DB. Big Buffy/Angel fan but didn't know much going in. I know the exact moment when I got hooked. It all went something like this for me:

1. Never saw any commercials (thank you, Replay!), heard about it from a roommate.
2. Couldn't quite figure it out from the official website.
3. Train Job - Pretty good, but that was an awful lot of exposition in the first 5 minutes....
4. Bushwacked - Oh, look, baseball that's not the Sox.
5. OMR - OK... funny... interesting... "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth!" THIS IS THE SHOW.

Magical few months during the series. Darn near cried when I saw the first/last episode. Then... heartbreak, hope, heartbreak... movie, what? Please, please, please. Yes! Pushed back?! No! Advance screening? Yes!

See you Boston Browncoats Thursday.

GAVIDA

Have to say, I am an AD.

In my defense I have to say:

Firefly didn't run on german TV as far as I know.
Only heard of it from some friends, who got it by peer-to-peer.
A friend then bought the Box from Amazon UK.
I visited him like every Friday and saw about 2 minutes from it (my friend has the same kind of humour I have and he only showed me Crowe's "exit" from the show ).

I borrowed (uhm... borrow = I get it, lend = friend gives it? or was it the other way around?)
the Box that evening from him, came home around 1 am in the morning. Started to watch the Pilot and had to force myself to go to bed instead of watching "Train Job".
Saturday to Sunday I watched the whole Series, Sunday evening I ordered my own copy of Firefly from Amazon UK

See ya,
Gavida

Ha! Had been thinking about posting a similar threas myself, albeit I wouldn't have thought up the smart abbreviations!

I'm an AD.

I'd watched Buffy from the beginning, then Angel - I'd read about Firefly but never saw any of it (I'm in the UK and don't have cable etc - was it even shown at all in the UK?). Anyhow, the reviews for the DVD were all so shiny, and being huge fans of Buffy & Angel I decided to take the risk and buy the box-set without having seen a single second of it.

Needless to say, never regretted it. Religiously watched 2 episodes per night (3 on the last night of course) and now looking forward to that shiny BDM

Oh, and I second/third that emotion about forgetting to set the VCR etc - or worse, someone watching something and forgetting to reset the timer!

One final thought, a few people have complained about the trailer mentioning Buffy & Angel. I do appreciate their fear that this could put some people off but at the same time it's pretty clear from this post that most people watched Firefly because they were already fans of Joss's work. What would the ratings had been if the show had been made by an unknown? So give Buffy & Angel their due - those shows played a big part in Firefly making it as far as 13 episodes...

"Why would I want to leave Serenity?"
"Can't think of a reason."

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

DB.

I watched "Train Job" when it aired and Mal kicking Crow through the engine hooked me right then and there.

Definately BF.
I've been a fan since the first ep. of Buffy.
As soon as I heard Joss and sci-fi series I was there. Saw train job in the hospital.(with a friend not in myself) Every friday we had three families in one house watching FF. I found my way here some time ago and lurked for a long time before joining in.(I'm kinda shy) Bought box set as soon as it came out. Suncoast had a missprint and I got it for @20 bucks. Since then I've bought two more. One for my friend and the outher for his dad. Soon getting anouther to lend out to recruit new browncoats.

BD... The very first time I heard about Firefly. It was many many months ago and my good buddy (known as Tash to y'all) called me on the phone and said I should turn it on.

Unfortunately, I turned on the wrong show... a show called birds of prey, which I thought was the show I was supposed to be checking out, and so I missed Firefly. I thought to myself, this show doesn't make any sense, who is this batgirl, I don't understand. And because I thought "birds of prey" was Firefly, I didn't ever watch Firefly when it was on t.v.

And so, I missed the first and only American run of Firefly, because I thought it was something else. Rest assured, When I finally saw the real Firefly, I was hooked. But then, y'all know the rest of the story...

Definitely a BF - but I didn't actually get to see the show until AD. I managed to be out of the country the entire time Fox broadcast the show, and had to wait until it came out on DVD! As a Buffy fan from Season 1, this was quite a dissapointment!

AD here
Although I'm a big Buffy/Angel fan, I'm in the UK where Firefly only aired on Sci-fi. It was also during my first year of uni and I didn't have a telly of my own, let alone access to satellite, so there was no easy way to watch it.

Fast forward to last year, when I came across a Buffy news site linking to a page with all the Firefly eps for download. I was bored and looking for something to fill the gap left by the cancellation of Angel, so I decided 'Hey, I'll give it a try' and downloaded The Train Job.
Unfortunately this site still had the eps listed in the order F*X had shown them, but it didn't matter, cos I was hooked, and I'd downloaded and watched the rest of the series within a week. I then bought the DVDs from play.com and rewatched them all again within another week.
Nowadays I just put an episode on every so oftem when I'm feeling down, or not in the mood for working, and it perks me right up again.

So far, I've converted at least one more Browncoat (though it was relatively easy, she was a big Buffy fan, so I got her the DVDs for Christmas, and within a week she was quoting lines at me).
I'm currently in the process of converting another, he's borrowed my DVDs, and was a little unsure at first, but has stuck with it and is now half way through disc 2. He did seem a little confused about Serenity/The Train Job until I explained how F*X had screwed with the pilot.

Only problem is now I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms without my DVDs, and I'm seriously considering picking up a second set!

During UK Broadcast for me.
I was flicking, a big part of the fun of having tv, and happened upon something that caught my interest on the SciFi channel. Wasn't quite sure what it was, but managed to catch it again and again. I ended up watching several of the episodes several times and yet always missed the same ones. Even so I was completely drawn in and hooked.
I made my boyfriend watch it, who promptly shipped the box set from the states. I borrowed that and watched it, then finally bought my own set when they were released here. I lent it out before I'd finished watching them again so had to buy another set! Have just been to my first ever con this weekend and of course it was total Firefly. (to put it in perspective I've been a big stargate fan for quite a few years and I've never been tempted enough to go to a con, yet a show that I barely saw on tv and has less than half a season's worth of episodes on dvd not only prompted me to go to a con (despite health conerns), but I enjoyed it much more than i would have a con for a show i've been following for years!)

AD..........

I have my Buffy dvds and it pretty much was the only show I watched on TV till it too ended. So really I've never been much of a tv watcher since about ninth grade (I'm twenty two now).

My BF lured me into watching Firefly when he got the dvd set at Wal-Mart and told me it was by the man who created Buffy. That was all the recommendation I needed. I watched the whole set in less than a week.

I Love my BF! Yes I do.

Well folks, this thread and the release of the trailer finally got me off my posterior to register for the site and respond. And, since I've been watching the show since its first broadcast epi (for which I waited with bated breath based on both TV previews and print ads, so I guess I qualify as BF, despite being a newby on this site). I figured I'd better sign up now, so that I'm no longer a newby by the time the BDM comes out! I'm not much of a TV watcher (I spend too much time reading), and Firefly was the first show I had really looked forward to in a long time. But I didn't even get to see all the epi's 'cause F***s kept moving it around, so when I heard on NPR about the DVD's for "the best show nobody ever saw" I bought them immediately and have been wearing them out ever since. Even made a few converts onthe way. I've been an occasional lurker for quite a while, and it's very interesting reading what y'all come up with. I'm continually amazed at the diversity of thought and opinion on the site, and yet it stays pretty civil on the whole. Nice work! (And I'm glad I finally came in from the cold.)

We need to add a new time delimiter:

PS - Post Screening

And then, as of September 30:

PR - Post Release.

Despite the wild ranting about spewing spoilers, I get the impression there will be some successful recruiting done between the screening and the movie release, and I am certain that we can recruit more to our ranks after the BDM is truly released on the world.

I'm a BF. Saw part of trailer that had a low-flying spaceship spooking a heard of horses. I sat through an excrutiaitingly painful episode of Malcom in the middle, just to see the whole trailer. I thought "this could be interesting". After watching one episode, I was hooked. I watched it every time it was on the air, and yelling at the local F*x station (over the phone) when it was preemted by sports programming. (I hate sports that don't involve an internal combustion engine)

I so was pissed off when they cancelled it, I blocked channel. After a year, the pain faded away and I forgot about Firefly.

Untill, one day I was browsing around in my local video rental store, and what do my eyes behold? A familiar looking ship and her crew looking at me from the new releases shelf! The "WOOHOO!" I let out scared everyone in the store. I grabbed all 4 of the discs, paid an very un-amused clerk, and left a 75 foot long trail of burned rubber getting home to watch our Big Damn Heros. I spent about $90 renting the discs (the video store rents each disk seperatly), then my mom gave me the box set for Christmas.

I'm a DB and an AD. I saw the show when it was originally broadcast and watched every ep. Loved it, and was pissed at it going away. But at the time I merely chalked it up as another title on my list of great show screwed over. I still had 24 to tide me over as well as other shows I watched religiously.

But I re-discovered the show when I both heard that production on the BDM was about to begin and that my brother discovered the show for himself. So I bought the DVD set myself, rewatched the show and stumbled onto here.

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

Saw the trailers on the SiFi channel on UK SKY
TV, thought the show looked interesting...

So we watched a few episodes, got the DVD from the USA before it was released over here and watched them over again and again (lost count!)

Have spent the output of a small country on various items on Ebay and attending Cons, bank balance has suffered but we have made some great friends and feel richer for being Browncoats.

Been hooked ever since, love Serenity, Objects, War Stories, Out of Gas (Hell, love the gorram lot of them)
