America loves a winner!

Didn't they announce that the show was to be cancelled right before or during season 5 ? Makes me wonder where the story would have gone had they not had to wrap things up so abruptly.

Shouldn't this be posted on the Angelus Arcanum forum ? Just sayin'.

And yes, season 5 was great. LOVED Illyria! Yum.

i also enjoyed season 5. some people i have read did not like the whole taking over wolfram and hart thing, but i thought it was pretty cool. i more enjoyed the dynamic between wes and illyria. so much tension and really was pretty well done, in my opinion. the finale stands as probably my favorite episode in that season. it was incredible to watch.

Actually I put it in the Angelus Arcanum folder but it showed up in the General Discussion. Go figure.

I loved "Your Welcome" when Cordy came back and the big Wolf Ram and Hart Halloween Party with Gunn peeing everywhere. Too funny!

Apparently not very much was changed at all after the cancellation. Illyria demonstrates this quite well - why introduce a new character for only the few remaining episodes? Because Joss had always intended to do that and carried on regardless.

After the trainwreck of S4, S5 was a huge recovery. Not quite as coherent as previous years for my tastes though. I'd rank them:

S1
S2
S3
S5
S4

S5 loses points for the writers forcing Spike to say 'bugaboo' over and over.

I also liked season 5, although it's still my second favorite after season 2. My favorite ep was "Damage", which was a great episode all the way through, but ended with that incredible scene in Spike's hospital room where Angel and Spike discuss the nature of evil and their respective takes on it:

Spike: I didn't even think about the victims.

Angel: For me it was all about the victims...the destrucion of a human being...I would have considered Dana (the psychotic slayer) a masterpiece.

Spike: Well, she's one of us now. A monster.

Angel: She's an innocent victim.

Spike: So were we, once upon a time.

Angel: (quietly) Once upon a time.

There was more to it than that, but I can't remember all of it off the top of my head. But that's my single favorite scene from all five years of the show.

...except that Illyria had already been introduced before the WB told Joss that the show was cancelled. Illyria was introduced in episode 15 and Joss didn't find out about the cancellation until sometime during or after the filming of episode 18. ME only had four episodes left to film when they found out about the cancellation. That's why not much changed at the end. They didn't have enough notice to start a series ending arc.

It was publicly announced Angel was cancelled the day before Smile Time aired, I think the 14th April

That may be completely true, but it has nothing to do with when the episodes were FILMED, which was several weeks in advance of when they aired on tv.

That really was a brilliant scene. Spike and Angel were victims too.

I loved it too, have you listened to the commentaries?
I loved Joss' comment about finally finding the right ingénue for Angel...
after 4 years of putting Angel with one little blonde after another
(plus having three little blonde in S5, with Eve Harmony & Nina all arriving on the scene)
FINALLY Joss find the perfect one: Spike!

I would rate Ats:
S5
S2
S3
S1
S4

From what little I've heard, no, he had no idea that they would be cancelled right up until he got the word. After the near-cancellation the prior year, Joss had done everything the network had wanted him to do and the show's ratings had increased significantly. Right up until the cancellation notice, (again, from what little I've heard) ME was expecting to come back for a sixth season. Joss had already planned the whole Illyria/Fred/Wes story arc to play out over another season.
Obviously, the one change he did make at the end was killing off Wesley. If the show had continued, Wes would have still been around (per another thread that I can't remember the title of right now).

I'm not as big a fan of S5 as much as others but I'm enjoying it more watching it on DVD. I'm one of those people who wasn't crazy about the takeover of W&H.

I thought S4 was developed interestingly until the train went off the track and did indeed become a full-fledged train-wreck.

I'd rank 'em:

2 Just my opinion, but I think 2 is quintessential ANGEL
1
3
4
5

I can see how someday I might switch 4 and 5 or even 3,4,and 5.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think Joss would have made any changes if he knew there getting cancelled much earlier. I think he'd stick to his guns.

No, you're right about that. When the cancellation was announced, Joss said that they would still go ahead with the final four episodes that they hadn't filmed yet ALMOST as they had originally planned. The only thing they did that was a big change (as far as I know) was killing Wes. That definitely would not have happened if the show had been renewed for another season.
