After the near-cancellation the prior year, Joss had done everything the network had wanted him to do and the show's ratings had increased significantly. Right up until the cancellation notice, (again, from what little I've heard) ME was expecting to come back for a sixth season. Joss had already planned the whole Illyria/Fred/Wes story arc to play out over another season.
