Greetings, ma famille:

Okay, so we know the Alliance is supposedly a merger of the USA and China. Joss told us so. But what about that other mysterious entity, BlueSun? Joss never specifically mentioned its root in today's cultures. I've read people's conjectures that BlueSun was a merger of IBM and Sun Microsystems, or even a 'biodiesel' manufacturer of the same name which exists today. But, I got to thinking (dangerous, I know) and got the idea that perhaps BlueSun is the consumer products superpower, Japan.

First off, the BlueSun commercials we see on vidscreens on Ariel, on the outside of the space station, etc. are very reminiscent in style to Japanese television commercials. Pretty young girl pops something bite-sized into her mouth, or takes a swig of soda, then smiles into camera. Distinctly Japanese.

Second, Japan is known as The Land of the Rising Sun. The national flag still sports the red ball 'sun' symbol (without the rays of the WWII flag). Is it too much of a stretch to suspect that the 'red sun' of today's Japan has simply been replaced by the 'blue sun' of whatever system Firefly/Serenity inhabits 500 years hence?

We know the market dominance Sony, Toshiba, Kawasaki, Honda, et al are establishing in our world today. I don't think it's too farfetched to extend that influence to total world market domination. The Japanese have the mission and the will to do so. Americans seem perfectly willing to allow them to make all of our consumer electronics and a growing share of our autos.

500 years from now, the remnants of China and the US may be the political powers from the standpoint of manpower/population density and military might; but, will BlueSun Japan be the economic power behind the throne?

Thoughtfully,

zoid
