This thread, as it stands is pure speculation. Everything I know about a new Firefly series, is rumor, and one solid quote from Joss Whedon.

the rumor: Sci-Fi network and Joss are trying to buy out of the contract with Fox network, making way for a new series in 2006. source: local comic shop.

the quote:
Usaweekend.com
Whedon, 40, says if he goes back to "Angel" or "Buffy" it will be through "Willow or Faith, or another character that has great resonance with fans." He’s now getting "Serenity," his first movie as a director, ready for fall release. It’s based on his former series "Firefly:" "I refused to let it die." Plus, he is percolating ideas for "about 30 things -- TV series, books, comic books. That’s why I take pills to sleep."

Notice the first thing he mentions is TV series. He could also mean a new Buffyverse series.

Is there more red tape involved in this other than the Fox contract? Has my wishful thinking finally gotten the best of me? Please let me know
If anyone has any facts, opinions, or comments about a new Firefly series, they would be greatly appreciated.

ZEEK

Common thought is: no. He's said it multiple times that Firefly has moved onto the big screen and it won't be going back.

Now you could say that he's lying because universal would not be happy hearing he wants to jump ship as soon as he can. I tend to believe it though. The franchise jumped genres already. I'm sure they don't want to jump back right away.

There's probably legal matters involved. The famous 10 year contract Fox supposedly has on the TV rights to Firefly. Universal probably has some sort of rights now too.

I assume the rumour you're hearing was sparked by the news that SciFi is going to reair the original episodes starting in July. Some articles about it fail to mention that the original episodes is all they are airing. They aren't starting up the series again with new episodes after the originals. At least not that we know of.

WHOISRIVER

Okay, now you're using an old quote here. This is a debate we've been over lots of times. The reality is: none of us know for sure, but at the moment the only future for Firefly is movies. If the movie does really well, we may have to revisit this topic. If the movie bombs, it's all over (well, comics etc).
