Well my roommate just tried to kill himself last night. Thank you for your sympathy. Watching firelfly really raised my spirits today after the foremetioned night. I was wondering if firefly helped anyone else get through any hard times? He's fine by the way, so don't worry.

Woooh I feel like I was just mauled by Jesus.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Glad to hear your roommate is okay. Hope they work out whatever issues they are having.

As to Firefly helping past some rough times, it most definitely has on one occasion. My best friend, who was like a younger brother to me, had never heard of the show. I introduced him to Firefly and got him hooked. Anyway, we kind of had a pretty bad falling out (lllooonnnngggg story) and we haven't spoken in over a year. Watching Firefly helped me to work through that rough spot by keeping me laughing.

Having Firefly on in the background helps me to clean my house. :)

Make sure your friend gets some counseling, if possible. Good luck! Glad he's all right.

As someone who is going through a really bad time himself, I can only say that I am very worried about your friend. If he's okay for now, that's good but he MUST get counseling and it must be regular. Our thoughts are with both of you.

I filed for divorce in January from my husband of 19 years. I go to court tomorrow (3-31-05) to finalize it. Firefly, FFF.net and every person on this wonderful site has helped me through an extremely tough year. I am grateful to each and every one of you.

Mal-licious

I think I will add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.

ZapActionsDower:

I'll echo the advice of others and say your friend should obviously get counseling. As an attempted suicide, he undoubtedly will, like it or not.

Not so obviously, I think you should book yourself an hour with a counselor, too. Just as a precaution. Being that close to someone (by which I mean physical proximity, not necessarily emotional intimacy) can have unexpected consequences. You should talk over the situation -- debrief the experience -- with a professional, preferably one who specializes in such crises.

Just call the hospital where your roommate is recovering and ask to speak to a counselor. Tell 'em you'd like to discuss the situation with somebody. They'll hook you up.

Chances are, you escaped without more than a psychic bruise or two. But you might be surprised at the flood of emotions you never knew were getting pent up behind a protective wall. Better to drain that wound before it gets infected...

Consult a doctor.

Respectfully,

zoid

I'm sending a special positive thought your way. Things will get better, I promise.

You're going to the beach this weekend, right? So which do you prefer: Sunny and forgetful, or rainy and introspective? I'll see what I can do...

Mal-licious, you are one of the mainstays of humor and provocative thought on this site. It pains me to know you've been going through such a hard time. I hope the worst is over and the bright days are ahead.

Zapactionsdower, Zoid has some good advice about tending to your own needs. Talking to an objective third party could really help.

I know it sounds corny but just like Mal stands with his crew, we have to follow that example and stand with each other.

Zoid,

I'd LIKE sunny and forgetful, if you can swing it. But I'm thinkin' it's going to be the other one, just 'cuz.

Mal-licious

I think I will add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.

Batmarlowe,

I get the "humor" and the "provocative" but the "thoughts" part is stumping me. I'm just the thread 'jacker around these parts. I leave the thinking up to Zoid and his crowd!

Zap,

I third the counseling thing. You don't know how this matter has affected you until you're looking at it with 20/20 hindsight.

Mal-licious

I think I will add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.

'Licious

Okay, I'm working on the 'sunny', but you're right: I ain't getting a postive feel on that at this point. I still got a couple days, though. It'd help to know what beach we're talking about. Hey, I'm half a continent away and working all weekend; my binoculars aren't that good...

And I'm not sure (how could I be?), but I think I just got a guy to smile at you in a genuine and meaningful way, in the courthouse. Hope you liked it and that it made you feel better today.

Yours Truly,

zoid

P.S.
By 'meaningful', I mean appreciative.

Firefly fans are the best. Thanks for your kind words and advice I really appreciate it. I'm graduating soon with a degree in psychology so I definitely know how important it is to take care of unresolved issues. If I was having any problems I would look into getting counseling for sure. It is really sound advice though for anyone going through tough times, it can't hurt to talk. Anyway thanks again for your support, it just goes to show like I said before Firefly fans are the best!

ZAD:

No prob, doc. "Physician, heal thyself."

As far as your original question, otherwise ignored due to the critical notice included in your first post:

I can't really say that entertainments of any kind help me through the tough times. Not that I can recall, at any rate.

They do help me enjoy the good times, and get through the blah times (like, when nothing much is changing, or is kinda stale, I guess); and they've helped me appreciate the things humans share, that we sometimes forget. We love, we laugh, we cry.

The things I find beautiful about life are sometimes captured by an author or director or painter, in a way that makes me feel as if that beauty was universal. That implies a common bond between us, while 'the World' sometimes makes us feel as though we are all alone, separated.

Art (whatever medium) can be life-affirming, by inspiring that feeling of universality; or it can be escapist, by setting our imaginations free from the mundane. But, I kinda balk at the urge to use it to escape from my troubles. I'm the type of person who can't just forget problems by distracting myself. "The tough times" would ruin my entertainment experience, by distracting me from enjoying it.

For the truly tough times, the problems I can't handle on my own, there's only one solution, and that's a matter of personal faith.

Hope this answer doesn't disappoint anyone too much. I've always felt Rock music was a form of primal scream therapy (like cussing a blue streak when you stub your toe or hit your thumb with a hammer). But, I loved Firefly from day one, just for what it was. I was awestruck at its completeness. (NB: By 'completeness', I'm not really sure what I mean; but it's like the story of the artist who -- bidden by the Chinese emperor to produce a masterpiece on the spot -- drew a single perfect circle, and was revered by the Emperor. 'Complete' like that, I think.)

Respectfully,

zoid

I have to say I am working on my second dvd set from things like also cleaning my house with it on in the background, but when my divorce was going thru, I was glad I had something to take me out of " reality " if just for 45 mins per show.

I hope things work out for the best, and in the end they usually do.

Every time I am depressed, or feeling heartbroken, I watch some Firefly. It helps, a least for a little while.
