If you've seen the movie: age-appropriateness?

With three tickets to the Chicago screening, my wife and I are contemplating taking our 3-y.o. (almost 4) daughter. She has seen the show and watched most of the episodes with us. I have skipped the gory bits from War Stories, for example, and Niska's nephew in the Train Job.

What rating do you think the film will land, and would it frighten her? How is the language?

NO SPOILERS, please--if you describe any violence, no names.

I would... not recommend it. The swearing, I don't actually recall if there was any, so if there was, it was very minimal. However, there's a lot of dead, rotting bodies, gruesome faces (i.e. reavers) burns, a couple of people are handy with swords, people get shot, burned, poisoned, stabbed, etc etc... you get the point. I'd pitch it as more gory than the bits you mentioned skipping, so for someone so young, it would probably frighten her a lot.

It may well scare her, honestly. There's a lot of jumpy moments (not seen in the show), and a fair amount of violence.

In the US it's being aimed at PG-13. The UK is currently 12 (but may change).

Okay, there's one bit of bad language and quite a bit of violence. In fact, lots of violence. Really quite nasty violence.

If you would skip the torture from War Stories, then you shouldn't take her to this movie. Sorry, but I don't think it's suitable.

Get a sitter. I would not take my 3 year old out to a 10pm movie if it were Bambi.

Thanks everyone for the advice! She'll stay with my mom. The only reason we really had to contemplate it is that it's a 5-hour drive to Chicago!

I had hoped that the swearing was in line with the series. Sounds like that's the case. Good!

LOL - If "gorram" or the Chinese translation for "filthy fornicators of livestock" qualify as offensive profanity, then this movie is full of it. Personally, I don't think I would bring a child younger than 11 or 12 to the movie. The level of violence wasn't that much greater than the show, but the intensity of it was. And there were scenes that scared the feyou out of me. Aside from that, I'm not certain that it would hold the attention of a young child. It's really aimed at adults.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

To take the unpopular view, and as the father of a seven year old child...

I do not think I would inflict a 3 year old on the audience. The ability to grasp the movie is likely lacking, and the likelihood of becoming ornery is high.

Little'uns and DVD were made for each other.

I have to agree with Anthony:
it would be stressful for a three year old to sit through a five hour car ride,
and then be expected to behave well during a 2 hour movie in a packed theater after 10 pm
(getting up to go to the potty? Would be very disturbing to everyone around you!)

And altho the violence is fairly bloodless,
it is loud and abrupt and scary for children older than three.
Maybe Grandma can provide a special treat so that this is a nice fun time away from the parents...
and you guys can relax and have fun meeting other Browncoats and enjoying the very exciting BDM!

Have fun!

The cut I saw I think should be an 18 or at least a 15 but I think the laws are getting a bit less strict over here. Now that the 12A has been introduced that means that any age can see a 12 so I really hope it gets a 15, as much as I want the movie to do well. Though I have heard it's been toned down a bit from the cut I saw.
