Hello, my computer-savvy Browncoat friends. I realize this has little to do with Firefly, but I'm looking into buying an iPod and have a question. It says on the iPod website that I need a USB 2.0 port to hook it up to my computer. I have no idea what the differnce is between a USB 2.0 and a USB 1.1. I bought my computer in Semptember of 2002, and the USB ports on my computer have worked with every USB product I have (as far as I knew there was only one kind of USB port). So... can anyone tell me if an ipod will work with my computer? Thanks!

Assuming you have a PC that has USB 1.1 (which is most likely), if you plug your Hi-Speed USB 2.0 peripheral into the USB 1.1 system, your system will perform at the USB 1.1 speed. If you would like to use High-speed USB 2.0, you will need to update your PC either by adding in a PCI add-in card or purchasing a new MB with a discrete host controller that supports Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and installing Hi-Speed USB 2.0 drivers.

doctorpayne13:

It should. Part of the USB 2.0 spec is backward compatibility with USB 1.1 devices. However, it will transload data at a significantly reduced speed.

If worse comes to worst, you can always buy a PCI-bus USB 2.0 expansion card for your computer, in order to get 100% compatibility and throughput speeds with your iPod. Installation of the card will require cracking your case (or finding a local friend who's savvy enough to do it for you, if you can't). Cost of the card c. $20.

Unless of course, your computer is a Mac, in which case all bets are off. You'd need to find a Apple-certified shop and have them upgrade your machine. I'd get peeved if they quoted more than $60 for parts and labor, turnkey.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully,

zoid
