Hi everyone!

I had a few too many muscle relaxants the other night and sent the following to Oprah:

Oprah and staff,

There is a major cult following for a TV show that was cancelled by Fox in 2002. Those fans demanded (and are receiving!) a major motion picture based on the series "Firefly" by Joss Whedon (creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"). It is being released by Universal Studios on 9-30-05 and is HIGHLY anticipated by millions of rabid fans worldwide. I/we would LOVE to see Joss and the cast on your show. Trust me when I say this movie will be HUGE. There is a groundswell of support for the movie and if you were able to interview the cast and Joss, you would be light-years ahead of other interviewers and scoop the rest of the industry. Please research my claims and consider having them on the show. You will not be disappointed. You might want to review the show as well, it is available on DVD (currently the 42nd best seller of all time on Amazon.com--for a cancelled show that only aired 11 episodes out of 14!) The writing is exceptional: humorous, suspenseful, intense and intriguing. The casting is spot-on, including Nathan Fillion (2 Guys and a Girl, One Life to Live), Adam Baldwin (My Bodyguard, Independence Day), Ron Glass (of Barney Miller fame), and Alan Tudyk (I, Robot, 28 Days, A Knight's Tale, Dodgeball, etc). Please consider this, you would have a built in audience of several million, beyond your usual audience. Really. And if I could be there in the audience, all the better!

Thank you,

Mal-Licious

I think we will begin to see Joss and the cast on shows done by Universal or aired on Universal owned TV stations around late summer. I don't think we'll see anything now especially with a whole shitload of big movies coming out this summer.

If the movie does well at the box office then we will see more of this kind of stuff but not until the movie is a success otherwise the media will ignore it for the most part.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

"What is an Oprah?"

I am just kidding, I kind of know what "Oprah" is, but can't watch it here in germany and many here (probably including me) have a strange impression on what Oprah really is

There are so many bad "Talk-Shows" here on german TV, so I am not sure what to make of it. But I know I wouldn't want to see the BDH and Joss in one of them over here.

See ya,
Gavida

Okay RKLenseth, Quicksand, SergeanTX, I'm Early, Gavida and Rat:

Thanks for the negativity! I really appreciate it! Not.

I figured that with Oprah's influence on popular culture, the success of the BDM would be a given. I didn't realize that you people were so ungracious as to discredit an idea that was put forth with innocent hopefullness. I also notice that each of you are male. Oprah's rabidly loyal audience is largely female. Females happen to be a large part of the movie-viewing audience. Hmmm.

Oprah viewer: "Those people being interviewed were smart and funny. The clips of the movie were interesting as well. I think I'll go see it! Plus, if Oprah endorses it, it's gotta be good," they might think.

Oh, well. I thought it was worth a shot.

Thanks, Howdy, for being supportive!

Hey, from a guy who doesn't like Opera very much:
I think you should go for it.

Seriously, Opera isn't my thing, but I definitely think that every method of getting the word out should be tried, up to the point of decency and legality, of course.

And I think you're right, there may be some who like what they see/hear and decide to check it out. Every one counts, cuz that's another voice in the call for others to join in...

You're very welcome Malicious! I even sent in an email to the Oprah show myself. I honestly don't understand where the dislike of Oprah comes from. How do you hate one of the biggest Humanitarians in history? Even if I didn't like the show, how could it be a bad thing that it was on a highly regarded high profile television show?

From the Dragon-Con panel,

Woooah!
I am sorry you didn't get the joke with the line from Teal'c. It is a SG-1-thingy. It was one of the lines he said that really cracked me up

And I was not negative, I stated (as seen above) that I can not say if I think that it is "good" or "bad" since I have no idea how "Oprah" is. Of course I do know what it is, since I don't live on the dark side of the moon (Otherwise I would have missed the joke in SG-1, right?)

I only said I wouldn't like to see the BDH on a german Talk-Show. That was more or less a statement about the poor quality on german TV.

@Static: Doh! That was funny

Hope I cleared that up a bit.

See ya,
Gavida

I like Oprah, she's cool and all be I just don't see them on her show. I dunno why, I just can't put my finger on it. But I could defineitly see them on Conan O'Brian. Conan is a funny guy and add that to Joss's humor and cast equals very sore stomechs in morning from laughing so much.

Outstanding idea, Mal! All it takes is one mention from Oprah to send a book to the top of the best seller charts. If she becomes a Browncoat she could single-handedly increase the Browncoat ranks by millions!

Maybe we should all donate a dollar to buy her the DVDs?

(I shudder to think, however, what would happen if she even casually mentioned that she didn't like Firefly).

Nice letter, Mal! I think Oprah's format would be well-suited for a 10-person guest-fest. As for audience/demographic considerations, I do recall that Firefly tested quite well with female audiences (them as actually got a chance to see it!), and Joss has an admirable insight into the female consciousness. So, yah; I think a spot on harpO is not at all farfetched, and could generate some truly lovely buzz for our BDM.

Conan's show would be a good venue for a select portion of the cast and crew (or, ideally, serial appearances by one or a couple at a time over the course of a week....).

Personally, though, I'd love to see Joss on "The Daily Show." As hit-or-miss as my opinion of Jon Stewart's politix may be, I very much like his witty, subversive, at times surprisingly erudite and incisive style. The tale of a brilliant show, knee-capped by a (Murdoch-owned) Mega-Network, yet rising from its ashes by the persistence of a visionary creator and a passionate fan-base is right up Jon's alley. Plus they'd be funny as hell together!

Noocyte,

Oh, Lord! Joss and Jon! I don't think my ears could hear fast enough for my brain to comprehend all the funny stuff said during an interview between the two of them. I'd have to tape it and replay it over and over and over......Kind of like I do with Firefly.

SIGMANUNKI

I must lend my voice to the NO side.

Oprah in the beginning was a breath of fresh air as she that the one talk show out there that had some dignity (ie no "my brother is the father of my baby" episodes).

But, in recent times she has become an "elegant" form of the bad ones.

\begin{rant}
Case and point:
She had this guy on the wrote a book called "He's just not into you" or some such. And Oprah fully endorsed his "advice." This guy, I now refer to as, "the idiot." And he has earned every ounce of that.

The first time he was on (yes he's been on more than once, perhaps book sales weren't going that well), he was giving his "advice" to some poor woman.

She really wanted to get married, but her fiancee didn't really want to. The story goes that they were both divorced, etc. Wait a minute. I'm just assuming the etc because they never actually went into it.

His first "advice" was, he's just not into you, dump him.

Any thinking person will notice that he didn't ask one question about the current situation, if she'd talked to him about why, what was his divorce like, etc. Just, he's just not into you, dump him. Oprah even echo'd it, "Didn't you hear the man? he's just not into you."

Now one might wonder what credentials this idiot had. He was a writter on Sex and the City. This makes him the proud possessor of bloody well zero credentials.

And there he was (with Oprah) sitting up on stage, zero signs of compassion for this woman that was in tears.

The second time he was on he was giving the same "advice" to another couple. I say couple because the man was on this time.

When questioned why this guy didn't want to get married, he replied, "I don't know." The idiot said, "Not good enough" (I agree, but only on this one point). The man continued, "It might have something to do with the fact that everyone in my family has been divorced at least once."

This, IMO, is a *very* good answer. Clearly divroce has been an continued element in his life, one in which he clearly has issues with. Clearly, he's going to have issues with getting married if the only known conclution is messy (even not messy) divorce.

But, what does the idiot say, "That has nothing to do with you! This is between the both of you and nothing to do with anyone else!"

So what, the members of someone's family now doesn't effect the other members of the family?!?!! Is this guy serious?!?!? In fact, he was, and Oprah agreed.

Her statment was, "Maybe you [speaking to the man] should get someone that doesn't want to get married. And you [speaking to the woman] should get someone that wants to get married."

I thank that gods that this couple seemed to be taken zero from these two idiots.
\end{rant}

So, those that have read this far are probably going to agree to the phrase, "You cannot boil down something as complex as human relationships, to a catch phrase. Say no to fast food relationships!" Which is exactly what the idiot and Oprah were promoting.

This is the main reason why I would NOT like Joss and the crew to be on this show.

EDIT: I like the Conan idea
