Honestly - not to offend anyone - but shouldn't we all just be incredibly grateful that there is a movie, comics, books, and toys coming out based on Firefly/Serenity? If we start complaining to the companies putting this stuff out before it's even released, doesn't that just make us look thankless and petty?

Hi everybody --

I've been a site member for awhile, just started getting involved in the forums.

Anyway, I looked at those pictures and the action figures are indeed quite ugly -- so ugly that it's kinda hilarious... until you wonder how many people would actually buy "action figures" of such idiotic-looking guys. Whatever happened to Mal's chin? Count me in.

Sure, they're not THAT ugly, I suppose. But the technology and skill exists to make figures that look EXACTLY like the actors.

And the better the figures look, the better the chances are that people will buy them. And the more people that buy them, the better the chance that the NEXT wave of Firefly figures will have Book or River or Kaylee or Wash, etc... and maybe, if we're lucky, we can get a whole crew on our bookshelves.

And I'd like that very much.

Geez, if you're going to ask them to fix the heads, ask them to make Mal's pants tighter while they're at it.

Actually, to me it appears both figures use the same head -- one just has a mustache painted on. These could well be prototypes that will be changed later.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw them. International Toyfair, where they show these to potential buyers to get them into stores, was in February, and these look like they're not-quite-complete to me (note the lack of articulation on anything but the arms).

I'm a sculptor so I have a lot of sympathy for the people who make toys. These look rushed to me and I'll be- and I hope- they don't reflect the final toys.

And yes, Jayne totally looks like Joss in one of those pictures.

In other words, "Hi! I know nothing about the toy industry or how toys get made!"
What you saw are prototypes. When original sculpts are made for toy production the sculptor also has to factor in for shrinkage in production (since hot plastic shrinks when it cools) so often proto sculpts might look a bit odd but the finished production toy looks great.
The studio that did these sculpts has a TON of experience and their portaits are some of the best in the toy industry. They know what they are doing so don't ry to take credit when the toys come out and they look better than the prototype pictures they showed.

That doesn't guarantee that the final product will look right - I can point to at least 6 MCFarlane toys products that came out much worse than the prototypes, barely resembling what they purported to portray. Fortunately, their more recent products have greatly improved in quality, IMO.

At least with this petition, the manufacturer will know that there are people who care about the quality (and are presumably willing to pay more for higher quality). If you speak up, and it's unnecessary, then no harm is done (presuming you remain civil) - if you stay silent, you deserve what you get.

Respectfully,
-Matt P.

I've been lurking for a while now, just registered the other day, so pardon for this being my VERY FIRST post...

But those things look like were built out of reject parts from the He-Man figure pile! You can only tell it's Mal because of the coat!

This isn't the first time they've done a horrible rendering on a real person...but this time I actually give a damn.

Thanks for all the support. We're up over 100 signatures.

I got this from Diamond today:

Hey Greg,

At Diamond Select Toys, we are fully committed to delivering amazing products with the best possible likenesses. The "Serenity" figures currently seen online and in print catalogues represent the very beginning of our production process. The journey from hand-painted resin prototypes to mass-produced plastic action figures is a long one with a great number of changes made before finally reaching consumers. When working with a major motion picture release, the production timetable is set in stone and cannot be altered. This means that pictures of prototypes, catalogue listings, press releases, factory quotes, etc have to be completed with no time left for round after round of sculpt and paint revisions. Those revisions will still occur, but will be completed during the production phase of development rather than the concept phase. Once updated samples are available, we will bring you the latest images and news.

To have it fixed or not, I'm still buying them! Lol. I mean, if these figs don't do well, they'll never make more, mostly better ones like Buffy/Angel. Let the petition stay. At least then they'll know that we know it kinda looks bad.

Also, I'm just content on getting the Serenity Comic in July. I REALLY didn't think it would exculate past Trading cards to an RPG game AND figurines. Now if they have posters, I'll be in heaven *__*

I agree. I had posted on another thread here (can't find it now) that I'd like to see 3 3/4" figures and an accompanying ship playset (for display purposes of course). But in today's market of over detailed, over articutalted "action" figures, I don't see that happening soo.... in lieu of that, I'd like to see a Micromachine Firefly along the lines of the Star Wars Action Fleet series.

CaptBaggytrousers, I sent an email to Hasbro that you might be interested in:

Dear Safe@2nd,

Thank you for contacting us regarding the Micro Machines Action Fleet Line.
We appreciate your interest in our products.

Presently we have no plans in the near future of releasing any new Micro Machines.
I shall gladly share your interest with the appropriate department to share your comments for future consideration.

Thank you,

Hi, I was wondering, like many others, if you plan to resurrect the Micro Machine Action Fleet line for any of the new space movies specifically the new Serenity movie. This movie has a HUGE fan following that would eagerly snap up anything to do with the movie or preceeding series, Firefly created by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel fame. See the following website for info www.fireflyfans.net. And here http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=too

.
Thank-you for your time,
Safe@2nd.

You know what they say, "squeaky wheel gets the grease". Here's where if enough interested people email, it may change their minds and may see a miniture Serenity complete with mini people perfect size for the top a CPU.....
