Ok, so my opinion of aintitcoolnews.com just went far south. I just read a review by a fellow Browncoat saying that Serenity was " the nail in the coffin" for the firefly universe. Now some of the points that he referred to i kinda agreed with- what i didnt agree with was the fact that he said that at least two points of the movie did not need to happen and are " Pointless". Read this for yourself.....

Well, that is just one person's opinion of the movie. I saw it and loved it, so it doesn't effect me much.

But if you haven't seen it and were thinking about it, don't let this article sway you. See it for yourself and make up your own mind! And then see it again to make sure you didn't miss anything, and while you're at it, 3rd time's a charm. And then decide whether you really like it or not!

Wow that's the most negative review I've read and it's fomr a supposed fan as well. I'm a bit boggled by that. I can see where some of the points come from....but it irks me to think he claims that the River and Reaver plotlines were 'weaker' aspects of the show and that this guy knows how to 'properly' start a franchise....

I dunno... I happen to love the movie.

Yeah, I saw it for the first time last night. I loved it. No review is going to affect my opinion one way or the other at this point. There were a couple of places early in the film where I briefly thought I might not like the BDM as much as the series. That feeling didn't last long. The farther into the film we got, the more I liked it.

The question he raises is if this film will interest anyone who just strolls into the theatre not ever having seen Firefly, and if it ends at a place from which we can see further adventures proceeding.

I haven't yet seen any of the preview screenings, so I wonder if anyone has gone with someone who knows nothing about the Firefly 'verse and what their reaction was.

I think a new viewer can "get it". The couple of points that a few Browncoats have vociferously disliked about the BDM should actually be much LESS dis-affecting to someone with no prior knowledge of Firefly. That's just my opinion, however. Unfortunately, I don't personally know any non-Browncoats who've seen one of the pre-screenings.

And I DO think the ending is really wide open - could lead into a sequel or end the franchise. Personally, after finally seeing the BDM myself, I'm really hoping for that sequel thing.

I went with someone who hadn't seen the series and had little idea what to expect, except the short synopsis I gave them of who the characters were. And they loved it.

I loved the movie. I also agree with the points the reviewer brings up. But I disagree with his negative interpretation of what those points MEAN for the audience, long-time fans and newbies alike.

I brought my girlfriend, who hadn't seen but a few snippets of the series and was unfamiliar with the Firefly/Serenity 'verse. Her reaction on leaving the theater? "Amazing". She thought the writing, acting, directing, and pretty much everything else were all great, and she commented on how she loved the strong female characters (a Joss specialty, of course) and how impressive it was that she felt involved in the action scenes, which in science fiction films usually leave her cold.

I'm afraid I have to agree whole-heartedly with the review. I was majorly disappointed in the movie.

I thought River was a great plot point in the series... and I felt like she was just Buffy'd up for this one. The plot-line was all about her, and yet it failed the setup that was given in the show. They totally jumped the shark with her.

Several points in the movie felt just tacked on. The villain was kind of curious, but not really very compelling... less interesting than Jubal Early or Niska. Nothing is done to set up Mal, not much for Inara, not much for Book either. The acting was great, the effects were cool, there was even some great dialogue (though not as good as any given episode of the show)... but the story sucked.

I, for one, was very let down. I can't imagine this will draw any wider audience than the show. I think even a lot of fans of the show will see it and dislike it (I went with four people, and not one of us liked it, we went home in depressed silence). If they're not drawing significant new appreciation, and losing fan base to boot, we're not going to see anything further Firefly related. This is the end.

Which is a shame, but at least I know which Hollywood personality to blame this one on specifically. No more murky corporate gaffes, no more mysterious ratings conspiracies, and it sure as hell ain't the fans fault the movie sucks.

I haven't seen it yet (I didn't know about the new round of screenings until it was way too late. And it was in Newport just 5 minutes from me!)

But my question is if anyone knows if any changes have been made to the film based on the screenings since I thought that was part of the reason for the screenings to begin with. A simple yes or no answer would do since I am trying to avoid spoilers.

I took a friend to the latest rounds of screenings who refused to see Firefly. He came into the theatre expecting to hate it. He came out of the theatre a true Browncoat. He loved the film and said it was one of the best films he has ever seen. This is coming from a person who has never seen an episode of Firefly.

You see, the problem is that we are all looking at it from the standpoint of fans. He said the plot was easy to understand and follow and that the characters were great. Yeah, he might not have been as much affected by events in the movie because he hadn't seen the series but that was more to affect the fans anyways.

I think if Universal sells this well this could be a huge blockbuster. Serenity is a great film. It will deeply affect the fans and it will entertain the general audience. Trust me. If Universal sells this right, this will bury Episode III. After seeing the movie, I am more to this belief than I was before. I can't wait to see the Final Cut with all the music and such.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

RK is absolutely right. Sith is about to enter the top ten in all-time box office and Serenity is so much better...

I don't actually think that Serenity will do better at the box office than Episode 3, which had a built-in fan base 28 years in the making. But it should do well enough to be considered a success and to get those two sequels made.

According to the Universal rep I spoke to after seeing the movie for the second time, the answer is yes--but the changes were very subtle, the movie just had a smoother feel to it than when I saw it in May.
