...and aren't all hung up on a certain point that most at the UB's seem to be stuck on, I thought I would point out something.

(Forgive me if this has already been brought up)

Joss Whedon loves to foreshadow events in his TV shows. It is pretty much a given that he would have killed off at least one of the crew members/passengers at some point. I propose that he eluded to Book's death in 'The Message', when Jayne and he are working out after listening to Tracey's recording. From the shooting script:

BOOK
Makes sense. Looking to feel alive,
I would venture.

JAYNE
For psychology, that don't sound half dumb.
My kind of life don't last, preacher.
So I expect I'm invested in making
good sport of it whilst I can...
You gonna read over me when I'm taken
down, Shepherd?

BOOK
Oh, I suspect you'll be around long
after we're all --

I think it would have been logical to kill off Book first since his past could've been worked into a story arc of some sort that the crew had to unravel. It is my hope that the sequel features Book's past in a manner that will allow Ron Glass to make some sort of reappearance, whether through flashback, recording, or prequel.

Anyone else feel like commenting on this topic?

You make very good points. Some have speculated that the Operative is telling Book's story.

I think it's more likely that he was a fairly high government official and maybe war hero who became disillusioned with the Alliance after the war. Maybe he was the one behind the big experiment from the movie...?

I'm sure when S2 comes out we'll see Book again!

AND and and
I think Alan might be back too...
cloned brothers?
oh, come on...can't you just imagine?

Joss can do a lot of sci-fi stuff even without resorting to Aliens...

Exactly! Serenity could sure use a WashBot! ..and with Kaylee being a genius mechanic and all...

I have a real issue with this whole 'cloning' idea that people have been throwing around out there. I think the majority fail to realize that a clone, while identical in physical composition, does not possess the same personality, memories, or experiences of the original subject.

I have heard suggestions that they could clone Wash and then 'download' his personality into the new body. This is silly because even if they were able to somehow make a physical/electronic copy of a person's brain, why in god's name would Wash have this procedure done to himself?

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and all, but short of his shadow puppet mastery and weird geese fetish, what real value does his mind possess that would motivate him [or others, for that matter] to bother with saving the knowledge stored therein. In reality, of all the crew, only River seems gifted enough to have this hypothetical procedure done to her.

Now with Book, on the other hand, I can totally see having sometime in his past made an electronic duplicate of himself. Sort of like the doctor who 'committed suicide' in "I Robot". I have no problem envisioning the crew running across this recording and interfacing with Ron Glass directly once again.

Finally, I would hate for Joss to trivialize death in Serenity like he seemed to do in BtVS. No offense, but I can only see Buffy die and be resurrected so many times before I start to lose interest in the matter entirely.

He came close to making the same mistake in the Firefly series by having all the crew members/passengers be shot, stabbed, or otherwise injured, only to be saved at the last minute and make a full recovery. Hell, he both lopped of Mal's ear and killed his character in the same episode, but at the end of the 40 minutes, had him whole again and cracking jokes.

I like to think that the deaths in Serenity actually meant something and will have a lasting affect. If not, then when I see Simon sacrifice his life to protect River/Kaylee (when it happens in Serenity 2, feel free to direct your rage at me...Joss hates happy couples), I won't be nearly as impressed since they can just wave their hands in the air and bring him back good as new.

LOL
Actually in my imagination Wash's parents had had clones made (several sons) and the one we have met (our Wash) was the dud of the family...
in Serenity 2 we meet the perfect clone, a brilliant & brave perfect man, and Zoe hates him with a burning passion just because he isn't her Wash.

But actually I agree with you, I do think that the characters' deaths should mean something -
it shouldn't be possible to just have them return like a do-over...like on Buffy.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you pitched this to Joss right now, he'd grin, sigh.. and grin again.

Can you imagine bringing the audience in from the emotional rollercoaster ride that is the first movie to a movie where they'd cloned him in the 2nd? It would just be... you know. No. This isn't Star Wars. Let's not sugar coat the issue. Wash is dead. His story is over.

Now we get to see Zoe dealing without Wash - her human emotional tie to the world. She has a new character plot arc if a second movie happens. Will she suddenly snap mid movie and shoot River? It could happen if she doesn't cope with grief.

Book, on the other hand... he's a mystery. There's a lot of story waiting for him. I'm pretty certain we haven't seen the last of Ron.
