I think the trailer did an awsome job of introducing to the rest of the world the two main characters of the show, Serenity and Mal. I'll wait for charater development in the movie.

What's wrong with that? What would be the reason for leaving out JW's credentials?

I agree Captaincdc, I see nothing wrong with the trailer saying "from the creator of Buffy and Angel". In fact I think it will draw many more people(Buffy and Angel fans) to the theatres come septemeber.

I've been closely examining the trailer, and I have some answers.

1. On board what? Doesn't really show it's Serenity.

2. Reavers.

3. Dunno.

4. Mal.

Yer welcome.

I too am WOW! I too watched it over and over again. I love the "Millions of Fans Worldwide" and the repeat line of Wash's defining what "interesting" means!

I think people who do not know the show will find it interesting but it has a lot of, let's make no mistake......we know our fan base.

I think the line at the end "You can't stop the signal" might be the fact that Fox cancelled it but now Universal has made a movie out of it. You know, we still get to see our show. Fox did not stop the signal!!!!

Just a thought.

The trailer was awesome but 2 things worry me:

1) Was it just part of the trailer music, or did Universal force Joss to put sound in space?

2) Jayne talks differently (or at least the lines we heard from him in the trailer sounded different). He seems to have less of an accent and seems to speak like a more intellectual person. I hope it was just because the lines were taken out of context.

Other than that, the changese look awesome! Love the River fight scene. *snicker* Is the main bad guy (black dude that has no problem killing children) Jubal Early? And if so, is the same actor as from the TV series? He was speaking with a different accent as well. The special effects looked great. And I like the addition of weapons to Serenity. What can I say? I like destruction...hee hee

So can't wait for September!

Dinosaurs!!! I saw plastic dinosaurs.

Also, somebody thought Serenity fired missiles. When I looked frame-by-frame it just looks like they went for a hard burn. The next clip even shows the engines continuing to glow.

After I watched the trailer, it was like the years fell away and I was back at a time when my oldest son and I would set aside an hour Friday evening to watch the most special show on television. And then talk about it afterward... and wonder what next week's episode would reveal. Until I saw the trailer, I could remember what a special, fragile time that was. But I couldn't feel it any more.

After watching the trailer, I felt it again. For the first time since the cancellation.

It is so rare to get to experience special moments like when Firefly was on the air. Rarer still to find them a second time after they've been lost. September is so going to rock...

That was my thought. It may well refer to something in the movie, but in the trailer it's more of a nod to the fans for keeping the signal alive.

I think the trailer is exciting and it's probably a good way to promote the movie; it does fit the Hollywood standards. Now, I have two questions. Are they still using the silence in space idea, and will the overall flavor of the series still be there?

I do have solid faith that the answer to the second question is a yes. Afterall, none of the Fox trailers represented the series very well. My theory is that Joss probably would never put this movie together without making it as true to his original vision as a movie could hold.

Checking out the trailer frame-by-frame was more encouraging for me. Though I still can't find Book, it was nice to see that there is obvious attention to detail in the shots. It's enlightening to see Mal close a fan to get a better look at River kicking some butt. Also, Reavers, I would never have guessed they could look that ugly, and finding a second very brief Reaver shot put me in a cold dark place. I am so happy and relieved to see the floral paintings in the mess hall are still there, cause, if they weren't, the world would have to endure another one of my nitpicky temper-tantrums.

Hmm, after those posts proclaiming Joss as a god I'm afraid I might be burned at the stake as a heretic, but...

First of all, the trailer is very well done. I'm not denying that.
But if I saw that without knowing Firefly...I'd probably say, "oh, another movie I can't wait to NOT see."
However, I'm a somewhat unlikely Firefly fan to begin with - I had to be dragged in originally - so maybe that's not a problem.

Here's my problem though: it's so BIG. The plot, I mean. It seems so epic. One of the things I like so much about Firefly is that it's NOT the fate of the universe that's threatened. It's just them, plus the people they encounter directly. We definitely see a strong undercurrent of the power-centres in the universe (Alliance, mainly), but these powers affect them far more than they affect the powers. It's real, and it's personal - allowing for things like the funny exchanges between characters, marital spats, ongoing tensions, running jokes... I guess I'm just worried that everything I like best about the show will be lost when it's blown up into a movie. The trailer shows armadas of ships and what looked like destroyed cities - this makes me very worried.

And besides, if my expectations are low, I'll like the BDM even better, right?

And of course this didn't stop me from watching the trailer three or four times at 4:04 in the afternoon...

The trailer was so friggin' awesome! It was so worth the near three hours it took to load! (I had to load it twice because my internet crashed in the middle of loading the first time. stupid dial-up modem) I love every second of the trailer.River was so very cool. I have the same questions as the other browncoats, though. Where is Book? "6 rebels?" "You can't stop the signal?" The last one is the one that baffles me the most. I've read everyone's theories on what it means, and the only one that makes a minute amount of sense to me is that it has more to do with the actual plot. It doesn't really make sense in the context of the trailer.
Guess i have to wait 'till september to find out.

let me add to this some own thoughts.

1. maybe confused by the scene of the chasing ship firing a missile and serenity dodging?

3. looking close it's not easy to tell if she REALLY kicks him or just kicks close to his face to demonstrate something. problem is that in a movie she would ALWAYS only kick close to it.

Anyways,I'm gonna go into Fangurl mode right now so please excuse me....ILOVEITILOVEITILOVEITILOVEITILOVEIT! I cannot wait for the movie!!! 5 months is gonna feel like 5 years to me. Everyone in the movie looks so different! River kicking some ass, that was great!!! I love that!! The whole trailer looks dark and cleaner with some very beautiful color. I like it. And the trailer doesn't seem so spolierish. If you firgured out a whole movie just by watching its trailer then its a spolierish trailer.Thats what I think but this one...no way.
I'm gonna be first in line to buy tickets to see this movie and I won't stop there. I'll see it again and again. Its gonna be a great movie. I can't wait!! I'mm like high on sheer giddy-ness. Too much happiness going straight to brain.

I'm gonna go watch the trailer again! *runs off to watch the trailer again and again and again...*

my thought, but i dont think it is coincidence, that it has more than one meaning. one inside the movie (speculation) and one saying "joss got his baby out to the world just as he promised he would".

hm, thinking about the scene above. maybe she and other "alliance projects" are kind of sleepers and the signal will make them do weird things.. like kicking their brothers *g*.. but in that case they wouldnt need someone tracking river to bring her in *confused*. well, we wont know until the movie is out.

Man. I'm still giddy with excitement and it's been more than 10 hours since my first viewing (of course, I've watched it a number of times since then ).

I spent most of the afternoon surfing around the web to see what the general reaction was and I was pleasantly surprised at how many browncoats there are out there. Slashdot and MetaFilter both had pretty decent sized threads where fans of the show pretty effectively countered some of the criticisms raised by those who had never watched an episode. Hopefully we can get a bunch of people watching the DVDs to figure out just what the heck Serenity is all about!

Well, actually 6 rebels is quite correct, since from what I understood the movie starts from the start again and then it would be 6 "rebels" and 3 passengers (River, Simon and Book... if Book is in the movie at all?)

And I know I will be burnt at the stake for saying it, but I am not sure what to make of the trailer.
The "Wowzer-Feeling" I had when I watched Firefly for the first time was not there actually.

Seems like more space, less western influence.
Most of the music in the trailer was...uhm..."interesting".
Book missing (imo one of the most interesting chars in Firefly)
Sound in Space (although it might be the cuts in the trailer that make it look that way)

Don't get me wrong, still will go and watch it on the opening weekend, but I feel I can live through to the opening date easier now after seeing the trailer. Not holding my breath as much anymore.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, Gavida. Been beating this notion around over on the Serenity board. There's someone there who claims to be with the production who says, don't worry. Says that the over the top action and fast-paced cuts and music dubs are all promotional addons. That eases the mind a bit, but they also keep reiterating that the tone is different because its a movie (?).

Anyway, I actually liked the trailer a lot, but mostly because its our crew in action. How could I not love it. But if I stand back a few paces, this is exactly the kind of trailer I'd ignore in a theater if I wasn't already a fan.

Ohmigod - I was so busy thinking, "Where's Book?" that I hardly noticed the lack of Kaylee.

I think there's plenty for existing Firefly fans to look forward too (although am slightly concerned that Simon seems to be dressed like a Gestapo reject in half the photos I've seen), but is the trailer likely to bring in any new fans?

Morning after thoughts...

1) I agree with those who have expressed doubts over the various captions. I would've preferred to see the trailer go out without an explicit link to BtVS etc. I doubt that its inclusion will sell many more tickets, and it might even turn some away. The number of Buffy fans who haven't already heard of Firefly/Serenity must surely be outweighed many times over by the people who a) don't know of Buffy at all, or b) see Buffy as "just a teen show", and may therefore dismiss Serenity on the same basis. Also, quoting the adulation of websites - without any print media at all - always makes me sceptical... anyone can write anything on a website. And it's not as if respected film magazines haven't commented on Serenity - take _Empire_ in the UK, for example.

2) Curiously, I find myself a little less enthused about the film after this trailer than I was before. As some have said, too much action, not enough dialogue and character. But... have faith in Joss. And bewail the low attention span of the mainstream audience that necessitates such trailers...

3) I love the fact that the River-fu looks like a dance recital gone deadly. Seems very in keeping with the character. Plus, we'll finally be able to use "balletic" to talk about the fight scenes and mean it literally.

4) No lines for Inara. Boo! But that exasperated glance she gives Mal near the end (after "It usually is.") is our Ambassador, all right

5) "You can't stop the signal" seems to accord pretty well with some of the speculation here over River's 'programming'. My guess is that some sort of trigger has been hypnotised/built in to her brain... or that she *is* the signal, and can rouse all her fellow scary kids. Against the Alliance? As somebody said above, seems a shame to put the crew of Serenity so centre-stage in the fate of the universe when that was never what the TV show was about - but then, it isn't the TV show. Still, one day I'd love to know how Joss would've developed these plotlines (if he would have developed them) given the time and space of TV format...

6) Just downloaded it so I can watch frame-by-frame. Growing on me.

Despite all the (not wholly unjustified) railing against Fox, there were problems with the series as a marketable product. It was just too many things. How does one market a sci-fi/ western/ drama/ romance/ action/ caper/ horror/ family/ existentialist/ post-war/ comedy /character study with sprinkles of Chinese dialog? Those of us who saw it know that it was a masterful blend of these things, but an awful lot of folks will either find something in that list that's a big turn-off or just think it must be a mess.

Universal is apparently aiming the trailer at what they think the biggest potential market is: action/sci-fi. Joss'll just have to sneak the rest into the actual movie.

Quote:

it's so BIG.

I get that concern - even share it somwhat - but here's the thing: the big was always there. Both River and the Reavers were always big things, they just weren't generally dealt with in big ways on TV. It's pretty hard to imagine any way either situation could come to a head that wasn't big.

I'll just put my faith in Joss that "big" won't preclude "real, and ... personal"

Some other notes:
Since no one else seems to be mentioning it: Book *is* in the trailer. There's a quick clip that looks like it's set planetside in a tent with Kaylee holding a child in the foreground, Mal at a table mid-ground and Book standing behind the table.(edit) or rather I just remembered seeing it there. Apparently I just saw that photo in the official site's gallery and mentally inserted it into the trailer. Sorry.(/edit)

My only critisism: I can already tell I'm going to miss David Boyd's Cinematography. His work on the show was soooo damned beautiful. Ah well, maybe they can get him back for the SECOND MOVIE.

This was the thought that struck me as I read it, but knowing Joss it is more likely a double entendre, referring to something in the BDM as well as the fact that Fox cancelling the show did not kill it off.

Does anybody have the trailer saved on their computer that they could possibly upload for me to watch here on this computer? It won't work for me on the website and i really want to show a friend!

To those of you who object to the mention of BTVS in the fear that would put people off, how about this:

"From the creative genius behind Alien: Resurrection...."

Help...am making screencaps, already up to 27 and only just reached the "From the mind of Joss Whedon" bit!

GRRARRG

I think that if I wasn't familiar with the show, that this would seem at least as interesting as any other sci-fi movie. We get a glimpse of the plot - rebels running from a government that's willing to murder children to reclaim this girl. Seems to be some humor thrown in. From a mass-marketing standpoint, I don't see how they could have made the trailer better.

Other than through more praise and testimony from trustworthy sources, I don't think they're going to be able to pre-sell this movie to people that aren't into sci-fi. That's the most obvious genre, and that's how they've steered the trailer. As has been said before, if they tried to throw in the other aspects of it, people wouldn't buy into it, just like they didn't with the series.

Only thing that's going to get non-sci-fi fans in there is word-of-mouth. We need to kidnap Roger Ebert and force-feed him the DVDs.

At this point, I'd be happy with him just seeing the movie. For one thing, those are the numbers that will determine whether our vers will continue or not. For another thing, if he sees the movie he will hopefully be motivated to see the series.

By the way, if he's a trustworthy friend, then there wouldn't be a need for him to shill out anything, would there? Otherwise, he could look into the public library.

I mock you with my monkey pants.

SAINT JAYNE

That is too cool for words! So allow me to add my thoughts in mime...

I see a lot of anxious people, but personally I am very relieved to see the trailer as it is. I get a good vibe off the writing and the acting (what little we see). True, the filming style is different (and it was that which drew me to Firefly at first). True, the story seems epic. I'm not going to worry about what might be missing because of a 2 minute trailer, though.

I suppose one thing that me mind keeps conjuring is...

Select to view spoiler:

how much the trailer could be seen to parallel bits of the original series.

I hosted a mirror of the trailer (higher quality) on WhoIsRiver.com - it got 129gb worth of downloads in the first hour.

Im thinking maybe this was like a flashback to how he got River out of the academy...seeing as in her dream in The Train Job, we see her on a similar looking chair. Maybe he was...undercover alliance-ing?
