Firefly episodes on the big screen

Someone mentioned that they would glady pay to see the Firefly pilot or other episodes on the big screen to build up support for the movie. I know a place that might be able to do it. The Alamo Draft House in texas. It has 4 theaters in Austin Texas and 1 in San Antonio and Houston. They often show TV shows, odd-ball cult classics, and customer requests.

I know there are plenty of fans in Texas since the Dallas and Austin pre-screenings for Serenity sold out. I think if enough people asked, the Draft House would be happy to show Firefly. They often have "Movie Festivals" where they show many related shows in a day. They could posibly show the whole season.

The problem I think is, according to the FBI warnings you can't use them for anything but home use. Do you think Fox will allow such a thing?

If you live near any of the theaters in Texas, please request that they show the Firefly episodes before September. I think it would increase interest in Serenity.

I forgot to mention the Draft House servers beer/drinks and food during the movies. So an all day screening would be no problem.

I just realialized that even if you can't show the DVD for profit, is it OK to show it in a theater for free? You can rent a Draft House theater and they will show whatever you want. If enough people were willing to chip in and pay for the theater and then get 150+ people to fill it up, might be a fun day.

This is a good question. There's a local theater here in Massachusetts which has played- and will play again this month- Buffy episodes "Once More with Feeling" and "Hush." However, these shows were free to the public. They did sell goodie bags of props for the audience to use (including a parking ticket for poor girl Marti Noxon, a rubber monster for "Grr. Argh." paper flames for "Walk Through the Fire," etc.)

I'll bet the "free" part is what makes it permissible; it also makes it perhaps unappealing for a theater.

Since Draft House sells food and drinks, filling a theater with 150 people would be good for selling food. Not a total loss if you don't charge for the show.

Alamo Drafthouse in Austin showed "Hush" and "Once More with Feeling" (why are those two getting coupled together?) and charged for it.

It was a great time, it was primarily a sing-along and there was a contest and some props to do things at certain times (like light a cigarette lighter during "Walk Though the Fire"). But as we were waiting to go in we were discussing how it was they could this. Did they pay 20th Century Fox for the rights to have a public showing and charge admission? We doubted it. But we had fun that night.

I think if you contact Fox they're generally okay. Some UK browncoats had a Shindig over here and Fox said it was fine to charge as long as the only cost was to cover the hire of the venue and no profit was being made.

They even sent some stuff over for a raffle. Scripts and signed box sets, that kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure it's still a violation (all the FBI warnings at the beginning of DVDs say so "even if displayed for no charge") but maybe since it's free (except for the popcorn) the copyright owners let it slide...

Part of that whole thinig too is the technicalitys surouding 'public' and 'private'. if you purchase a video/dvd/what have you, acording to the published warnings youare prohibited from any public showing (more or less). however 'private' showings are still ok. Say you're part of the shriners and have a showing that only shriners can come to, that would be private and thus ok. so it mostly, and some what sadly, come down to the symantics of the actual laws. And if anyone actualy feels it's worth it to through a fuss.

Hush and OMWF were coupled together because a) Hush was the only episode without words (for more of the ep) and b) OMWF was the only ep with singing for most of the ep. They went from one extreme to the other, with OMWF being inspired by Hush's silence.

There are two ways to go about (possibly) gettting the episodes played at the Alomo Drafthouse. One is to rent the theater for a private party. This has been discussed a few times (I don't remember on which board) and would allow us to show the episodes since it be a "private" party. The down side is that it would probably be expensive.

The second option is to get the theater do do a marathon (like their upcoming Freaks and Geeks marathon in June). If enough support is shown for this idea, they would probably do it, but I doubt we would be able to set the date as it would be organized by the theater and fit into their calandar. If you are interested in trying to get the Alamo to show the episodes send an email to:

I had a teacher who showed movies like "Tombstone" in his class on Fridays with his LCD projector.

It wasn't quite as impressive as a theater, but a ten-foot-wide image is still better than any TV set!

These were two major milestone type episodes, and i think were both Emmy noms and/or winners, so that's likely the reason for pairing.

America loves a winner!

A GREAT place to watch Firefly on a big screen would be at one of the oldest and most famous movie theatre's in the deep South, if not the entire country. Located in Atlanta, GA, right down there on Peachtree Street, this historic land mark has been the site for concerts, stage productions and famous comedy acts. There IS one small catch, howerver that might make folks a bit uneasy to attend...it's The Fabulous FOX Theatre

Actually, if you're in Austin TX, you can come to SpiderHouse ( www.spiderhousecafe.com) and watch the Firefly episodes every Tuesday night (projected onto a semi-big screen). It takes place outside in the back yard, it's free, and I'm the person who shows them there, so email me if you have questions. We'll be showin'em all summer long!
