very open-ended, depending on what story you want to tell and how you want to tell it. Some videos retell the story, others tell entirely new stories. There's a large area in between, where the story is told but changed or a twist is added.

Synch

Synch is the core of the editing process itself. It is the connection between music and video. Without synch, you have video, and you have music, but no real connection between them.

MUSICAL

AKA Beat synch. This is where you cut, fade, use effects in time to the music. While sometimes simple to execute, this can get very complicated very rapidly. Many songs will have more than one musical line going at a time, and sounds of varying volume and tone. As an editor, you have to pick what you think is important, and synch to that. Sometimes the music itself presents a clear lead line to work with, but this is frequently not the case. What you show, how strongly you show it, and how you show it are all choices to be made.
Most videos make use of beat synch heavily. To ignore the music itself is considered extremely bad form, most of the time. Without extremely good reason, such as comedy, the video ending, etc., missing a significant change in the music is considered a major slip-up on the part of the editor.

LYRICAL

AKA Literal synch. In short, you match what is being said to what you show. There are varying degrees of lyrical synch. The connection between what is said and what is shown may be readily obvious, heavily symbolic, or nearly anywhere in between. One type that deserves special mention is the comedic association: an association made specifically to make fun of something or someone, or something absolutely ridiculous. The associations should be ones that the viewer can understand, though. If the associations are so strange or symbolic that the viewer can't understand them, then the editor has likely slipped up. Unless they're trying to make an incomprehensible video, that is.
A second type that deserves special mention is lip-synching. This is where a character (or characters) mouth movements are matched to the lyrics such that the character (or characters) appear to be singing or speaking. It is considered good form to lip synch entire lines at a time, with partial lip synch being somewhat looked down on.

Effects

There are two schools of thought on effects, one at either end of a broad spectrum. One school holds that effects should only be used to further the concept of the video. The other school holds that effects should be used just because they look cool. I’m going to refer to these as the meaningful camp and the appearance camp. Most people, it should be noted, are somewhere in between, using effects to further their musical sync.

MEANING (aka pretentious artiste)

The point of view here is somewhat more complicated that of the other camp. The idea is that effects should only be used in order to heighten the impact, strengthen the message, or somehow enhance the emotions felt by the viewer. This sometimes leads to symbolism, and other things that frequently only make total sense to the editor.

APPEARANCE (aka “Shiny!!!!”)

The point of view of this camp is pretty simplistic: if it looks cool, go for it. No meaning required. The effects don’t need to be there for any conceptual reason, but they look cool, so why not?

MUSICAL SYNCH

Most effects are used for musical synch. When the audio doesn’t justify a hard cut, or a hard cut won’t do, an effect is frequently what fits the bill. Color shifts, freeze frames, inversions, crossfades, and more are commonly used for musical synch.

AVISynch is the only way to properly edit Vobs in a serious editor.

If you don't know what AVIsynch, then take the time to read this:

I have a question about distributing fan vids. I just made my first vid ever, and I would like a little feedback on it. I don't really have hosting capabilities. Is there a site out there that hosts other people's vids? And if I did manage to find somewhere to host it, where's the best place to post the link for people to view it? Here? Or is there another forum somewhere meant for this.

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.
