I appreciate that. My wife & I are talking bout it. She's rather excited bout the idea. We also have a possible trip out to the west coast to see family bout that time, but that could technically wait till Christmas. Family or Firely? Ok that makes me sound really evil & shallow. Anyway, we're looking at the budget and doing some planning. This is looking very very possible. I so wanna go & meet many of you all as well. Thanks for the feedback on the shirts. It's just so much fun making them.

I try to put them as high as possible. Zazzle has a limit on how high a logo can be placed.

I always stay in the Hyatt's International Tower. It is quiet, a bit separated from the main hotel and is very comfortable with a great view of the downtown area. The elevators don't have the horrible waits that the main hotel does, and it is just as close to everything you want to do.

The Marriott is okay if you want to be close as possible to the dealer rooms and the walk of fame, and it tends to be quieter. I just like the Hyatt better personally.

Thanks BC1!

Well, I just got off the phone with the Hyatt. No problem getting a room, and at the convnetion rate. So anyone looking for a room should absolutely call direct. Don't go on-line like I did or you will be told they are sold out.

This is great! I got the hotel I wanted and the days off of work I needed. Come on September!

I'm sure that someone is on top of this already, but if they're not...I'd like to have a Browncoat shindig at Dragon Con. Except I've never been to a con or Atlanta, and I don't have a clue how to set it up! So, I've posted on the official site ( http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=for

), and am looking for someone in the know or willing to point me in the right direction. Thanks everyone!!

Just to add to the great advice Fireflygal and BC1 has been giving, here's a little advice re: how to cut your costs: besides the food court (which requires actually *leaving* the con, and hey, who has time for that), I usually pack some "pack friendly" food that I can throw in a tote bag (see my store below for shiny Browncoat ones!) or backpack -- apples, protein bars (non-Alliance), trail mix, bottled water that I can refill if necessary, so that if something comes up that I just CAN'T miss, I'm not going hungry and getting headachy and surly.

As far as other coin that's hard to avoid spending, it has to be the Walk of Fame..the autographs tend to go for about $20 each. That's how a lot of those stars make their expenses to come to the con, as they're not always guests who are on the main schedule, and even if they are, they will likely charge you for each autograph, sometimes restricting you to only their photographs that they sell (which is an additional $5-10). I blew through most of my discretionary coinage here, and had to balance eating, getting other cool things I wanted, and how many autographs I could get. I missed getting some I really wanted; luckily I'm not a huge collector, but there were some people there who I am a fan of and would have liked the sig from.

Absolute best advice, as mentioned before, CALL the hotel, mention you're with DragonCon, and don't be picky about what they've got left. Also, find roommates. You're not in the room for much else but a quick crash or change of clothes, so it's really not a big deal, and cuts down on the cost tremendously.

Looking forward to meeting all the new Browncoats this year...and we thought last year was great......this year is going to be incredibly shiny!!!

P.S., What IS the word on the Browncoat ball? Anyone heard from SendMeAWave lately? I'm chomping at the bit to get going on planning!

Last I heard SHK, the vote that we took was meaningless and they were going to hold the Browncoat Ball around LA as part of a premiere shindig for the West Coasters. Disappointing really since the browncoat community voted overwhelmingly to hold it at Dragon Con this year.

As for Rich, I have not heard from him in awhile. No new messages and the planning for Dragon Con has kind of stalled without him. With his being local to the Atlanta area it is easy for him to make things happen, but he has been scarce for a few weeks now.

I am eager to get some planning done too so we can start the buzz about shindigs, viewings, etc.

Well, poo....doesn't mean we can't have a Mighty Fine Shindig (TM) at DragonCon, even if it isn't the "official" Browncoat Ball! I mean, after all, if most of the cast and Joss is going to be at D*C, why not have a big damn party???!

I'm concerned we haven't heard anything from Rich, and don't want to rain on his parade, but I think we need to start looking at options...maybe offered with the Buffy track? Someone posted that they work with the American SciFi Track (which Buffy is part of), and I'm wondering if we should start dropping a few lines that way.

I'm trying to get some word on donated (or at least cheap) items that we could use as fundraisers for either a fan suite (like they did for Farscape last year) or (my preference) to fund a BDParty...I'll have to see what develops.

My feelings exactly! Who needs the official Browncoat Ball? We will just have one heck of a Shindig on our own.

I am starting to believe you may be right. There has not been an email or post from Rich since February 27th. I have emailed him and am waiting to see if I get a response. I am getting a bit concerned though as we have less than four months to the Con. If we are going to make plans, we need to get started. We might want to touch base w/ the American Sci Fi track to see if we can reach the cooridinator for the Buffy track. She was great last year about helping Rich put the Firefly stuff together, but I can't remember her name.

I can check into a few things on my end. If we are going to do a Con suite I think I remember Rich saying it cost something like $1500.00 for the weekend. A might steep, but that covered all food and beverage costs. Maybe a call for donations might be in order. That or scratch the idea.

Might want to think about getting another SE Browncoat or two to step up and take the reins until Rich shows back up.

FFG,

Sendmeawave finally showed back up on the net after being of the radar of a couple of months. Seems he has been attending the Dragon Con planning meetings in Atlanta, but has been pretty overwhelmed w/ life, work, etc. Some of the Southeast browncoats in the Atlanta area are offering to help out, so hopefully we will have some plans in place soon.

StillShiny, you won't find any sort of schedule for months yet, unfortunately the schedule doesn't usually show up till a couple of weeks before. RHEAKTEN

Greetings! I was just introduced to Firefly by some friends this week, as they loaned me the DVD set. It took about 5 minutes to become a fan, and I've had very little sleep since then! People at work are wondering why I look so tired...

I have been to several DragonCon's and wasn't sure I was going to attend this year, but seeing that the kit and caboodle from Firefly are going to be there decided me! I can't WAIT! I live in the Atlanta area, so I will probably not be staying at the con hotels, especially since I'm leaving for a 3-week trip overseas on the 5th, so I REALLY should save a leeeetle bit of dough for that. I will, however, be glad to help out a bit with getting together a shindig during the con. I would volunteer to coordinate it, but I have too much going on, and would not be able to devote enough time to such an enterprise. I do have the time to help out, though, so anyone who is working on this, feel free to let me know!

I am looking forward to getting to know Firefly a lot better and to possibly meeting other fans of the show, not to mention (hopefully!) the cast at D*C!

Take care, all!

Sita, that is so shiny if you have some coin to donate!! One Browncoat, SendMeAWave, did most of the planning last year and I am sure it would make things a LOT easier if he had financial help. There was some talk of having a Browncoat suite for the con and it's pretty pricey. I believe there's also talk of a fan table. Browncoat1 was in touch with SendMeAWave. Hey BC1, you out there? Not that it would be easy to convince hubby to part with the cash, and I may have to forgo my next several birthdays, Valentine's Days, Mother's Days, Christmases, etc. but it's do-able. Do you know approx how many fans gathered last year? Were there parties in the suite every night?

Thank you Sita for possibly sacrificing your next several holiday's for the Browncoats! Last year I'm not sure if we gathered in the regular con suite or if it was a Browncoat suite last year. There was about 18-24 folks crowded around a TV watching Firefly and at least a couple dozen more milling about, in and out. Adam Baldwin paid a visit to the suite at least once, he showed us the Serenity blooper reel on his laptop computer. I don't know if you would say there were "parties". The suite price includes some kinds of food and drink but it was fairly calm, not anything wild. I e-mailed Browncoat1 off line, so he should be riding in to the rescue with some better info for you, like a contact with Sendmeawave.
Hugs to you and hubby

SLAYTHIS

Hey Guys,
Forgive the absence - I only check message-boards so regularly. I met a handful of you (FFG, BC1, ShinyHappyKlin and Sendmeawave) at the con last year, and I can't wait to see you again in September. And yes - I will be in line to get in to the Centennial Ballroom ridiculously early in the morning, and I will stay there all day - all 3 days if necessary. This year's con will be great!!!
And for all you newbs - welcome, and you're in for a bigger treat than you realize. The con alone, even void of Firefly goodness, is an amazing amount of fun - add to that the fact that the BDHs were arguably the best guests the con had ever seen. I honestly think that by the end of the weekend, Nathan knew every Browncoat by first name. They were amazing. And a final note - I am poor and (very recently) unemployed, so I can't really help with the donation of coin; however, I am an Atlantan, so I could do a bit of help with the planning - that is when I'm not preoccupied with looking for a job. What was the Yahoo group dedicated to the planning of Firefly events at DC? I've not visited there since changing my ISP back in October. See you soon!!!

Hugs! sita:)

Hello Sita, welcome to the site. Glad to have you delurking, especially in light of your most generous effort.

Rich, a.k.a Sendmeawave, is the browncoat in Atlanta that is coordinating the Firefly/Browncoat table, the fan panels, and the possibility of a Con suit. I will be happy to pass your very kind offer along to him.

When he asks, how might I tell him he can reach you?

Hey Guys,
Forgive the absence - I only check message-boards so regularly.

SlayThis,

I am looking forward to seeing you at Dragon Con again this year! It was great meeting you last year.

If you would like to help with planning I would suggest checking out this site:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fireflyserenitybrowncoats/

We are in the planning stages now for Dragon Con. Rich (Sendmeawave) has been spearheading the planning and attending the Dragon Con meetings in Atlanta. He has asked for an Atlanta local browncoat to help out w/ meetings & organizing. Maybe you could give him a hand. I would, but living in Richmond makes it impossible for me to do so.

I think as we get closer to Dragon Con we should get a list going of who all plans to attend so we can discuss meeting up to introduce ourselves, or get reacquainted for those of us that were fortunate enough to have met last year.

I am thinking of doing a Browncoat flag or Independent flag to carry around so it can be seen above the heads of the crowd so other browncoats can rally to it to mix and mingle. What do you think?

That sounds awesome BC1, also what time does the con open/close? Maybe we could do a Browncoat breakfast or dinner?

SITA

Hey Browncoat1! Hey All!

I think I'll just join the list you told SlayThis about, as that will allow me to help plan as well.

I like to do that. I'm a planner.

I'm a little concerned that Fireflygal thought that only 24-18 people used the consuite last year. While I don't have any con experience whatsoever, I do have nearly ten years in the hotel business, and if the goal is to promote the movie, I wouldn't consider that party a win at all. That's just not much of a turnout and hardly seems worth the expense. I mean, someone could get a double guestroom, shout 'Browncoat party tonight in room ____' after one of the BDH panels, and fit more people in with people spilling out and milling around in the hallway. Suddenly, to great effect, we have a crowd for any BDHs, who may or may not drop by the party, to see.

Whereas, the same number of partygoers in a suite, not so much.

I'm not trying to be a naysayer. I'm really not. I just wanted y'all to think about that, because if we do it, we need to promote the consuite like we're selling ice that's melting in the heat. Anyone who appears mildly interested in hearing more about Serenity should be dragged up there. The suite is a commodity - a very expensive commodity. And the value is limited to a fixed place in time. Every minute it's empty is money wasted.

Wow, that sounded harsh. I didn't mean for it to... Sorry to veer off on into a trademark sita profitability rant, but I think we should give a lot of thought to how we're going to use the room before we commit. There might actually be a better application of the money - a better way to promote the movie to con goers - if we get creative.

Food for thought.

Hugs! sita:)

My wife & I get into Atlanta on Thursday night so we can settle in and unpack. Dragon Con scheduled bands and a few events last year on Thursday night for the early con goers and we had a blast.

The Con itself does not start until about 9am on Friday for panels and some events, but the Dealer Room, Art Room & Walk of Fame don't open until 10am. The stars start showing up around 10, but some come in later, just kind of up to them I think.

As far as shut down, the Con's dealers shut down around 6 or 8 pm. The fan panels run until 9 or 10. Some events like anime films and other events like concerts run until midnight or later. There are also room parties & the bar which last until the wee hours of the morning.

Looking forward to meeting you there Canton.

SLAYTHIS

First - I think I may disagree a bit about the number of people in the con suite last year. The night that the Browncoats took over the suite, the room got so crowded that there was actually a staff member at the door maintaining crowd and traffic control. The number of people that arrived early, staked a turf claim, and stayed put throughout the evening may have been less than 30 (and that included Fireflygal and Shinyhappyklin - you guys were in the comfy sofa zone; you may not have even realized how very crowded the room became,) but during the time I was in the suite, there were at least twice that many, if not several more. Also, it was clear that people were and had been coming and going. It was actually too crowded for me that evening, so I missed Adam's appearance. I can't speak to the con suite the rest of the weekend, but the night it was dedicated to Firefly - the place was hopping.
Also, just to follow up Browncoat1's notes on the schedule - if you are able to check in and get your con pass on Thursday evening, you should definitely do so. If not, I would suggest trying to pick up your pass as early in the morning as possible. The line gets huge during the days on the weekend.

Tried to get my Hotel res done & Mariott said they were full up for that block, even mentioned the "code." No go. So they got us something fairly close at the Renaissance Atlanta. Bout 5 minutes away. The rate is reasonable. Holiday rate 89$. Is there tax in Atlanta??? Remember I'm from OK.
