Okay, you've probably seen this thread here;

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=10775

And what about this one?

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=10807

It appears Serenity may now be released in just over a month in the US.

Trailers have aparently been shown with Batman Begins, advertising a July 29th release?

Is it true? And does this mean that the other worldwide release dates will be moved forward?

Thanks SS.

And actually, GuideWriter, I posted this here with a clear title, so that everyone can catch the news.

So just be happy for an early release.

PR - even if it IS released on July 29th, there's no guarantee that we'd get it early in the UK too.

Let's all just calm down a little and wait and see what happens....(which is not to say we can't all keep our fingers crossed).

With regard repeat threads, it's a shame there's no way of pinning topics, like other forums have. We're all aware that sometimes people post threads that have already been posted before (yesterday two different people posted new threads about Adam appearing at LFACC even though it had been common knowledge - and indeed the subject of inter-forum warfare- for a week or so.)

Threads get pushed down the list pretty damned quick on this forum (particularly in the run-up to previews) plus it's not always clear from the titles what the thread's actually about so it's quite easy to miss things.

Sorry, had to stick up for my boy!

Just to offer some perspective ...

I think it's been agreed upon by most everyone that the trailer for Stealth is being shown before Batman Begins. Stealth is set to open July 29. Any chance the person who thought the Serenity trailer said July 29 just mixed the two up on accident.

I'm holding out a little hope that he's right, but I'm trying to see both sides of this coin, too.

Heh, sorry PsychicRiver, I didn't mean to be rude. It is just annoying that these forums don't have a bit more organization and types of controls such as stickies, as Fray101 was saying.

I didn't mention it, but if you do post in an old thread then of course it will be brought back up to the top again, which is arguably better than starting a new one.

Good point SteveThePirate about the July 29th date being for Stealth. I think that's very likely what has happened.

Maybe, threads shouldn't be archived so quickly. Depending on the amount of traffic on the board, you may only have two days worth of threads available on the first page of the board and not everyone clicks to see the archived threads.

Also, I don't know if we have a search function for threads. I used it on another board when I was new to it to find old threads on topics that interested me.

StevethePirate,

You may be right. I've asked around all morning and no one else has seen this new date, which seems highly unlikely. I actually just now called the theatre that my friend saw the trailer in. They have Serenity slated for September 30th. I asked about any date attached to the trailer, and they say they don't watch the trailers, so they couldn't tell me. Now she says it is possible that they have updated the trailers, and not yet updated their "scoreboard" (schedule of movies to be released). So we are still in the dark about it.

But gorram it, if someone else doesn't step up and say they have also seen a July release date soon, I'm going to go with your theory.

[Edited to add: I just got a 3rd email from my friend confirming that he saw the 7/29 date attached to the Serenity preview. I know him in a more professional capacity, and he is not the sort to pull my leg. The theatre is not confirming or denying it. So I am still waiting for someone else who has seen maybe the new Serenity trailer to step up and confirm.]

In my capacity as one of the admins at Whedonesque, I just received the following email:

"Yesterday in Huntington WV the Marquee theater showed Batman Begins. The Serenity preview showed before the movie and announced a 7/29/05 show date."

Make of that what you will, but I would have thought Universal would have made an announcement about the release date change if it's going out on a trailer.

Make of that what you will, but I would have thought Universal would have made an announcement about the release date change if it's going out on a trailer.

It's quite possible that Joss & Universal were waiting to announce the news at next week's preview screening, but some of the theaters jumped the gun and attached the trailer announcing the new date prematurely.

If this isn't resolved by next Thursday, I'm convinced that there will be an official announcement one way or another at the preview screening.

I just thought of a few issues with this theoretical release date. Does anyone know when the comic books are supposed to be out by. I know they start sometime in July but would they be done by July 29th?

Then there's the scifi channel showing of Firefly. Wouldn't that sort of be a waste if the movie is going to come out before they're even into the meat of the series yet?

Curiouser and curiouser.

Umm they really have'nt started advertiseing the movie yet, I mean the trailer hasn't been seen before many movies. So how do the exspect to gain enough buzz in little more then a month if no one not surfing the internet would hear about?

So if this release date is true then I'm not sure this is going to work well for the movies success.

Sorry if I repeat post this in a bunch of places. It's just easiest.

So I saw Batman Begins. And it was *awesome*.

The Serenity trailer was attached - I was beside myself. Unfortunately it didn't have as much impact on the audience as one could have hoped for. The volume was quieter as it usually is for trailers. It was the 5th or 6th trailer (and these come after all the product ads too), so people were just wanting the movie to start. But, people did stop talking, and there were a few small laughs at the right moments. So. I'm just pleased it's really out there now!

The trailer was exactly as the current online version, only saying "THIS FALL" at one point and no date.

By the way, this is the Silvercity Riverport theatre in Richmond, BC, Canada.

So my friend isn't crazy. I might drive to Huntington to see the gorram trailer myself!!

I am so relieved that someone else has seen this too. Apparently the Marquee theatre in Huntington is the only one who showed this trailer! I'll call them again tomorrow and BEG them to please confirm this.

If this is true, I hope Universal don't get too eager to release this film in July, I really think it will hurt its general public impact. Sure there have been quite a few sold out previews, but these are previews catering for sci-fi fans in the thousands. This doesn't mean that the general public is going to know what it is.

If this is the case, I really hope they keep it in September, I think running it before SG1 and Battlestar will bring in plenty of new fans and really help spread the love.

They can't just release this puppy and expect results based on the fans themselves.

Hell who am I to know, they are the movie people, but it just seems like they might be rushing it a little too much if this is the case.

On the Silvercity website for Ontario, Steath has a release date of July 29, 2005 and Serenity shows as September 30, 2005 still. And while I would like to see it sooner....it may be that the theatre in question made a mistake. But I am keeping my fingers crossed.

If this is true I reallly hope Universal is ready to ramp marketing and advertising into high gear really fast. So far there has been very little other than the screenings, which the general public doesn't even know about. They need a 2nd trailer, slightly lengthened, and they need attatched to every movie that shows in every theater. They also need to get more TV time, and do some heavy cross channel advertising for the show going on Sci-Fi. I'd love to see an earlier release, but not at the expense of getting enough awarness generated.

So, my experience in Olympia, Washington was pretty much the same. Small crowd for a 12:30 showing of Batman Begins. Knowing the Serenity trailer was likely to be playing, I was all prepared to whoop and holler... but it would have just been too conspicuous in a theater with only 40ish people. Both the trailer and Batman Begins DID rock, though. BB has the best supporting cast I've seen in a superhero movie, IMHO.

I confirm what GuideWriter says--no 7/29/05 date on the Serenity trailer, but Stealth, which does open 7/29, was also playing. I was specifically aware of this rumor, and was specifically looking for any new information in the trailer. I wish it was true, but the trailer reel before Batman Begins doesn't seem to confirm it.

If you want any slim hope, maybe the distributors in the Pacific Northwest didn't get prints of the same trailer reel as the others who are reporting different things.

Trailers have aparently been shown with Batman Begins, advertising a July 29th release?

Is it true? And does this mean that the other worldwide release dates will be moved forward?

The first is Miloradell, who was kind enough to offer two tickets to fellow Minnesota Browncoats when two of her friends decided they had something else to do. She seems quite creditable, although I haven't had an association

The second thread is from Static, who's creditability is solid as a rock.

The rest seems to be speculation and possibly a mistake made by the theater in question.

The official Universal web site for Serenity still says September 30.

The IMDb (Internet Movie Database) still says September 30, although Australia gets it September 29. Philistines!

May I suggest that we keep checking the facts and stop spreading rumors?

When Joss Whedon says "Oh, by the way, did I mention the movie release got moved up?" THEN I might believe it.

Yeah... what she said.

I have a contact who's been working in Hollywood for over 30 years and now works with a charity organization. He's been looking into getting tickets to the premiere, and all his information says it's still going to be September 30. He said he'll keep me informed if anything changes.

So until someone O-fficial makes an announcement to the contrary, I'm not getting any hopes up for an earlier release.

Cheers.

I am not sure to whom you are making this suggestion, to stop spreading rumors. If you'll read these threads carefully, you'll see that no one has spread rumors. I was checking facts when I asked if anyone else in the country has seen the 7/29/05 date on the trailer. I mentioned that I needed corroboration and this could be an error. When PsychicRiver posted this thread, she was trying to get more people reading about this so folks could respond. How is that spreading a rumor?

Sure lots of people speculated on this thread. But most of these boards are made up of speculation, sometimes from quite articulate and brilliant minds. I don't see these posts as spreading rumors either.

So it turns out the 7/29 date on the trailer was an isolated incident--probably an error on the part of the one theatre. But it DID happen. No one lied or embellished. To me, that is what a rumor would be: exaggeration or misrepresentation of facts. Neither happened in this case.
