If you've been following my posts, you've learned that I want to raise awareness for the BDS and the BDM at my school...Now, i wasn't allowed to put posters up, but our principal said that I could do a presentation on Firefly during our weekly assembley! In front of all of Middle School!

Now, here's where the problem is. Number 1) What points should I make, Number 2) What clip from an episode should I show (try to keep it within 5 minutes, and include the episode and a brief description of the clip) and Number 3) Should I include anything else aside from a speech and a clip?

Thanks very much for your help.

The trailer and Crow through the engine! Use the box set as a visual aid, so people know what to look for at the store!

I don't wanna show the trailer, it gives too much away about River...And Crow doesn't really give too much to the story. This is people...kids...Who have NEVER heard of Firefly. We need to sell it to them through more then CGI and violence, even if it is hilarious violence.

The robbery from the Train Job? Action + CGI + Thrilling Heroics = Win!

Once again, don't want to show too much CG or action...Then again, leading contender is the Patience scene, from Jayne with the transmitters to Mal saying 'I do the job, then I get paid.' With the Wash, Simon, River and Dobson scenes edited out.

Talk about the show's inspiration from the post Civil War US, its Chinease influences, and its heart.

I'd show the segment from Safe where they are gonna burn River for being a witch and the "Big Damn Heroes" appear. Or maybe the opening from the pilot, at least the portion that bridges the gap from the end of the Battle of Serenity to outsmarting the Alliance cruiser. Oh, and the opening with the hokey song and horses.

Maybe mention the fight for Serenity (the movie). The show and the movie are not just about Serenity and her crew, seems its a journey we've all taken together. So I'd mention the FFF website, the DVD set, and the amazing journey from cancelled TV show to major motion picture. Mention me specifically (everybody loves a Hero). And omit any references to space hookers (it is Middle School).

Good Luck.

Well you are going to need to do a Serenity Valley scene, it's crucial to the plot of the series (maybe the scene where Mal talks about how the Alliance was supposed to "waltz" through Serenity Valley, and they choked them with those words).

Just a suggestion.

I'd suggest trying to keep away from making Star Trek comparisons - makes it sound a little less geeky and a little more cool if you ask me.

Mention Star Trek and I think people will automatically associate it with nerds and then avoid it so that they don't look like nerds themselves.

Similarly I'd avoid calling it pure science-fiction. Call it an action show (well it is but in a sci-fi/western setting. So it ain't a lie per se) or something :D

I wouldn't show any of the 'war' either. As much as I love Firefly, I think there are far more effective war sequences out there. If you want to show a war sequence, show something from Saving Private Ryan (obviously this doesn't come into your presentation). If it were me, and you're presenting to a young audience, I'd worry more about making an impression than concerning myself with the plot. If they are interested in Firefly after your presentation then they can go find out a bit more about the plot themselves. Sure I'd speak about it but I wouldn't incorporate it into your video sequence.

I know you said you didn't particularly want to market it through the violent side nor the use of CGI but for me, I would say that's the most eye-catching bit and the bits for which it might be most remembered.

If it were me, I'd show the main action sequence from "War Stories". Guns! Action! People Dying! What more could a young person want? Well, not dying obviously, but there's the dramatic element there which is what I meant.

If it were me, I wouldn't focus on converting people into Firefly fans, I'd simply make people aware of Serenity and what *it* is. That way, when they see the trailer they'll think "Ah right, that's what he/she was on about!".

I don't think you can convert any fans in the mere 5 mins you have but you can at least raise awareness of the franchise.

Did that make sense? Twice in one day? Good heavens...

PS. I don't actually know what the age group of 'Middle School' is...

I think the opening sequence of The Train Job is a great way to show the style of the show.

Now we're finishing this deal, and then maybe we'll come back for those morons who got themselves caught. You can't change that by getting all... bendy...

You could also bring up how Joss views the economic interdependence of China and the United States impacting ideas like liberty, freedom and a government free from corruption and the influence of business and talk about what the independents represent vis a vis these changes.

Oh, just FYI, Middle School is 12-15. Hmm...Yeah, the Train Job barfight seemed a popular choice among the (very few) Browncoats at my school...I'll probably get a 5 minute clip and 5 minutes of speech, so... Keep the ideas coming, I like it, I like it!

Show them the opening prologue of either THE TRAIN JOB, OUR MRS. REYNOLDS or JAYNESTOWN. Those openings really capture the spirit of the series and the characters perfectly.

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

How about the part where Mal keeps poking the guy with the sword. Short and sweet if you wanted to do an intro to the characters.
