THEDUKE

okay, there may already be a thread discussing this, but i couldn't find it.
Wanted to know other Firefly fans opinions on the Doctor Who series Finale (haha, it's a series, see that, it's English, so it's a series, no ridiculous "season" malarkey, neway)

I thought the episode itself was okay, i thought that it didn't make too much sense why Rose didn't die but the Doctor did, they both had kinda the same thing inside of them. I very much liked some of the scenes with Rose and Mickey. I was also quite suprised at how much i liked Mickey and his selflessness at helping the girl he loved run away from him again. I say suprised because I HATED MICKEY in the first episode, maybe he jsut took a while to get used to.

However, the regeneration i found a little disapointing. I'm 18, so this is my first regeneration, and i was expecting something magnificent, life changing (because that's kidna what happens isn't it) i was expecting fireworks, not a head moving back, and then snapping back different, maybe it's because i was expecting so much, maybe it will grow on me.

Final note, do they not realise captain jack is still alive? Are they gonna go back for him? I hope they do, cos i liked the slighlty more knowledgable element he brought to the show, it allwoed you to see someone that more understood the docotr's technology and thinking but wasn't quite in league with his geniusness. Plus i wanted to see him take the p*ss out of the sonic screwdriver some more. "i've never looked at a screwdriver and thought, that could be more sonic"

anyway, what did other people think? DISCUSS

I enjoyed it - series got better and better.

Regenerations have never been much to look at - the Tom Baker/Peter Davison one looked like he'd had a tonne of flour tipped over him! But that was the 80s so we should be forgiving.

Fair point about how Rose bounced back so quickly whilst it had a more profound effect on the Doctor - but as we know the regeneration had to be triggered by something so there you go.

Captain Jack will return - mid season I believe.

(sorry - not the most incisive review, it's just too hot to think properly!)

COSMICFUGITIVE

I loved the series finale. It was a nice balance of action and emotional character interaction. It would have been too much if they focused solely on the invasion of the Daleks, IMHO.

Personal highlights include that BB contestant getting killed by the Daleks. The way it was executed was chilling. (At least in my mind.) The 'silent flashing' of the lights on the Dalek's head, as seen through the glass, was more chilling than the shrill, distorted voice of those things!

When Captain Jack was exterminated I actually yelled at the telly! (And cheered when he came back to life.) On a side note, last week's moment where he pulled out the tiny laser gun while totally nekkid was hilarious. Classic moment.

Using the Anne Droid to fight the Daleks was classic too!

The acting was really strong in this episode, (especially Eccleston) which made me feel sad knowing that he'd left.

There were alot of deep messages/morals scattered throughout the episode (Rose's speech in the cafe comes to mind), which I thought were really good.

The only downside is that I worked out the 'Bad Wolf' mystery prematurely during the episode.(After trying to avoid solving it all series.)

When Rose was sitting with Mickey and the words appeared on the concrete, I though 'No, it can't be her?', which kinda dulled the impact towards the end.

Although, the last 5-10 minutes were a nice change of pace. It has to be the best moment of the series yet.

The regeneration was handled well too.

I also started to like Rose's mum in this episode too. (I found the character annoying in the first episode, but she came through at the end which I loved.)

Overall, it was a great 45 minutes. Can't wait for the christmas special and series 2!

I had a great time with the whole 'first' season! I'd agree with others who have said the 'Rose' solution smelled a bit of a deus ex machina, but it certainly had been built up all season, so not so much.

Yep - the Dalek outside the window was truly a great moment - now everyone can have nightmares about seeing Daleks floating outside their bedroom windows...mine is an evil laugh...

Glad Jack is coming back - he really, really grew on me.

New Doctor looks okay - not so bad - and his immediately cheery attitude was refreshing. Regeneration, I'd agree, was NOT what I was expecting - for what it's worth, Duke, I'd argue that the special effects etc. during regenerations have NEVER been impressive in the original series. But it's not really important - the important this is that we're going to have to get used to a new Doctor - I sure hope they can equal Eccelstein, who I would argue was a nice blend of the 4th and 5th Doctors with a serious touch of sorrow thrown in.

I was a little bit disappointed with the resolution of "Bad Wolf", but I understand what RTD did what he did, to tie it all back to Rose, rather than bring back some obscure character from the classic series or create a new character at the last minute.

I didn't have a problem with the doctor dying. He took the power from Rose into himself and thus died to save her.

My favorite moment was the Doctor sending Rose home. Watching all the humans die in a futile attempt to stop the Daleks was great too.

Sure parts of the finale could have been better, but I enjoyed it a lot.

I have to say - this new series is NOT squeamish about getting very, very dark. All those humans on Floor 000 biting it was rough. Definite hard edge to THIS series.

I've really loved the whole series, "must-see TV". I really loved the finale as well, though it reminded me quite a lot of the end of Series 4 in Buffy when they defeat Adam, which is absolutely excellent by me. I have seen somewhere that when Joss was in the UK as a teenager he watched Dr. Who, I'd love to know what he thinks of the series, as Russell T. Davies and other people have listed Buffy and Angel as among their favourite television.

Also I quite liked the fact that Rose was shown as strong, and she stayed around while the Dr. regenerated. Actually (for the person above who was a bit disappointed) I think it was probably one of the more exciting regenerations to date.

Ages to wait for more though.

Debbie

NESS

I loved the finale, but since I'm new to the Doctor Who universe, I'm easily impressed.

I didn't really care about the resolution of the Bad Wolf thing but I did like the fact that there was a reference to it in every episode. Now that's planning. The thing with Rose at end was a bit deus ex machina but it does show her dedication to the Doctor and how much she has changed since the first episode.

Is anyone going to comment on how the Doctor kissed Rose? I read a spoiler by accident but figured it wasn't a big deal when I saw the first kiss, when the Doctor kisses Rose on the forehead out of joy. But then he kissed her a second time, albeit to save her life, and I was all "huh?". I was under the impression that the Doctor really cares for his companions but there's never been kissage (unless you count the Doctor Who movie but most fans seem to ignore it). It wasn't until I was watching the last Doctor Who Confidential that I got it. Russell T Davies explained it so well; the Doctor loves Rose, that's been the subtext all along as one guy was saying, and not only does he get to save her life but he gets to do the one thing he's been dying to do in order to do it.

I can't wait to see how the Tenth Doctor is. I have to say that the regeneration wasn't bad. I'm sure the earlier ones hadn't been that stellar either, but that was back when they didn't have a budget to do anything cool.

I can't wait for Christmas now. New Doctor Who and gifts.

NOLA999

Hello. I'm not a Dr Who fan myself but I mentioned to a friend that there were new episodes and he freaked out. Do you know anywhere to download the episodes? I'd like to get a few for him.

Thanks.

Oh, your "friend" wants the new episodes? It's okay to admit you want to see the new series yourself.

Just kidding. You can try things like Shareaza (a spyware free p2p piece of software) or newsgroups (you can subscribe to Easynews.com for $10, which gets you 10 gigs).

That, or make friends with a Canadian who has been taping the series there.
