You know, speaking of HITCHIKER'S, to tell you the truth, in retrospect, I was glad that they moved SERENITY from its April release. Because looking back, if it had debued then, it probably would've petered out.

Everyone in the industry has been making a big deal about how for like the past 16 weeks or so, the overall gross and attendance was down cosiderably for the last year. Personally, I think it's stupid that they even worry about this stuff, because nothing could've topped last years incredible run, what with PASSION OF THE CHRIST, SHREK and SPIDER-MAN 2. But there's no sense in releasing something that's supposed to go off like a bombshell if very few were around to see it.

And if you want further evidence that it was all about timing, look at HITCHIKER'S. That flick pretty much had the same thing going for it (cult sci-fi comedy with huge following. Maybe even bigger than ours, since it's been around for twenty plus years, whereas we've only been around for three) Came out a week later than when SERENITY was supposed to be released. And while it did loads better than that XXX sequel (which I think it tanked because no one gave a shit about it), it's pretty much topped out at $50 million. It made back it's budget, but you can't categorize it as a blockbuster, can you?

Timing is key. And coming out late Sept, early Oct is a smart move. Whe it makes MATRIX money and the sequels are greenlit (hoepfully not to be filmed at the same time. You don't want to bleed it dry like they did with RELOADED/REVOLUTIONS), THEN they'll get the sweet summer or winter openings that all the big blockbuster's get.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

Though as someone said changing all the merchandise is gonna be a pain - but we've already done it once, so we should be pros by now! *still has many many things that say April 22nd* Just hang tight - Universal is here to take care of us, they won't let us down!

Now here's a thought (okay, so maybe it's more of a fantasy ): What if they were to premiere the movie *at* DragonCon? Of course, the con would be in utter chaos and no one would be able to get in...

On second thought...Universal, please disregard what I just said! Not on Labor Day weekend, please!!

In regard to test screenings... these can be people that the studio brings in to see a screening and usually is carefully demographic-ed or whatever-you-call-it. I doubt they're happening on the same nights as the advanced screenings. Who knows.

Someone said somewhere that advanced screenings counted towards the opening numbers of the film. Is that true?

I'll certainly go see this movie multiple times whenever it hits theatres, and I'm looking forward to the screening on the 23rd.

They didn't keep it or didn't show it on all showings then, cause wasn't there when a friend and fellow browncoat saw HG2TG a week after opening.

Then again, since I haven't seen every movie at every theatre I did perhaps speak a bit too widely- it was based on my calling all the theatres in the area (even Sedgefield) and being told they didn't have the trailer/ haven't shown the trailer for Serenity.

edit----

don't mean to imply I doubt your word Static, I believe you guys saw it - just trying to point out that many others in Gso did not see it and the theatre staff themselves don't seem to know they have the trailer....

While the movie is on thier minds late Sept will be great for Joss not as great for us to wait. I would like to see Joss accepting an Oscar for a show that was cancelled.

They were doing some (generally unannounced) test screenings as early as late last year. IIRC, a few browncoats did get into those because someone 'on the inside' told them about it. Largely those were standard movie test screening audiences, though, picked at pseudo-random (possibly with some demographic weightings) from local malls, plazas, tourist traps, etc. in the LA area...

Let’s all take a breath of fresh air, here.

What Static has done, by way of contacting the distributor’s representative, is a cool move which reflects well on Browncoats and is a positive step toward fuelling the hype required to make the BDM a big damn success. Given, as I understand it, that Static was enquiring about a specific showing at a specific theatre, and received gushing tributes from the distributor’s rep suggesting they sure wished they had released Serenity straightaway, bodes well for the confidence in their product. So, good news for us fans.

But that guy’s job is to facilitate the hype. He’s not going to say that Serenity sucks. He knows that any hype is good hype. And he knows that pre-sold fans such as us aren’t likely to allow a little resentment over vague promises regarding earlier release dates keep us from paying to see the BDM when it finally does hit the screens.

Release dates shift all the time, for various reasons. Studios commonly delay releases for financial (ran out of bucks, or cost over-runs) and marketing (don’t want to open up against Star Wars) reasons. Yes, sometimes release dates are pushed forward, but this is almost always to fill a market niche before a similar movie is released by a competitor. (In which case things get a might exciting for us post-prod types… but I digress).

Here’s when the release dates are locked in: when the distributors commit to their advertisers. When the ads come out in Variety or on trailers, and say something like, oh, “September 30th”, you can bet yer ass that heaven and earth shall be moved, if necessary, to make that date. Which is to say: the working grunts involved in manufacturing the film (or digital) product will be whipped into whatever frenzy is necessary to meet the delivery by that deadline. By the same token, that date will be held to, marketing-fuelled pre-screenings aside, even if the product (film) has long been fully assembled.

Well now, seems the studios have made their advertising commitment by way of the Serenity trailer, and it says “September 30th”.

I’d be ecstatic if I were wrong on this one.

Relax: it’s a helluva movie. Worth the wait.

I'd like to thank Haken (or was it you, Shiny) for putting this thread in the news headlines section. In an effort to do something besides read Fireflyfans.net, I've become selective in what threads I open. Since I haven't seen the BDM, I avoid movie spoilers, & as one might expect, I skip thread titles that don't interest me. But that doesn't save me enough time, so I also avoid threads with titles that are non-descriptive, or all caps, or use multiple exclamation points or question marks. This thread fails all three tests, so I passed on it.

But it is News.

The first screening was so inundated with fans that the testers realized it was useless, prompting the second screening.

Reckon I don't go to those places 'cause the only place I've ever seen 'em is a particular few cinemas (these days, only multiplexes). These test screenings are not anonymous. Each of the folks giving away passes will have a 1-sheet with title, maybe a still, familiar names (if any), & brief synopsis. And test screeners are now also recruited via email listserve. This may have been how the first test of Serenity got swamped by fans. For it to have been due to a leak, the leak would've had to come from the testers, since you have to call with a code-key to get your name on the admission list. And the testers don't like such leaks, 'cause they waste time & money.

"It's working out as well as "Star Wars" and if we'd started in May, it would have run all summer."
-----

As pretty as that sounds, I'm not buying it.
Star Wars would have knocked Serenity out of the theatres.
You do realize that when it opened, multiplexes were showing pretty much NOTHING but Star Wars?
12 and 16 plexes had Star Wars on every screen.
If they'd started in May, the BDM would be off the screens starting on Star Wars's opening day: buried, completely.
Look, I love me some Firefly and I'm hot for Serenity...but I'm realistic enough to know that it would have been blown away by the Star Wars juggernaut.
The good folks at Universal aren't stupid.
They knew what they were up against, and even though they have faith in the BDM, they weren't crazy enough to release Serenity anywhere NEAR Star Wars.
That's my humble opinion.

I can vouch for the fact that there's a lot of local interest in Serenity! I've got four grad school friends who either live in Raleigh or within an hour of it - one of whom turned me on to Firefly to begin with - and all of them have heard about the Big Damn Premiere plans and want to know the minute tickets go on sale.

I've watched a lot of movies at Mission Valley, and they'd better have this movie in their biggest theatre on opening night / midnight, that's all I'm saying.

Saw Batman Begins last night at the Carmike and it did have the Serenity trailer: so apologies to Static on that subject!

unfortunately it was like the 5th or 6th trailer after about 5 commercials and really did not get any positive responses from a half full auditorium- the most common I heard was "what the f**K is that supposed to be?"

I still feel that Universal needs to do more promotion other than fueling our grassroots guerilla marketing campaign in order for Serenity to take off properly tho

Y'all do realize that Uni has a Marketing Department and they have a schedule to begin marketing this movie that they paid more than a little bit of money for, no?
I mean, we don't even know the release schedule yet. They might be planning an initial limited release. Some cities might not get the BDM until figures come in to proove that a wider release is warranted.
(Here in Vegas, we didn't get "Crouching Tiger"--at the one theatre that ran it--until after the Oscar nominations came out. We didn't get "Chicago" on Christmas Day...we got it a few weeks later.)
Starting a promo campagain too early can be almost as bad as starting it too late.
Me? I'm looking for BDStars showing up on chat shows, E!, entertainment segments on news shows.
Would be nice to see Joss show up on the Early Show or (gak) the Today Show, talking about how he got a canceled TV show--with a rabid fan base--made into a major motion picture.
The promotion machine is just starting to run, people.
Have patience...and remember: Next week, September 30th will only be 3 months away!

Absolutely!

All of my comments were/are aimed at the premise of a release date of 6 weeks away - which is unconfirmed.

For a release in late Sept we've got plenty of time- for a release in July - the promos better start rolling out ASAP and perhaps a re-edited trailer for the un initiated....

And that was supposed to help us feel less forlorn and forsaken?!? On the other hand, remember that July 29th is only one month after the release of Spielberg's "The War of the Worlds" premiere.

VU have been doing promotions for Serenity since at least 5 May, by means of insane word of mouth regarding preview screenings. Throwing the promo machine into high gear a little earlier than expected could work out just fine, and be rewarded by Summer attendance figures. Let's face it: There's not much left this Summer season to look forward to/fear.

With the exception of WotW (Spielberg and Cruise, again?! Like the reunification of East and West Germany, I'm not so sure about the wisdom of this plan) and 'Chaz and His Fudge Factory' (Burton and Depp are the antithesis of Spielberg/Cruise) there doesn't seem to be any blockbusters lining the lists. If Serenity were a run-of-the-mill first-time director's flick, I'd say leave it 'til September. But the buzz is insane, and at some point, you've got to capitalize before it wanes.

I saw the first TV spot for WotW like 10 days ago and it opens in 11 more days. (*does math in head, smells something burning*) So, that's like less than a month of TV promos for a Spielberg blockbuster. Think we're gonna get a bigger ad budget than that for Serenity?

Typically, stars of movies making the TV interview circuit are promoting their flick which is opening at the end of that week. Think we'll see all our BDHs two or more weeks in advance of Serenity's opening?

There's plenty of time for a 29 July opening and associated promos. I'm not saying that it should or will happen on 7/29/05 (or 29/7/05, for those more comfortable with that format). I'm just saying that time is not a factor...

Respectfully,

zoid

I'd be interested in knowing (for reasons to remain my own) if anyone out there is postponing suicide until after Serenity.

That's the only thing that would make a 23 month delay sort of a good thing.

Only sort of, mind. Because cure is better than postponement, and Joss Whedon has a way of making me want to live a little longer.

Haha.

Okay, my grandparents apparently think I'm depressed and suicidal, and my cousin told me this and the first thing I thought was:

"I could never kill myself. I haven't even seen Serenity yet."

Hahahah

WOW, Morbid!
But I think I understand that notion. I was hoping I would make it to SW3 and I did and for a sec, I was like, I could Die now... Silly silly thought, it's just a movie!

I had a friend die back in 1998 a couple of months before Saving Private Ryan came out. I remember thinking , man, Brendan would have loved that movie.

Life is good guys! Even after the BDM comes out. Life will still be good! Maybe a little hard at times But that's the fun part! As our Shepherd book says "Cause how you get there is the worthier part."

Life is good! Its an adventure!

SKYDANCE

I'm spreading a link to Netflix rental of the movie everywhere I can, and offering to send "friend" invites to the service for anyone who wants one. (Basically, this is a way for anyone, anywhere in the USA, to watch the first couple Firefly DVDs for free.)

Well, now that my plans are being changed again for the summer... Oh yea. And to top it off, the theaters are just getting smart enought to run the trailers in the Tampa Bay area. But it looks like they've added some stuff to the original trailer And they didn't even give a release date, so it seems like 'versal isn't sure when they're gonna be nice and let us see our BDM yet. So get ahold of TWG for me and tell her I'll buy her the beer right before we hit the show

Just double-checked the trailer -- it says "This Fall", and doesn't give a specific date. (Not unusual, because why make a commitment if you don't have to?)

It doesn't matter what the trailer says. For example Fantastic 4 said July 4, and now says July 8. Changing dates on trailers happens all the time.
