the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Thank God/Mother Earth/The Ineffable Nothingness/The Sciences (i.e. whatever folks might be worshipping these days) for newbies and their questions. Never thought you'd hear that, did ya'?

This seemed to cry out for a thread of its own &, seein' as how zed is such a modest guy, I thought I'd just post it for him.

This site, which is a significant other in my life, was getting a bit boring for me. I suspect others who've been avoiding the BDM threads may feel it, too. And I've noted some sharp responses to folks who've identified themselves as new here, when they've asked questions or started threads that mostly recapitulate what has gone before.

So, to all you rookies out there, welcome home.

This is the best Firefly site in English, though there are many others (I have over twenty bookmarked). Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions, or start new old threads. But I also recommend you search the archives on this site -- there's gold in them thar hills. If you find a two-year-old thread, & reply to it, you put it back in Current Discussions. How cool is that? A suggestion: if you want to respond to the overall discussion in an old thread, rather than to a specific post within it, reply to the person who started the thread. You might just bring an old friend back to the Fire.

And if you haven't already found it, you can look forward to "Ten things I learned from watching Firefly".

I feel compelled to agree.

Also, I'd like to add that "The Ten Things I Learned From Firefly" is my favorite thread as well, and it resides in the Episodes Forum.

"Modest", moi? To quote the inestimable Mr. Bugs Bunny, "He don't know me very well, do he?"

But, we are in agreement that fresh eyes and minds (even if they're rapidly approaching decrepitude like mine) can occasionally spark meaningful and worthwhile debate. Sometimes, when we are forced to reexamine the old hashed-out topics, we come upon unexpected new insights.

In my career field, this happens all the time when we train apprentices. A lot of the subject matter is old hat, true; but every so often, we gain a different perspective (thanks to the 'n00b') that challenges the status quo. Therefore, bright minds seeking illumination can lead us all to greater enlightenment.

And of course, we were all newbies once...

Novitiatively,

zoid

P.S.
Notice how I used the royal 'we' throughout this post? So much for modesty, hmmm? Rereading it, I even managed to sound like a total prig for most of it; with the exception of the Bugs quote, which oddly humanizes me. Sort of a reverse anthropomorphication: the humanized animal makes me look more human by sympathetic connection (and I promptly spoil that by mentioning it). Sometimes I am too perverse for even my own tastes...
