Well, I think. A friend and myself started clapping afterwards, and about 10-20 people joined in. There was definitely some murmur around before and after the trailer. Very positive. And our BDH's looked very nice on the big screen, I might add.

Definitely happy I got to see it, but I'm surprised that's it's not everywhere. I feel bad for you guys...

I mean, I liked hitchhiker's, but I would definitely go again just to see the trailer on the big screen...

y'all may have already read about this in one of the other threads but, apparently there are two different disto copies of Hitchhiker. One version has the trailer attached and one does not. Call the theater you plan to to see H in and they should be able to tell you which version.

There is a spin-off benefit to this: They'll know there is "buzz" for Serenity.

I wonder how much Hitchhiker's box office has been improved by the Browncoats...?

I think quite a bit. I don't really have any interest in Hitchhickers but am seriously entertaining the notion of seeing it just for our Serenity trailer.

I saw HHG today in Los Angeles. Sadly, no Serenity trailer here either. I asked the manager to check the trailer listing before buying a tix but his computer was down. I figured, what the heck, I was planning on seeing the movie anyway. Guess I'll have to be satisfied watching the trailer on my computer for now.

Had a date with my dad to see HHGG today. OMG it was so amazing!!!!! A lot of the movie was similar to the book, and a lot of it was new. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but there were some little jokes that only people who have read the book or seen the BBC mini series would get. Let's just say that Dad and I had tears in our eyes at some points (not all from laughter, too). Visually stunning! Make sure to keep an eye out for the original Marvin, Simon Jones, and Douglas Adams' nose.

Just saw it here in the Atl area. It did have the trailer and I really liked the movie. No one clapped after Star Wars, I was the only one that clapped for the trailer. There were 20ish people in the theater.

I work at a movie theater (which shall remain nameless). But the basic deal is that there's a numbered list of ten or so possible trailers that are sent out for each movie to be put on in addition to the attached trailer. Usually some of these trailers come "in the can" with the feature they're to be shown with. Theaters are supposed to attach 5 trailers or so from the list with top priority given to the lower numbered trailers (i.e. the first trailer listed is most likely to be put on the movie). The trailer lists vary from region to region and probably company to company, but in my region in Atlanta, Serenity was #7 on the list, so... It's not a definite thing. So, you might want to check before you go see Hitchhiker for a 4th or 5th time.

A mess is what it was, it was as if Douglas Adams wrote the first half of a movie which execs didn't like so got someone else to write a new first half, however instead of finishing either version they just stuck them both together. The old jokes have lost their punchlines, the new jokes are not funny and make little sense, the guide's in it for all of 5 minutes and serves purely as exposition, there's no ending, the love story is pointless, there are two sets of bad guys who don't do anything, that bloody song and dance at the start...

Okay, that's probably being too harsh, the acting is pretty good and some of the jokes are funny but it's a mess of a film based on a brilliant book that no-one seems to understand, least of all the director. I implore you not to see it, buy the book, buy the tapes, if you're really desperate buy the tv show but don't give them money for something that deserved to be a lot better.

Nope. I just saw it here in Maryland (Muvico at Arundel Mills). No screening here. But the Serenity trailer was attached! Yes!!! And there was even somebody sitting next to me that knew about Firefly. Nobody clapped (that's just so not done here in MD).

But people gasped and seemed to like the trailer.

The theater chose not to show the Star Wars trailer though. I wonder why? I sort of wanted to see it to see how the movie might turn out. Cuz regardless of how little I like AotC, I'm still going to see Revenge of the Sith (or whatever the R stands for).

Hitchhikers was entertaining. I've never read the books or seen the BBC series. I went specifically cuz my dad was interested in the movie and in case Serenity's trailer was attached.

So happy that my theater chose to show it!!!!

I've seen Hitchhiker's Guide three times in the last 18 hours or so. Each time no trailer. After the third time, I found the manager and asked him when the Serenity trailer was going to show. He got on his two-way radio and called upstairs. The guy upstairs said he'd get back to him so I stood there and talked about Serenity and Firefly with the manager. Showed him my shiny shirt with Firefly on the front and the ad I wrote for the DVDs and the BDM on the back. The guy upstairs called back and said it was playing in the large auditorium, not the one where I'd just seen HHG for the third time. The very nice manager said we could go in and watch it.

So I sat through Dark Water, watched Zathura again, watched part of the Star Wars trailer( which I'd not seen in three visits to three theaters), and then the Serenity trailer came on. It looks fabulous on the big screen! I've seen it on the computer multiple times, but this makes it real for me. The movie is actually going to happen! So I left with my heart full of joy, thanked the manager for making my day, and am thinking about seeing it again with my other son and his girlfriend.

Oh, how was the movie? It's like Firefly...it just gets better and better. I caught things the second time I'd missed the first, and the third time I saw things or got things I hadn't before. The best part about the third showing was that the theater was pretty packed, so I got audience reaction which had been missing during the sparsely attended midnight showing last night and the even more sparsely attended 11:55 showing this morning. People laughed in all the right places, the two teenage boys sitting next to us reacted well, and even little kids quieted down and watched. As we were leaving the theater, a guy walking behind us was on the phone talking excitedly to his mom about the movie. So go see HHG for the Serenity trailer and stay to enjoy it for itself.

Yeah, I was a little miffed that the trailer for SERENITY wasn't attached to the film, but the movie itself was so worth it. The parts on Earth kinda lacked a bit, and I'm sure because of the familiarity with the source novels it might not've seemed fresh at first.

But I chuckled at the sighing doors, I laughed at the sublime Alan Rickman as Marvin, and with the bit with the whale, I was laughing so hard that tears were coming down my face. I hadn't laughed that hard since god knows when. I'm trying to find the thoughts of the whale online so that I can memorize them.

So all in all, a good movie that lives up to Doug Adams legacy and a good way to kick off the 2005 summer series.

I saw Hitchiker's Guide today, too (And for the record, I liked it -- including the broadway show tune at the beginning.) and unfortunately didn't see a Serenity trailer. I got Ep III, Dark Water, Herbie, maybe a few others I don't remember.
It looks like the new Star Wars will be closer to being a good film than Eps I and II were, but that's not saying much. Anyway, that's my story.

Ok, Saw trailers for Zathura, Chicken Little, Shark Boy & Lava Girl, and Herbie. It was a Gorram "Disneyfest" perhaps the fault of going to a smalltown theater & being at a 7:00 showing.

I have never picked up Hitchiker. I probably never will. However I do plan on getting the tapes to listen to. Sorry, not a big reader.

I enjoyed the movie, I might have enjoyed it more had I not been there with a DIE-HARD Hitchiker Fan Who kept commenting on all the "stuff" that was different or missing. For what I saw I enjoyed it. Not a likely favorite, Might buy the DVD, I'm sure the special features will be entertaining and such. But it wa a great movie & I had fun. I loved Marvin & Trish. & the sofas.

I am so with you on this! I loved the radio show and was so disappointed with the movie and to make matters worse, no Serenity trailer. What a waste of $10.

I got the same previews reported by most other people, and I live in the Chicago area. I'm guessing that it has absolutly nothing whatsoever to do with geography, but rather the theater chain.

At the AMC where I saw hitchhikers tonight, I got Chicken Little, Zathura, and Herbie, which was advertised as "Herbie-er" than all previous Herbie interpretations.

Can anyone verify that this is what they got at AMC theaters? Did anyone see the Serenity promo at an AMC?

To the people who DID see the Serenity teaser, what theater chain were you at?

didn't rate the film much - a bit of a nostalgia trip as i grew up on the books, radio and tv series - did like the nods to the heritage - but felt like it didn't really flow like a film - felt like a 'best of'
the only bit i found really humorous was the 'prisoner release form' scene - don't know about the US but bureacracy in the UK is almost as bad as that!!!

Going to see it today, but it seems to have gotten mixed reviews. I'm a little worried, because I am a fan of the books, (I read them all in a row and loved them all), but we'll see. As for the Serenity trailer, I would love to see it on the big screen, but I am satisfied having seen it at all. I'm really more interested in other people seeing the trailer and getting excited for the movie that aren't already fans. So I hope the trailer IS playing...It's rainy and yucky here today, so maybe it'll drive more people to the theater.

Nah, HHGTTG sucked...I mean, there were almost no redeeming qualities. The funny parts were the lines taken right from the book (you could tell who hadn't read it during these parts - they were the ones laughing). There were a few things not in the book that may evoke a smile, or a slight chuckle, but no one in the theater really laughed at any of them. And about half-way through the film, they stray way off the plot, so that Arthur can be a hero. And, there's a whole completely fabricated love-story between Trillian and Arthur. Wtf was that?

I'm not even sure the writters actually *read* the book, in its entirety. As evidence of this, they mention the Restaruant at the End of the Universe near the close of the flick, and head there; then Marvin comments it's at the "other end of the Universe," so they turn around and head the other direction - implying that the restaurant is located at the edge, not the end.

Nah, it was a really lame flick. I don't recommend it - and no dice on the trailer in the Baltimore area, btw.

Can anyone verify that this is what they got at AMC theaters? Did anyone see the Serenity promo at an AMC?

To the people who DID see the Serenity teaser, what theater chain were you at?

You bring up a good point and I'd love to know the answer as well. I'm in LA and saw HHG at an AMC theater yesterday. *No* Serenity trailer :( We had Herbie, Zathura, SW, Chicken Little, Kicking & Screaming and Batman Begins.

I'm going to see HHG again tomorrow with a friend at a different theater chain. I'm *really* hoping the trailer's attached this time. It'd make seeing HHG twice worth it (and I'm a fan of the book).

And Zathura! That was one of the not-at-all-memorable trailers I saw (funnily, I was thinking that this looks like that lame 'Jumanji' and sure enough it is made by the same people...shudder).

Just saw HHGTTG - called the theaters about 20 miles from my place, they said they were NOT showing the Serenity trailer, so I went to my local theater. Saw previews for Chicken Little, Dark Water, and Herbie, but no Serenity. And I guess I'm not enough of a Douglas Adams purist, 'cause I liked the film. A bit uneven, the storyline didn't flow, but there were a few laugh-out-loud moments and more than a few giggles.

SHINEY

They had both the Star Wars AND Serenity trailers attached to the HHGTG movie at my local theatre. I was really stoked and embarassed Aronacus by clapping after both trailers. I read the book, and went into the movie knowing that the creators hadn't stuck to the book. So I took it for what it was meant to be, an entertaining movie that was loosely based on a book by Douglas Adams. I always hate the naysayers and their comments, if they want accuracy then we have the books, and chickies, the movie will only make people buy the books. And in a way thats good right ?

Judging by the reaction of the movie crowd, not anyone knew what the heck Serenity was except a kindly older gent that I had a nice conversation with before the movie. Aronacus said people shouldn't clap after trailers but hooey! I did it anyways!

Monroe, LA -- no Serenity trailer.

I got there and the trailers were rolling, and when there was no Serenity trailer, so I feared I'd missed it. But I asked a woman who was there before me and she said there was no trailer for a movie called Serenity.

Hitchikers Guide was fun...I enjoyed it a great deal and laughed a lot, but I didn't know exactly what to expect.The president of the galaxy was really funny, though.
Alan Rickman rules.

It was definitely worth the trip for a few reasons, though.
My sis likes Firefly, and she was A LOT more anxious about the trailer than I was. Funny, 'cause she says I'm obsessed. Hee.
Also: matinee is $2.00. There are a few advantages to being in the middle of nowhere.
Best for last: I was waiting for the bus and my sis and I were talking about the HHG (sis LOVED it, btw) and this guy waiting started this great sci fi conversation. I mentioned how disapointed I was about Serenity, and he was all like, "Yeah, I heard about that Joss Whedon movie. They never even gave the show a chance." We went on to discuss more Firefly until the bus came.

Browncoats are truly the nicest people.

I wanted to see the trailer on the big screen first, but now I go to watch it.

Ok,
I'm in Charlotte, NC and went up to Cncord Mills which is an AMC theatre. No Serenity trailer. Nothing even as mildly entertaining as SWIII or Batman Begins, or even Dark Water. which is surprising, 'cause there was like 10 bloody previews. 6-7 of them seemed to be aimed at the 8-10 year old crowd. Chicken little, herbie, jumanji in space AKA zarutha(sp?) Kicking and Screaming, Sharkboy and lava girl, and many other Craptastic trailers. Ummm...since when is The Guide a preteen movie?
As to a review of The Guide: I was disappointed. But that could have been spillover disappointment from no Serenity trailer. I loved the book, and some of the added stuff was funny, I enjoyed the dolphin song, and even got a bit choked up at the Point Of View Gun, But I agree with other reviews that say the direction seemed to change about 1/2 way through, and at the end it felt like it was cut short. I'd say wait til it hits those second run theatres if you have those in your area. Unless you're sure the Serenity trailer is showing with it, then the excitment over the trailer on the big screen may improve your enjoyment of the Guide. *shrugs*

Unfortunately no Serenity trailer here in St. Louis either. From working at the local theatre company for too many years and quite a few at AMC as well, most often the companies tell the theatres to put on trailers according to their demographics. Although I was going to see Hitchhiker's Guide eventually, seeing that trailer would have made my night especially since I went to the giant IMAX size screen specifically to see the trailer. Grr Arrgh. I guess I'll have to call the main office to lodge a complaint. I'm just hoping that alot of these theatres will put the "Serenity" trailer at the front of Star Wars to lure them into the next great sci-fi phenomenon. I can only hope

Who's flying this thing....Oh right, that would be me.

Just saw it, and I have to say I enjoyed it - I read the book a few times when I was younger, heard the radio show and saw the TV series, but was never a huge fan, so perhaps some of the changes didn't bother me (that said, its worth pointing out that Adams changed the story almost every time and as I understand it, the majority of the new elements in the film - including the love story - were his).

The cast was pretty good - though I wasn't sure about Mos Def as Ford, although he grew into it. Freeman was pretty darn good as Arthur and Sam Rockwell worked well as Zaphod, but the undeniable star was Rickman as Marvin - Zooey Deschanel (what's with all these young actresses with the husky voices? - not that I'm complaining) did well with an underwritten part.

The Slartibartfast sequence was strangely moving as well. I'll warn you now, its not wall to wall laughs, but I spent most of the movie with a smile on my face.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for pointing this out. People don't seem to realize that Adams did actually write most of the script--as I understand it he'd been working on it for quite a while before his death. Yes, it was likely revised--but to the best of my understanding the person who revised it was someone who had been working with Adams on the script before he died. So all you people who keep refering to 'the creators' in such snotty tones, you're talking about Adams--whether you like it or not.

Of course this says nothing to how much you enjoyed the film, and obviously even with Adams writing it the movie didn't work for everyone. So I'll give my opinion on how it worked. First, I'll agree with anyone who thinks it had pacing problems. This was always my biggest problem with the books, and it seems to have translated straight across to the movie. You'll either get over it/not notice it, or it'll drive you crazy. Second the humor is bizarre--much of it straight out of the book. If you don't like off the wall humor, you're probably not going to get something like the opening with Dolphins singing about fish. For me, none of the jokes fell flat, but there were places where I was the only one laughing--which leads me to believe that at least some of the jokes may require knowledge of the books, or at the very least a flipped up sense of humor--which I possess in spades.

My last thought deals with the over all theme. It's here that I think the film does best. Yes Arthur's love interest, who in the books isn't intruduced until later, has been cut out. In her place the writers have picked Trillian, who in the books is with Zaphoid throughout. This streamlines plot elements that would have been impossible to fit in otherwise. It also allows for nice growth on Arthur's part. Contrary to what someone else said, I don't think he ever becomes a traditional hero. He's just a guy who crazy stuff happens too, and even getting towards the end he's still afraid to take chances. What I love about the film, which is also what I loved about the books, is how it makes you think about the insane coincidences that run our lives without us even realizing it most of the time.

As you can probably tell, I loved the movie.
