Actually I appreciate the nude journalism concept. American journalism dominates the world (along with the BBC, who have a fine tradition even if they turned corrupt in the '90s). Canadian journalism dominates pay per view.

Don't think Mal's a republican at all. Being an athiest (or at least an enemy of god ;-) Maybe in the old days, when the Repubs were 'the party of ideas' but not now that they are the party of dogmas. More a libertarian.

I could see zoe as an old school (edited) republican, solid hard hitting gal. Though I don't believe she'd think much of their attack on women's rights, she was in the infantry after all.

Kaylee always struck me as a Kansas progressive.

And until the state took his sister I'd have pegged the doc as a Republican too.

Wash definitely struck me as a Dem. Way too much sense of humor to be any of the republican's I know.

I think Inara, unless there's a space whore party, is probably a political agnostic. Just to sensual and present for politics.

And book, Either he's a sneaky CIA republican or a bleeding heart democrat. I mean look how he loves to keep bullets away from evil folk. The CIA bit just goes with my personal asessment of Books history.

And Zed, PB isn't a troll in the current common sense, but Ratboy seems to be naught more than name calling flamebait on this thread. Thoughtful republicans? I've met a few in the Club for Growth, but I've met way more who are moral totalitarians and simpletons to boot. Of course, same goes for the Dems...

They're off the agenda! Thank Christ (apologies for all the blaspheming) I was really worrying about us moving into a 'Big Brother State.'

I'm seriously considering the Liberal Democrats at the moment, but what worries me is that if a few people go over to the Liberal Democrats, then there's a chance the Conservaties might get in! *Shudders*

Anyhow, in relation to Firefly I think politics should stay out of it. Just seems to warp my views of characters a little, And like someone said above

Good = thoughtful rebulicans, thoughtful democrats

Bad = ignorant republics, ignorant democrats

Anyway, here is how I peg the Firefly crew:

Mal, Jayne
conservative - Know what is right

Inara, Wash
liberals - Everyone is free in the pursuit of happiness, in however they might find it

Book
Has a complete, structured belief system that states clearly what is right and what is wrong, but also has compassionate, forgiveness and love of friends that can modify those strong beliefs.

Kaylee
Doesn't think much about right and wrong, Wants to love everyone. But if someone is "bad" and needs to be removed from the 'Verse, then so be it. Like a spaceship engine, some parts might just be broken and can't be fixed.

Simon
Very intellectual, decides everything on a individual basis. Probably not good in a battle, but a good person to plan the battle.

Zoe
Thinks that everyone should be free to do their own thing and go their own way. But if that other person threatens her or her friends, she will cut their carotid artery.

Serenity the ship
This is an inanimate object so it does not have intentions in its actions. It has a design function of keeping the inhabitants safe and transporting them from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time. If it becomes damaged and threatens the lives of the crew members, it is not from any bad intent, it merely responds to internal or external conditions. It can be coerced to function in ways not designed by wiring changes and extreme piloting, like when it reversed direction and flew toward the Reaver ship instead of away as it was designed to do.

River
Somewhat like the ship. She has been modified with a certain intent by her designers. But different than the ship in that she is a human that can choose what path to take and how to change her destiny.

Reavers = Bad dudes, their morality is so unlike that of normal society that we will not try to understand, but just call it amorality.

This whole thread cracks me up. It reminds me of people tying up their self worth in their careers. Dude, I just work here.

As to America, I take no responsibility or credit for her past. I'm 30. I wasn't around when the Civil War occured. And though America had a bit to do with building the ISS, I'm sure my little self had no responsibilty or credit due for that either. I have only the power (limited thought it may be by the electoral college and the power of the politcal lobby) to try and change the future. Dude, I just live here.

As to the crews' political party... I think if you asked any of them what political party they belonged to they wouldn't give a rat's a**. They're traveling around on a spaceship trying to stay away from pretty much EVERYBODY. I don't get the impression that any of them like any sort of government.

I get the distinct impression that Malcolm Reynolds would dispatch any politician that had the bad judgement to set foot aboard Serenity, with the same alacrity he displayed with Dobson at the end of the pilot. Regardless the politician's partisan affiliation.

I often fantasize what might have happened, had the show stayed on the air. Perhaps some of our passengers would have left the ship. Inara certainly indicated as much. Then we'd have gotten new passengers, itinerant travelers who stick around for a show or two before reaching their destination and disembarking.

In such fantasies, I imagine a lawyer securing a berth for a trip to one of the Rim Worlds, where he plans on setting up a personal injury practice.

Alas, we'll never know. Not because the show got cancelled; but, because Mal would shove him out of the airlock as soon as they broke atmo. And none of the other crew would bat an eyelash, not even Book...

Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that currently Republicans are after a constitutional amendment to limit states rights and Democrats are trying to balance the budget?

I honestly think that the political distinctions have crumbled to the point that you can not place any faith in them.

Republicans are trying to lessen the rights of states; Republicans are trying to increase the rights of states. That in itself is enough to make classifying a person based on party sort of useless.

When the same group of people vote for Republicans in the senate, Democrats in the house, and an independent as governor it just gets hard to say which party someone is in.

In a poll four years ago 90% of Americans said they supported freedom of speech completely, 60% of those same Americans said they didn’t think certain people should be allowed to speak (at all.) They tended to base this on political party. That means that at least 50% of those polled both support and oppose free speech at the same time.

In America politics is fluid. When less than 25% of eligible voters vote for a person it is now a universal mandate.

The truth is it’s a headache.
