... Has a decision been made? I realise I could maybe check out the trailer credits but I'm avoiding seeing to much of the film beforehand.

I saw the trailer today since I can't make the screening May 5th, and the composer is...David Newman, I think. It's not Greg Edmundson from the series.
Not seein' the trailer, huh? I wasn't going to either, but...

Hmmm...my hearts beatin' regular again. Only took a half hour for that to happen.

I must have missed the news on David Newman being chosen as composer, but hey cool! Hey did the score for Frankenweenie!

The conclusion is that Greg Edmonson is the best guy for the job, but Joss still can't hire him.

how come? was it scheduling conflicts or something?

i just hope the final movie's music has the same feel as the series. it was one of the unique things i liked about the show.

This is the one thing about the BDM that worries me at this point. "Star Wars" is going to have it's usual great John Williams score. "Serenity", who knows what we're going to end up with? It seems like it (the score only, not the whole movie) is being thrown together at the last minute by some unknown (to me, anyway), unproven composer. I'm just hoping that we don't end up with a really great movie with a crappy score. I really wish Universal had just let Joss hire Greg. Then this wouldn't be an issue.

EDIT: Names I would have liked to have seen as composer for this film:

Greg Edmondson - obviously.

Danny Elfman - probably the next best composer in Hollywood after Williams.

Chris Beck - He did great work on Buffy and had movie experience ("Under the Tuscan Sun") too, which was what Greg was lacking.

I guess, at this point, I just have to hope that the score we end up with is good enough that it doesn't DETRACT from the movie.

Am I being too pessimistic?

Well, I went to the May 5th screening. I won't spoilerify here - all I'll say is that there WAS some of the 'real' music, and it brought tears to my eyes, because THERE was my Firefly, on the big screen, with the RIGHT MUSIC.

So stop worrying - it'll bring tears to your eyes, too, when you hear it!

That's somewhat of a relief. I had heard that most of the music for the screenings (I didn't get to go, obviously) was just temporary stuff recycled from other movies. I think that's what has me worried - that so much was unfinished this late in the game.

Also, I read Newman's bio on imDb and, while he's done a ton of movie scores, I don't remember any of them being memorable - is that redundant?

But your reassuring words have somewhat reassured me (definitely redundant).

David Newman is far from unknown and unproven. First of all, it's in his blood. His father, Alfred Newman (How the West was Won, South Pacific, the trumpet motif for 20th Century Fox), was a legend and 9-time Oscar winner. His 2 siblings are composers (6 time oscar nominee Thomas Newman--Finding Nemo), his cousin is a composer (oscar winner Randy Newman--Monsters, Inc), his uncles are composers (and worked as musical directors, conductors, etc for big movies like Star Wars). So he is as well known as it gets in the industry as a member of a very talented film music dynasty.

As far as proving himself, he has delivered a lot of solid scores for 80+ motion pictures, including The Phantom, Operation Dumbo Drop, and *Galaxy Quest*. He tends to get more pedestrian comedy films, but sometimes gets to stand out with some amazing music for even cheesy scenes. For example, Anastasia (the cartoon with Meg Ryan and John Cusack for which he got an oscar nomination) and Bowfinger (the Fedex scene music brought tears to my eyes).

My first choice was Greg Edmonson too. But I have full confidence that David Newman can deliver as well. In fact, I am hoping Serenity will be his long overdue Oscar win!

As far as time goes, 5 months is plenty of time. Composers always get to work last, for obvious reasons. They need to wait until the film has been edited and such so they know which scenes survived and what they are composing for. Many composers only get a couple of months. Sometimes, they get only a couple of weeks (John Ottman for Usual Suspects)! Granted it is better for a composer to be brought in from the beginning so they have a longer time to be "inspired" by the material. But plenty of good scores are done by replacement composers or even score doctors at the last minute (e.g. Carter Burwell for Mercury Rising)

David Newman will be fine. Trust Joss to take good care of his baby.

There was a bit of recycled music in the screenings. I remember hearing a track to '5th Element' at one time and it actually fit in pretty well. I always felt that 5th Element had some excellent music that was both original and fit with the motif of the film. I just hope Serenity is blessed with a similiarly suited soundtrack.

Of course, if you're crying, you can't see the movie, which would definitely detract. It's a fine line.

Ha, Ha. Good point. But at least something like that would be memorable. My "problem", if you want to call it that, with Mr. Newman is that I don't "hear" music in my head when you say his name. I'm sure the guy is a more than competent composer. However, when you say, John Williams, my mind starts playing the "Star Wars" and "Superman" themes. When you say Danny Elfman, I "hear" the "Batman" movie theme (and oddly enough, the theme to Sledge Hammer). If, ten years from now, you say the name, David Newman, and my mind starts playing themes from "Serenity", I'll consider the score to be a success. That may sound like a lot to ask for, but I really just want a score that matches the quality of the movie - in other words, Incredible! But also original and different than anything that's been done before - like the original Firefly soundtrack. Does that seem right to you?
