Ok, I braved the trailer, and as a fan it looks pretty damn amazing but I am really worried.

Does anyone else think they have over-done the Joss/Buffy/Angel/millions of fans blurb?

Me personally, I love Joss, would vote him in for supreme rule of the universe BUT...

most people I know, even sci-fi fans don't think Buffy and Angel are a selling point and as much as I love our little Browncoat world I am not sure people should be told about it.

We need this film to make big-bucks but the trailer struck me as 1) desparate and 2) not general enough.

Please dispel my fears

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am not really concerned about the reference to BtVS & Angel in the trailer because those two shows got Joss on the radar and what opened the door at Fox for Firefly to begin with. Do I think mentioning them will drive fans away? Not necessarily, in fact I think it may help to sway some Buffy / Angel hold outs to give the BDM a shot. It will also give some cred to the movie for those who may have heard of Joss and his shows.

I did not get a feeling of "desperation" from the trailer, nor do I think it was too specific. I think it was done perfectly to draw in the eye candy/Hollywood space battle types, the uninitiated, and sci fi fans in general.

My overall feeling after viewing the trailer (nearly two dozen times now) is one of elation, excitement, and impatience to see the BDM.

Hope this helps to dispel your fears.

I think that having the Buffy & Angel bits up there will give some credit to Joss - otherwise he could be seen as an unknown, but by having his work labeled it shows some of what he has achieved and the success it was.

The trailer as it stands has a lot of good bits, and a lot of sneek peeks of stuff to come, I can recollect the screenings I attended and there is stuff in the trailer from beginning, middle & end (in fact the very last minute [NO! that`s not a spoiler!])

Don`t worry too much about the trailer, it showed a lot but not enough to spoil your viewing of the movie.

And for those who have stop-motion/freeze framed the whole trailer - doesn`t River look like she`s enjoying herself when she dances?

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I can't see the trailer the way someone who has never seen Firefly will. But I tried to look @it objectively, and I have to agree with you. I think it is a particular mistake to emphasize Buffy & Angel and their fans. How many of those don't already know whether they're commited to seeing the BDM? On the other hand, there may be many folks who passed on Firefly 'cause it was created by the same guy who created B&A. There's still lots of time so, I'm hoping there'll be another, quite different, trailer.

MONTANAGIRL

At first I thought that it was really unnecessary to bring up the whole Joss/Buffy/Angel thing. But upon further reflection I think they had to set up a point of reference to which they could say "his unique vision of the future." That was how they got the point across that this is a sci-fi show but it's going to be different from what people are accustomed to seeing in the genre.

I wish they could have done it without having to mention Buffy and Angel because I'm sure that is going to turn some people off. I'm sure later trailers are going to lose that angle, but I can sort of see where they were coming from with this first one. Or at least make a small argument for it.

PSYCHICRIVER

I know of some people that would be turned-off by the btvs/ats mentions...

But they are people that wouldn't go to see this film anyway. Its not their type of "thing".

"We can take care of each other. I'll knit!"

Summer Glau to me - "You are so photogenic."

The trouble is that you need a 'hook' to hang films on. Nowadays you can't just put a film out there and hope it finds an audience, you have to say something about it. When it doesn't have a star (and Serenity really doesn't) you have to say 'From the Makers of' and when the makers have done nothing of note, you say 'In the tradition of'. Of course, if you have to say 'In the tradition of', you might as well hand out blunt implements for the audience to gouge out their own eyes.

Or my other pet hate, 'If you liked (insert name of good movie) then you'll love (insert name of derivative craptacular movie)!' Warning signs the pair of them.

It's not going to be the trailer that draws the majority of the potential audience in. It's going to be us.

Joss made a point of mentioning that there is no star power to draw people to this movie. He said that us and our promotion of the movie are going to be the big factor. I think that's the problem the trailer had to overcome. It can't flash some stars at you. It had to find something to go with and Buffy and Angel were all they really had to go on. I think it's a good trailer all in all.

A really mixed bag of ideas there, I hope a couple more trailers come out. There may be millions of us but I am pretty sure we won't put enough bums on seats for the execs - how many times can we all realistically see Serenity in the opening weekend?

Oh, the pain...
