Try flushing your browser's cache. Know how to do that?

It may be that Jewel's site is not date-stamped, or not properly date-stamped. And/Or if you have your browser's settings configured to download new content only if it's newer than the objects in your cache, then it may be skipping the download in order to 'speed up your browsing experience.'

Flushing your cache will force the browser to fully reload the page, which should fix your problem.

If you have Internet Explorer:
Go to 'Tools' on your menu bar, then select 'Internet Options'. This will open a dialog box titled 'Internet Options'. In the middle of the box is a section labeled 'Temporary Internet Files'. Click on the 'Delete Files...' button in this section. Another dialog will open to confirm this action. Click on the button labeled 'Okay'. (NB: If you don't have any websites or pages that you have marked for synchronization or saved for offline viewing, it's 'best practice' to also select the 'Delete all offline content' checkbox.)

You'll see some activity (perhaps for a longish time, if your cache is really full) and then be back at the previous 'Internet Options' dialog box. From here, go to the last section, labeled 'History' and click the 'Clear History' button. (NB: Again, this is not strictly necessary, but is best practice unless you routinely use the auto-complete feature when manually entering URLs in the address bar.) Another confirmation dialog will pop up; select 'OK'. More activity, and then you're back at the previous dialog. Click on the button labeled 'OK' -- located at the bottom of the box -- to dismiss the Internet Tools dialog box.

Now try reloading the link, and it should work.

Most people still use IE, so that's why I gave the step-by-step for that browser. If you use Firefox like me, then you are probably savvy enough to know how to flush the cache on your own...

All kidding aside, if you use Firefox and don't know how to clear the cache, write back and I'll tell you; but it's pretty much the same sequence, just slightly different labels.

If this still doesn't get you the newer page: Are you by any chance on AOL or one of the new 'high-speed' dialup accounts? If so, your problem may be that your ISP's webcache servers are out of date. Your service is faster because they cache frequently accessed pages and then serve them to you directly, negating the slow down as your request/response is routed around the Internet (maybe around the world). The downside: You may have trouble getting fresh content. You know, like you are having trouble getting fresh content. To fix this, get a T1 Internet connection set up in your home. Just call the telephone company and they'll send you a brochure (and your very own salesman!) to quote you a price.

...Or you could just get a cable or DSL internet connection...

I guess part of the reason I'm writing is because today I received this wonderful message from Joss Whedon, on my cell phone. He sounded really gleeful, which isn't terribly normal for Joss. He doesn't act extremely excited unless it's worth it.. and he just sounded so happy, and so positive. People on the Firefly/Serenity message boards are still chattering about my weight. I don't look skinnier. Just older. Because I am. And since I'm in my twenties, it's hard for me to keep weight on. I feel happy though, and healthy. When I'm hungry I eat, and when I'm full I stop. It's a perfect existance. The only times I go overboard is if there are cheeseburgers around, and the only times I go under-board is when there's corn or Thai food around. I hate corn and I hate Thai food. Hate. Passionately. But no, they're not adding weight to me in CGI, and no, Joss isn't force-feeding me every day at the craft service table. Kaylee will look like Jewel (unfortunately? fortunately?) because that's who's playing her. Thank God.

hey there,

thanks so much for your response. very nice of you to take the time to send details.

i do empty my temp internet files & history (& cookies) on a regualr basis. i tried it just now and it didn't solve the problem. i did go to the site through internet explorere (yep, i'm on aol - so i can i.m. with my folks) and it did show up. so it must be a timing thing with aol. thanks for the heads up. i at least know to watch for that kind of stuff now.

Okay, so I'll keep my opinions on AOL to myself (EDIT from further down the page: Oops. Couldn't do it, sorry). If you ever read, surf or watch tech information products, you probably already know what the experts think of it; my opinion and their's coincide. It's that damned Buddy List that keeps you hooked, right?
(NB: Incidentally, you did know you can use AIM without being an AOL subscriber, right?)

Still, I'm interested in some other aspects of this little mystery, if you don't mind answering a couple questions.

First: Do AOL provide you with an 'AOL Browser'? Or do they simply tell you to get IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.? IF they do give you a specific browser, is it based on IE, Mozilla, ...?

Second: You said you cleared your cache and it didn't work. Then you tried the site with IE and it did work. That was all in the same post, so I assume only a small amount of time elapsed between 'it didn't work' and 'it worked'. That's why I'm interested in whether AOL provide a separate browser from your (I'm guessing, here) Windows-standard Internet Explorer installation (meaning you didn't choose to install IE, but it's on your computer anyway).

As a final note while waiting for your responses: I've got a couple friends who are AOL subscribers. They're either elderly thenselves or have elderly relatives who are too settled in their ways to change, with whom they must stay in contact. One of these is a close associate who is only 56, has no elderly family as an excuse, and who recently got off the dial-up in favor of broadband cable (I even helped him install a wireless LAN in his home).

He still pays $9.95 (plus applicable federal, state, and local taxes, fees and slush money) for AOL to go on top. "Why, for the love of God, why?!" I ask him. "Because they provide the Internet," sez he...

I go outside and regard the simple beauty of a fallen leaf, watching the birds in flight across the dusty sky, until my heart rate drops back to normal. Then I go back inside and calmly ask him what he means by, "they provide the Internet." He sez, "Well, the cable just gives me a connection to AOL, like my phone line used to do. AOL gives me the Internet."

After I (sort of) calmly explain that having a cable connection means not having to pay anything else for access to the Internet, he gives me this dubious look; 'cause he really doesn't believe me and he just doesn't want to be rude (since I've just installed a wireless router and configured six wireless workstations around his house and set them up for a fair shot at impenetrability from the CIA). He's pretty sure I don't know what I'm talking about; but he's being polite.

That AOL must have a 'Need Help?' system that Goebbels would have been proud of...

hey zoid,

believe me, i understand what "the educated" think of aol. i keep it for a couple reasons, but most importantly because of the comfort level my folks (76 & 74) have with it. we "talk" daily on line, play games together, etc. i also met my finace on aol, for which it will always hold a place in my heart. i can see how some might take offense to what they consider to be propaganda of the big machine, but it works for us.

as far as my system goes, it is a 2004 dell pc running xp. the internet explorer version is 6.0. my access is through a comcast cable modum. i don't use their interface at all.

i do access the internet directly through microsoft's internet explorer somtimes. and to answer your question about the timing of my test....it was immediatly after trying to get to the new message. in fact, i copied and pasted the web address from aol to i.e., so it was only a couple seconds. (just checked again through aol & i did get the page with the new mesage from jewel....)

as far as which browser aol uses, i think it is i.e. i do not recall down loading any other browser, but it could have put it there without me knowing.

let me know if you have any other questions, and what you think the problem might be. i'd love to know what you think it is.

Some ISP has been known to proxy cache your requests. For instance, for very large ISPs (like AOL) - even some large corporations's internal IT, it saves them a lot of traffic if they cache some of the more *popular* websites and let you fetch from their cache. It all works very transparently, so on your end you wouldn't really notice it at all...

But then 3 days or so is quite a long time to cache things - I doubt that they cache anything for that long.

That always the Director's version of the story though - but given his history, it might very well be true. For most films, the last month of two of pre-screening comes back with the results of the audiences' reactions to different parts of the movies, and the marketing people's analysis and feedback. Taken all of this together, they might do some fine tuning, or they might decide to recut the ending or change the story around... If you are interested in more about how this process works, I would definitely suggest picking up Terry Gilliam's "The battle of Brazil" on how the studio exercised a small clause in their contract, took the film away from him and recut it into a love story - complete with different scoring and different sequences - pretty much murdered the movie. Terry didn't lose though, he took his cut and started showing it at film schools and invited reviewers... Well... you can read about the rest of it if you are interested... It is definitely a interesting bit.

The problem with IE in general when it comes to flushing the cache is that you may think you're totally clearing the cache by using the Tools/Internet Options dialog; but, in fact you're not.

IE maintains about a gozillion separate caches with hidden and system properties. Even after you've gone thru the process enumerated above, you can still locate all kinds of graphics, histories, cookies, etc. in these hidden caches. Problem is, if you delete them you can cause your Windows installation to fail, requiring a reinstall of the OS. While that's not necessarily catastrophic if you've got your data files on a separate partition/hard disk, it's still a pain reinstalling all your other software after the OS redo. In fact, I routinely reformat and reinstall Windows (about every six months) just to eliminate all the detritus, both on the hard drive and in the registry.

The only sure way to get rid of all IE's hoarded data files is by utilizing 3rd party software designed for that purpose. CleanSweep and Norton Tools are popular sellers (though I don't use 'em).

One last thing on IE: Microsoft offer free classes on customizing the behavior of IE. I've attended a few. There's a lot more available than just title bars and 'loading logos'. (NB: In fact, it is possible to alter IE's code maliciously from the Internet, by a number of different methods.) If AOL has a partnered browser based on IE, there could be a lot of internal workings different than a standard install, and the casual user would never be able to detect it. Not saying there is a lot different, just saying is all...

Final note: I still have IE installed on my computer, primarily because I want the operating system to work correctly. Removing IE from a Windows computer may cause undesirable behavior. I run Windows because I like to play a wide variety of cutting edge games; other platforms offer neither the quantity nor the quality in games.

But I never run IE; in fact I don't allow the browser to use my router to access the Internet. Too many holes. I use Firefox. And even at that I've managed to trap a couple of Java-based trojans (face it, there's no such thing as safe, only smart). When I want true Internet security, I boot from my Kill-Bill Linux CD-R and unmount all my HD's before enabling my cable. The Kill-Bill ISO is a free download; google it or go to g4tv's archives of Kevin Rose's Dark Tips and search on Kill-Bill.

As to the problem with AOL displaying an old page even after a complete reload has been forced by perfunctory cache flush, I'm buggered if I know. I'd tend to bet that it's an old page on AOL's web cache servers; but I ain't ruling out monkey business in the browser, either. I wish any AOL users who are suffering this problem good luck.

Just remember that there's a real Internet out there, unfiltered by Big Brother AOL, should you ever start to chafe at the continuous oversight of your browsing habits...
