Just saw Hitchikers Guide. . .

I must have been lucky because most of the theatre I was in this morning was laughing right along at all the right parts. And big surprises and grins seeing the original Marvin in line at the Vogon office as well as the original Arthur Dent as the face/greeting thing at Magrathea! :D

And then there was that last glimpse of the movie as the HoG engaged the IID. Very touching.

I went to a 10.50am showing of HHG in the West End - the stupid cinema hadn't even opened at 10.50! Either there were no trailers at all, or they'd started running whilst the angry hoardes (OK, couple of dozen people) waited for the damned doors to open. Either way, no "Serenity" for me.

I quite enjoyed the film although was surprised by the end - I watched the TV series last week and hadn't appreciated that it actually covered the first two novels so I was like "Oh, is that it?". When I got home I read the first two books (they're so short!) and feel less disatisfied with the movie's ending than I did at the time.

Loved all the references to the original too.

The thing I didn't like was how they recreated Earth exactly - I kind of assumed that Earth Mark 2 would have to evolve again, but no - it was as if nothing had happened. I know that makes it look as if Arthur has made the decision to move on with his life but surely one of the points of the novels is that he doesn't have a choice - everything's outside his control and he's effectively alone in the universe.

Glad I didn't have to suffer the emotional torment of Marvin's death though - was disturbing enough seeing him with that big hole in the back of his head!

Well, what about the fact that the movie made *no sense*? I mean, the whole point of the first was that Earth was destroyed, and Arthur, being the last person to come in contact with the planet, therefore would have somewhere in his subconciounce the Ultimate Question. But in this,

...there was no need for Arthur. I mean, this film was just so...wacky. The book, while outlandish, was cogent. Did no one else get that?

Yeah, as soon as those dolphins started singing in the beginning, I was like, "Oh God, this is gonna suck..."

It's a bit late, but here's a trailer spotting report from Appleton, Wisconsin, USA, Earth-that-still-is (so far). There was no Serenity or even Star Wars trailer attached to H2G2 at the Hollywood Cinema, but both were attached at the Regal.

It wasn't a crowded theater on Sunday night -- maybe one-third full. The Star Wars trailer looked really good. It was a new one I hadn't seen before. Serenity came right after, and I was concerned that it wouldn't be able to hold it's own in a direct comparison. People began taking notice during the River kicking ass part, then the Joss, Buffy, and critics blurbs, suggested this wasn't your ordinary space opera. Wash's "Oh God, oh God..." line raised some laughs, and Mal's shoot first bit drew Whows. I think it did pretty well.

I liked the H2G2 movie. I had seen the BBC TV mini-series years ago and then read the first book: again, years ago. Lately, I have the original radio plays on my iPod. In all cases, the story seemed of secondary importance; it was the substrate that collected together all that wit that goes deeper than it has any right to. Sure, some of my favorite bits were missing -- "Mostly harmless," but that made room for new ones -- new to me anyway. What does the Book have to say about rescuing someone from the Vogonosphere? The P.O.V. gun? Hi-larious!

Some of the abrupt editing suggests this is going to be another movie where we won't get the proper version until the DVD "Director's Cut." As others have said, the ending just doesn't fit. I smell Disney's "happy" hand at work.

To end on my own happy note, I find Zooey Deschanel to be completely dreamy in a geeky sort of way, so when she waggled her stuffed dog at Arthur and said, "I thought the beagle would have given it away," I swooned.

I think quite a bit. I don't really have any interest in Hitchhickers but am seriously entertaining the notion of seeing it just for our Serenity trailer.

I saw it twice, because the first time I missed the previews. Walked in on the opening song.

Second time I sat in the theater for 30 minutes so I would'nt miss them. And they didn't show the Serenity trailer. I would've walked out, but I had a very large tub of popcorn begging me to finish it.

just finished reading the 3rd & 4th books in the series, which to be honest have little to recommend them (don't have the 5th one & not sure I care). Anyhow, in the 4th book, Arthur finds himself back on Earth. Whilst he's been in space for 8 years, only about 8 months have passed on Earth and everyone's under the impression that the Vogon ships were the result of CIA hallucigins.

Personally, I think the singing dolphins made more sense than that...

I just saw the movie (I know I'm late, but I live in a small town, and it takes a while for stuff to reach here) and I was a little disappointed, so I thought I'd check out what was said here.

I wasn't expecting the trailer, as I'm in the UK, so I was basically just looking for an entertaining movie for a weekend night - but -
it was so interesting to read here that Douglas Adams had a hand in re-writing the 'love story' between Trillian and Arthur - because this part of the movie really annoyed me.

It kind of felt like they'd had a meeting where they sat down and said, okay, we'll take out all the bits in the books where Trillian is interesting or smart, and instead we'll just find an actress with really big round eyes.

She did have a couple of good lines, but otherwise I felt that the way she was written changed the 'feel' of the books much more than any of the new stuff or other re-writes.

The other thing was I kept thinking about milk cartons... do you remember that Blur video for 'Coffee and TV' with the cute little milk carton? That was done by Hammer and Tongs too...

Oh, and Marvin was fantastic.
