REGINAROADIE

I was always happy to hear that Universal picked up FIREFLY as a movie franchise, because despite some of the beaureaucratic shit that happened in the 80's with a lot of their fantasy flicks (DUNE, BRAZIL, LEGEND), Universal has always had a policy of being a director friendly studio that encourages creative freedom. Even though they might allow Stephen Sommers to piss on their horror legacy with VAN HELSING, they'd also allow Paul Greengrass the opportunity to envigorate the spy thriller with THE BOURNE SUPREMACY.

This is a studio that helped launch the careers of Lucas, Spielberg, Zemekis and many others. Also in the 80's they also allowed Cronenberg and Carpenter to make VIDEODROME and THE THING. They've been home to Lon Chaney, Abbot and Costello, DeLauentiis, Hitchcock, Grazer/Howard, John Ford, Thalberg and von Stroheim and produced a ton of classics, to many to mention here.

So I am optimistic that Whedon and the crew of SERENITY will have a permanent fixture in the legacy of Universal. And lets hope that SERENITY will match the grosses of MEET THE FOCKERS. Or at least half of that. Hell, even a third or a quarter would be enough.

A quote by Joss on Universal's policy. "The incessant meddling of the studio: where was it? We waited and waited, what, are they all too busy and important to take the time to ruin my little film? This is Hollywood, people. Learn our ways and customs while you're here. Sheesh."

So what do you guys think? Will Universal kill our beloved crew or bring it to life?

"NO HAI ES BANDAI. THERE IS....NO.....BAND. AND YET....WE HEAR A BAND."

My response is pending September 30th. If they delay it AGAIN, or otherwise eff it up, I think I might have to go with "bad."

Heh! I liked Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman is cool), and I thought that The Bourne Supremecy was overrated..

It will be the best film in history until such time as I am proven wrong. At that point I will invent a new movie in my mind, and that, though not as good as what could have been, will be the best movie ever.

I will partake in this delusion as often as I am able.

Such is the way of a writer’s mind, if reality does not meet expectations a new reality will be created.

I'm taking my cue from the director,
and so far Joss seems very happy with the way Universal has treated him....

now I'M wondering about Warner Brothers...
will Wonder Woman be as good of an experience?
Will he get to hire who he wants?
Will it really be his movie?

Regarding Universal postponing Serenity
I think it was a smart move,
the movies that are coming up through April & May
might have over-shadowed our little BDM
plus there was that whole delay with getting the best composer for the project....

I can tackle this. Universal are meeting the euro distributors today, and giving them a full morning of meetings on Serenity.

They want it to be a success. Obviously - it's their investment. However, they're involving joss in everything, which is a very good sign.

I've seen Serenity. Trust me. Universal = very good thing. They even gave us Browncoat postcards as we left the test screening.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Simple: good.

Why you ask? Again, simple. If Joss and the cast are happy, and they say that 'Versal was supportive, did not meddle, and they are enthusiastic about what they have seen so far, how could it be anything but good.

Er, no, the meeting didn't tend to go like that.

There's no point trying to make Universal an enemy here - they are doing their best to make Serenity sell. They truely appear to believe in the movie (as the exec at our UK screening said - they are "very excited").

How different does that sound to Fox's treatment of Firefly?

It's also worth noting the distribution dates by non-US companies isn't set by Universal.

I was trying for funny more than whiney.

Here's the whiney tho: So it's the distributors shooting themselves in the engine? Why? The DVD sales not big enough to warrant simultaneous release? To re-use the physical material (now of poor quality) and reduce copy costs? Not enough time to dub? Distributors owned by Fox?
