I’m creating a Serenity/Firefly poster on which I’d like to put signatures from as many browncoats as I can fit in. Since I can’t possibly go around the world to see you all in person *wishing I could* I’d like you to send me a picture of your signature:

- You can sign your username OR your real name OR sign one and the other in brackets OR you can have a signature that resembles nothing at all :-) , but please put your username somewhere so I know whose signature it is.

- Use a thick pen, so it will appear clearly on the montage,

- Sign on a white plain paper, using black or a dark colour,

- You can then scan it or take a digital picture of it,

- You can either post a link to the picture here, or send it to me at flanatic_flo@yahoo.co.uk

Does anybody know a place where I could have it printed? Once I finish it (hopefully, I will be done by the end of April) I’ll try to make it available for any browncoat interested.

Originally, this is to make a poster for the BDH. But then, I will give it to browncoats as well.

Innocent (or maybe dumb ) as I am, I didn’t realise asking for handwritten autographs of browncoats could be a problem. I just thought that it would be nice to give something to the BDH at the Starfury convention, that it would be funny to give them a poster with our autographs (instead of them always giving us theirs) and that it would be cooler the autographs were handwritten.

Now, if it still bothers you, feel free not to give anything or to give your autograph nicely typed in a pretty font. How’s that?

petitrhino:

One thing I might add to an otherwise unique and splendid idea: The Flans could use their screen names, if the idea of using their actual 'payroll signature' causes fears of identity theft.

I can just envision my signature pasted to an online declaration of war on macaroni and cheese, and all the infidels who eat it...

Sign-ificantly,

zoid

P.S.
Now, if I could just find the scanner I haven't used in 6 years...

Mine should also be "winging", in a sorta literal sense. Well, "perching" may be the more appropriate term.

Likely I uckf**ed it upway. Much like with the zed feller, the scanner has been gathering dust for some number of years now. Also, given that I'm operation-systemically challenged on the new 'puter, I'll consider it a win if the weblink works.

petitrhino:

It finally occurred to me that I don't need my scanner (grrr!). All I need -- or anyone, for that matter -- is Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, the Gimp, or some other graphics program. One can even do a suitable job using the standard MS Paint (color black, paint brush or spray paint tool). MS Paint won't allow a crop and turns out a 640x480 image, but saved as JPG it's only 15.5KB. That means petit would have to crop and resize it, but the 15KB file size means we won't swamp her email with attachments of enormous size.

While it would be best to send her a pre-cropped signature, I suspect she's having to resize all the sigs anyway, since she never specified a desired size.

The point is, if you've got a computer with the standard applets installed, and five minutes of your time, everyone can create a signature for her poster. Even this late in the day (she needs to have it completed NLT COB Friday), I challenge everyone to add their sig to this great fan appreciation idea.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
petitrhino: I hope you weren't the guy who posted his cleavage on the NOB (*urp!*). If so, please invert all the pronouns...

P.P.S.

i think a pda is even better, even though i got to decide between pixelated mess and a look as if it was the sig of a six year old *sigh*.

important detail to keep in mind: print resolutions are much higher than screen resolutions. trust me, i spent a full afternoon recreating a badly scanned character sheet just to realize that after printing it looked just as bad as the unaltered scanned version (plain ugly aliasing on the letters). in short: do them in high resolution or set the dpi of the image to more realistic value for print (laser printers will already do at least 600dpi). also, try not to use jpg compression, the blocky artifacts might be a lot more visible after printing. png uses losless compression and should work pretty well for that kind of thing (in fact, even gif might be better and smaller than jpg if you have sharp edges and only a few shades of grey).

Jared:

As long as petitrhino (or perhaps 'batgurl'?) is sizing down, rather than up, and as long as the signature is done in monochrome (black/red/green/blue letters on white background), saving them as smaller JPG should be just dandy. You're not going to get blocky unless you try to blow up a JPG, or unless it's a 16 or greater color image with lots of dithering.

For the purposes of a simple signature, one should stick to simple, in deference to the requester (batgurl) and the amount of work she's doing for the benefit of others. If she starts getting 500KB+ attachments from 1000 Browncoats, we become more a plague than an act of love for her. As we used to say in the AF, 'K.I.S.S.'...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
As long as she composes the poster before she prints it -- and how could she not? -- the resolution of the composite is all that matters, not the rez of the individual sigs. Based on her example posted in the BlueSun Room, I'd say it looks like she knows what she's doing, and leave it at that...

the problem is that in print it might very well be blown up. if you take the "low" quality setting of 600dpi that means a 640x480 image will be little more than one inch wide. im simply cautioning against trying to make it too small and using the look on a screen as reference (because of above painful experience).

Quote:

they arent independent. the bigger she makes the rsolution of the composite, the smaller the sigs will be when inserted and the more a small sig needs to be blown up.

Quote:

id assume that is a scaled down version to spare our bandwith, depending on how big the final poster is supposed to be. to play it safe i would take the image on screen, zoom it until it is about the size of the printout and then zoom in twice as much to get an idea of how the print will look.

if 27x41 really is the typical size for posters that would probably mean at least 200dpi to look good, ie. a 5400x8200 image.

i uploaded the reason why i wanted to point this out:

with my usual 1280x1024 it's the exact same size on screen as the printout, but as paper doesnt glow and you tend to get closer the edges will look a lot sharper. to get an idea of what the printout looks like, zoom it to about 200% and look at the letters. put simple: i screwed up and wasted a lot of time because i created a canvas that was 28x20cm at screen resolution.

another screwup when cropping:

Jared and petitrhino (which does sound more like 'little rhinoceros' than a variety of bat, BTW):

I suppose a pertinent question would be the intended size of the print. Is she going with full poster or more of a handbill size, like the Serenity movie handbills given as freebies at most of the cons this past year. I always assumed a handbill size that could be produced in quantity at a reasonable cost, would be space-saving (since the intent is to give them to BDH's and you would ideally like them to be retained, rather than 'round-filed'), and frameable as mementos for a lifetime. Full-size posters are cumbersome and a headache for printing, as Jared has undoubtedly experienced. I'm unsure what the values of some important variables are: 1) What final print size? 2) What size, depth and rez for sigs (standardizing this is more important for full-poster than handbill); et cetera...

Jared: petitrhino's email address is posted above. Perhaps you might volunteer to help her with proofing?

Respectfully,

not quite sure how. best i could offer would be making a color printout at the intended size and saying how it turns out. though that would be based on the assumption that a color laser is closer to a professional print than inkjet printers.

and the size.. guessing from the uploaded version id expect a4 to look good and a3 to be ok (unless somebody has the urge to rub his nose on the paper *g*). though the final size might mostly be a question of how many sigs will come together?

speaking about sigs: still looking horrible, but the best i will get out of these fingers (which probably havent written a single word in years) and of course a readable but painfully unsuitable something

but now back to finding things to write about the so far neglected bdh on my "non-fan site" *fg*

Thanks you for the many advice Zoid and Jared. It's a might confusing, but it's good advice to have.

The file is in 200dpi and yes, I made it smaller to post it here. I can remember exactly but it's something like 3000*5000 (maybe?)

I would like to make it into a medium sized poster (A2 format), but might choose a size smaller 18*12 (that's ~60*40 cm).
That's for the BDH.

AFTER THAT, for the browncoats, I'll see. I won't take care of this before May. Sorry guys if you wanted the poster quickly, but I don't want to make it available before the BDH got theirs. I'm sure you understand.

Another thing: when I get a autograph by email, I REPLY EVERY TIME. If you sent yours and didn't get a reply, send it again.
If you had a reply, and it's not on the latest version, don't worry, you're on my list and you'll be added

Oh, and 74 autographs so far
