* SERENITY - The Box Job - July *
****************************************

The Concept

UK browncoats fund me buying 10 Firefly DVD boxsets. I will take these boxsets, and add SERENITY promotional material, a letter from fans detailing about the series and what it means to us (signed with the names of those who donate), and make it into a ten SERENITY BOXES.

Additionally, it will include two trailers for SERENITY on an exclusive DVD.

The Serenity Boxes will be distributed to 10 film and television critics across the UK, for local and national newspapers.

How much money is needed?

A suggested donation would be £5. If 40 people donate a fiver, we will have enough to purchase all the box sets, material and postage.

Why?

Serenity needs publicity in the UK. Whilst it is selling #4 on the Amazon US DVD charts (#2 for Television), it is about #250 in the UK. That's a huge difference. UIP (the UK distributors) will be doing their best to raise the profile in the UK - but if a film critic receives a personally put together package from the fans about the movie with trailers and FIREFLY DVDs, they are more likely to pay it some serious attention.

SERENITY opens 1 week after the US. The 2nd weekend box office is critical for financial viability of the movie in terms of sequels, and as such if the film completely fails to impact here it will not be good news.

How can I pay?

Just click here -> http://tinyurl.com/7po2q

You can pay online above using Switch, Visa, Delta etc etc.

Please also email me (promote@whoisriver.com) to let me know your full (or first) name if you donate for the letter.

How do I know the money will be used properly?

I post on this forum all the time. The money will be used only for this purpose. If there's any problems, I will refund the money via Paypal.

When we reach the target I will photograph the boxsets as they arrive, and post photos of the finished SERENITY boxes.

I will post statements each week as to how much money we've raised.

What happens if we raise MORE money than targetted?

We'll buy more boxes! If we run out of people to target the boxsets at, the remaining money will be donated to charity.

Small print?

It's nothing to do with Universal, UIP etc etc. This is a browncoat job to keep flyin'.

Its definately doing well here, the price of the boxset has gone up over the past few months

and I had a serenity badge (given to me at serentiy con by some very nice bloke) on my bag at the green day gig a couple of weeks back and people kept yelling firefly quotes at me and exclaiming that whedon is indeed god!!

I recon i could manage a fiver for the BDHs

I've decided to trust you, after all, its only money! Hope it works. By the way, if you take the money and run I have one message for you:

"Keep the money. Use it to buy a funeral. It doesn't matter where you go, or how far you fly. I will hunt you down, and the last thing you see will be my blade."

Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Sorry, I just could resist some firefly quotage.

So will donations be accepted from Browncoats across the pond? It sounds a little like you want this to be a UK-sponsored affair, but I imagine that our dollars can convert into pounds fairly easily and I doubt you can ever get too many contributions.

As far as trust goes, anyone who is a regular poster/lurker at the UB's can figure out that this is a legitimate proposition by pulling up the similarly titled thread and noticing who originated it.

Was the show ever aired in Ireland or the UK? I don't remember if it was.

In the case of Ireland the box set cost EUR80 which some folk found a little too expensive for a t.v. show that didn't make through it's first season.

Given that I'm living in Sydney now I thought I would look for a copy of it and picked it up for AUS$30 which is about EUR20. The is a major set back me thinks. Also among my circle of friends there has been about 2/3 copies changing hands or lots of folk watching it together.

A little more exposure might do it the world of good. Game, Sci-Fi, etc. cons with a videveg or equivalent facility giving more vid time to the show might help. I don't know whats going on with the RPG (under the radar for the last few months) but that would certainly get people looking for source material and lets face it the show is pretty much all there is (correct me if I'm wrong here)

Also drinking games... the biblical style miracles that spring from drinking games.

I bought one of those Blue Sun T's and folk got to asking me what it was. It's not quite wearing an advertising board but it did strike up a conversation or two about the show.

Anyhoo that's my 2c

it was aired here, on the sci-fi channel. but it had a tough spot in that it was up against coronation street (*sigh*). but it got treated well, all the eps were shown in the correct order and stuff.

it would be great, if maybe august/september time one of the terrestrial channels could buy it, get some massive air play before serenity, but doubt it would happen :(

sky one never bought it, or attempted i think, in fact they're losing all of their good american type shows to E4

Firefly is in the middle of it's 4th or 5th full run on Sci Fi UK if I'm not mistaken - can't seem to access the SFUK site at the moment to check...

That's a great idea; one that I had myself a while back, but lacked the wherewithal and time to do anything about. I do think that if the critics are benevolent towards the film it stands a much better chance of doing well over here, and hopefully most would be willing to give the boxed set a chance (probably not all though...).

I will try and get round to donating some money in the next few days for this...

You guys have already donated £55, enough to purchase the first 3 Firefly DVD boxsets!

International browncoats are welcome to donate. If this idea proves successful it may be worth replicating it worldwide.

Wow, thanks everybody so much!

After less than two days we've already raised over half the money needed!!

The first 5 Firefly box sets have all been ordered and such arrive on Monday - I will put photos online as proof at the beginning of the week.

Still 50% of the way to go! I will be ordering boxes and paper to make the Serenity boxes, a certain film company has supplied certain leaflets about a certain film, and I've got the letters ready.

I was thinking this would take all of July to organise, but at this rate we should have finished by the end of next week.

Browncoats, awesome.
