I've finally gotten Ice Cream Guy to agree to watch Firefly, only catch is that he's only agreed to watch 2 episodes. Obviously one of those episodes is going to be Serenity. But what should the other episode be? (If he likes it he'll watch more.)

What kind of guy is he? Actiony? War Stories. Comedy? Mrs. Reynolds or Trash. Suspense/Heist? Ariel. Characters/Drama? Out of Gas. Philosophy? Objects. If I would be down to two episodes I might not even start with Serenity, unless I know the person doesn't mind a somewhat slower start.

I am all for War Stories. It's a grabber, plus River giving reasons to find out more about the show.

Are y'all kidding? If he only gets Serenity +1 epi, can there be any doubt that it should be Out of Gas? The real pilot lays out the basic premise and the cast so much better than The Train Job (much as I like that epi - it's a marvel considering its origin), but OOG fleshes out a very great proportion of the back-story arc. IMHO, those 2 episodes (well, 3 if you insist on being so literal) contain the necessary kernels for even the most inquisitive and exploring minds to understand the movie.

But may I beg to counsel patience here? (there are still a couple of months before the BDM premiere) It took me many, many months to convince my wife, who isn't any kind of SF fan, to watch the DVD's, which I bought as soon as I could get my hands on them. In truth, it only happened when she recognized that I would drag everyone I knew off to see the movie, herself no exception, and she wanted to understand the story line. So, she watched the whole damned thing on DVD, and now wants to see the BDM even more than I do.

Perhaps there is some minor tendency towards justice after all........

I've got to agree with Serenity & Out of Gas.

We have to be positive and assume that having watched (any) two episodes, your friend will be hooked and want to watch the rest. As a sort of prequel, Out of Gas can be watched out of sequence without ruining the story. War Stories has too many surprise developments (well, OK, maybe only the River one but that was quite a biggie!) Plus you'd lose the backstory with Niska.

Suppose Shindig could be a harmless alternative though.

I'd go of War Stories too I reckon as is funny and brings out characters - or my personal favourite "Our Mrs R" ....

I don't understand people who are willing to watch stuff out of sequence.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

What's the situation? Is this a person who would watch two or three eps & then, no matter what they thought of 'em, never watch any more? If all you want is for them to think highly of the only two or three eps they'll ever watch, sure, show 'em the pilot, Outa Gas, & Objects In Space. But get away from 'em as soon as you can after that, 'cause they're nuts.

Or is this a relatively sane person who might like Firefly, might not, or might even love it as much as you? Well to tell the truth, in all this excitement, I kinda lost count myself. But seein' as how this is the most powerful SF series on DVD, & could blow his head clean off, you gotta ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?
What do you hope for? If you hope he loves the show, don't try to cherry pick the best eps. If he likes those & continues on to watch the rest, he may think the show declined in quality. Show 'em in order. If he's gonna love the show, he'll love 'em that way. I think it's the best way to leave 'em wanting more.

Best o' luck, E.

See, the problem is that he considers himself a snob when it comes to stuff like this and assumes that sense I like it, it must be crap. I've been threating to tie him to a chair and make him watch, but insofar the only part he's interested in is the part where he's tied up.
