I think it can be said that the crew of Serenity can be viewed as pirates by some folk, so I don't imagine pirate movies in general have completely escaped the interest or attention of the Browncoat community.

Which is your favourite, and why?

Mine is Pirates of the Carribean, reason: Depp.
( Cutthroat Island close second, reason: Davis + Arnold's perfect musical score)

I have to say though, in that movie there was a great little thing where Jack (Depp) talks about what a ship is, short version: Freedom.

The same goes for Serenity.

Does anybody here remember seeing "Amazon Women On The Moon"? There's a great little segment in there about video pirates. The funniest thing I've seen in a pirate guise.

The FBI warning comes on, and the pirate captain says (sarcastically) "Oh...I'm so scared..."

I laughed until I fell, but then again, I was drunk. Seems to happen to me a lot.

i liked pirates of the carribean. the sequel will be interesting. not sure if i like the idea of another yet. the title has been changing a lot. the most recent news i heard from "dead man's chest" in reference to davy jone's locker. i agree. depp was fantastic in the first movie.

has anyone ever seen a pirate movie? low budget 80s parody/comedy. funny stuff!

the scene involving the guy lifting weights and hitting the keystone cop on the head is hilarious for no other reason than it is just plain silly.

if you like pirate movies, you should play the monkey island computer games. i thought they were so much fun! mostly low action, high comedy puzzle type games. they are so funny. i own them all and they were worth every penny!

I'm a big Pirate fan. *Holds up hand*

My favourite would be The Crimson Pirate with Burt Lancaster. It's a wonderful swashbuckler with the then acrobatic Burt Lancaster peforming many of his own twirls, flips, summersaults and stunts etc. Really a cracking yarn! Oh and even Christopher Lee makes an appearance. ....And may I say what a fathful nod Pirates of the Caribbean makes towards The Crimson Pirate. Y'know the scene where Will and captain Sparrow tip the boat over and walk into the sea and along the seabed to pass under the ships above... Well that's directly out of the Crimson Pirate.

Also Captain Blood with the great Errol Flynn is a great deal of fun. There's even the Scarlet Buccaneer with Robert Shaw He from Jaws which is pretty full of hi-jincks and sword play and has a slimline James Earl Jones laughing it up all the way through. Firefly and indeed even Star Wars has slight tilts towards the Pirate theme...

Lately though it's proved a tricky genre to pull off. Pirates of the Caribbean being a rare exception and success in the last twenty - thirty years. I've not seen Cutthroat Island.

Captain Blood is probably my favorite pirate movie, but I really like Pirates of the Caribbean as well. I am looking forward to the sequel.

Right there with you - The Sea Hawk is very similar - has that jaunty, "even death is fun!" Errol Flynn tone.

Honorable mention in the "Not Pirate Movies But They Take Place on a Boat in the Ocean at the Same Time" category:
1. Mutiny on the Bounty - all 3 versions, Brando's being my favorite
2. The Hornblower series - sometimes uneven, always fun.
3. Master and Commander - "eh" on the casting of the movie, but the books are seriously addictive - great reads.

Jumping on the Pirates of the Caribbean bandwagon here. I saw it the first time because Orlando Bloom was in it; I saw it the next seven times for Johnny Depp having more fun than anyone should be allowed to have doing their job.

It's been a while since I've seen Captain Blood, but I remember that I liked it.

Oh, and I also liked Muppet Treasure Island!

I just knew that nobody but me saw Cutthroat Island! It was a total bomb at the boxoffice because the title makes it sound like a kiddie movie, but it's too violent for them.
Frank Langella plays the bad guy, that alone should sell the flick!
The dvd is a pretty ordinary transfer, but the movie is fun, I promise you.
And if you like David Arnold's music in Independance Day or the recent Bond movies, you'll love his work here.

Silly fun and adventure, with the hero of the film being a woman, and the male lead is a sidekick!!

Uh-oh, Kierra Knightly, gotta go!

Love P.O.C., and Cutthroat Island. Both are great. But, there was a Tommy Lee Jones pirate movie a few years ago, called "Nate and Hayes" It is great! If you can find it, check it out. Also, "Yellowbeard," "Ice Pirates," and Polanski's "Pirates" were also all great fun.

A supreme nod to ole Errol, who was definately classic as a pirate, and a sideways trivia note.

The guy who choreographed his swordwork, is the same guy who did so for LoTR, just so ya know.

But I really do have to hand it to Pirates of the Carribean.

My fav scene and quote is odd (you'd have to know me and the wife to know how bloody true it is...)

It's that scene where she burns the rum, leaving him totally outraged, then chumps him with the 'signal' bonfire statement...

And then he sees the ship.

"There'll be no living with her after this..."

REGINAROADIE

I havn't seen many what you would consider pirate movies. But I actually like CUTTHROAT ISLAND better than PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN. I know CUTTHROAT ISLAND has this reputation of being one of the biggest bombs in film history and that it's a black spot on the resumes of everyone associated with it.

But I saw that movie when I was 10. I didn't know anything about the movie when I went to it at the Gravelbourg theatre (it was a movie theatre at one of the other towns near where I lived) and I loved every minute of it. It's one of those movies that you see as a kid and you fall in love with the medium. You see Geena David pull back the canvas off a cannon, say to the villain "Bad Dawg" and then blow him away, there's no turning back. You wanna make movies. And my enthusiasm for it is still unabated. I rented it a few years later to see if had aged terribly, but it still gave me that sense of awe and excitement. To me, the David Arnold score is the icing on the cake.

So while PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN might have Depp, millions of dollars and worldwide acclaim, CUTTHROAT ISLAND will still have a place in my heart.
