Is Joss serious? Is there still hope for our show? I hope the answer is yes, but i have to wonder...since i have never actually met Joss, is it possible that he is a sadist and deriving pleasure from this? I hope no, but with all the actors signing onto other shows... my faith is waivering...please dont crucify me for this my fellow browncoats, i just want some more information.

It's cliche, but in a cute way and I'm too burnt-out to care anyway: Never give up! Never surrender!

Take what hope you have and nurture it. Even if you end up on the losing side, it's still might not be the wrong one.

Or something. Here I'm trying to be eloquent and inspiring and I just come off dumb.

as do we all. won't be no crucifixions on this post.

keep a sharp eye on the TV news either here or on other sites. there's always hope and from what we've heard on JW's feelings about this show, i think he's going to fight the good fight. whether he and we are on the losing side or not still remains to be seen.

i keep preaching this, and i'm just gonna keep on preaching--the television business is VERY fickle when it comes to series, as we are all painfully aware. just cuz actors are signing on with other series now doesn't guarantee it will be the new Law & Order, or Dr. Who--a year from now, who knows?

crack hardy, browncoat. there's a long dry road ahead.

Probably, but not to the extent that we as fans would like. As far as I know, Firefly will never return as a series on television.

The way I'm interpreting what he said is that Firefly will return, but return as one or all of the following:

1. SCI-FI UK's rebroadcast of the original episodes as well as the 3 unaired.

2. As DVD sets. This is becoming more and more likely as recent news would attest.

3. As a comic book series. Joss might be willing. I'm sure Darkhorse is once "Fray" is over and done with in a couple of months (note: April 23, 2003 for #7 and May 21, 2003 for #8. TPB in November 2003).

4. A Firefly movie. I'm guessing unlikely at this point or in the forseeable future.

So, yeah, no doubt that Firefly will definately fly again.

I think Joss & Co. are using the original 15 episodes of Firefly as a calling card for some future Firefly project. And what a fantastic calling card the original season makes, no? To add to it:

DVDs will soon be changing hands.
Word of mouth will grow.
Sci Fi UK will soon be opening up the European continent.
Word of mouth will grow some more.
If a comic comes about... more potential fans reached, more publicity.

I think the best is yet to come for us Browncoats.

That is barring an outbreak of WWIII (which, sadly, is more likely now than it has been in decades) or global economic collapse (ditto).

But hey, stay shiny anyway!!

I posted a response elsewhere, saying that the original Star Trek took years before the first movie came out. I believe that we will not be waiting as long!

I still think we could see a TV movie-of-the-week, or a series of MOWs, as that would be possible to shoot on Nathan's hiatus from his new series. I have a lot of hope in this regard... It makes sense, especially if the show does well overseas and on DVD.

As for the show returning, well, it has happened before. Forever Knight came back from the dead twice, as did Due South. Alien Nation came back on FOX in a series of MOWs as well. The financial situation now is of coure quite different from 5 or 10 years ago. However, it has happened before. I refuse to give up all hope.

This is totally unrelated, but LJC I like that quote on the end of your post...

Me :) I got hit with it while re-reading _Good Omens_ about 10 years ago. Just the mental image of Crowley's Bentley near the end...

Except that Firefly isn't just Nathan Fillion. It'll be difficult to get the entire group together to do a movie-of-the-week. And with the rest of the cast being as talented and up-and-coming as they are, I'm sure their schedules will be even more hectic in the years to come.

Oh, I'm all aware of that. It's only that so far as I knew, Nathan's the only one with a potentially long-term secure gig that would make it extra hard for a MOW that I knew of thus far. I mean, Alan's movie will shoot for weeks or months, but even with "I, Robot" he could consciveably make room in his schedule for a 3-4 week MOW shoot... And until we hear about the rest fo the cast, Nate was the only stumbling block that I really saw... Even so, if it were to shoot in the spring/pilot season or even in the summer, when series go on hiatus, then it would be mroe likely to round folks up, if that makes sense...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think it is safe to assume that the future of Firefly is going to rely on many factors:

-Joss. Will he have the time and drive to dedicate to a reborn Firefly? From what we have all read, I would say w/ his obvious love for the show and cast, he would make the time. He has the drive.

-cast. Will the original cast be available? Will current commitments or near future commitments keep them from picking up their roles? Will some even be interested after the hiatus? Some, like Adam, Nathan and Gina seem to be eager to pick up where they left off, what of the others?

-venue. How will Joss get it back to the public. Pitch it as a mini series? Made for TV movie? Reruns of original season to see how ratings turn out?

-DVD sales. I think that if the DVD sales do well, then those numbers may convince potential sponsors to back the show, perhaps even a network.

Look at Sci Fi lately. They seem to pick up all the Fox cancelled series, though it takes them years to do so. They ran Space Above and Beyond for awhile. Now they are running Roar. Could be that Firefly winds up there as reruns, though I would say it will be several years before that happens.

I would like to see Firefly back on TV, but I think it will take a monumental effort at this point.

As far as rebroadcasting episodes or releasing season runs on video/DVD, Firefly has some similarities to Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner.

Designed as a limited-run series (a mini-series before we had a name for it), The Prisoner runs for 17 episodes, with a clearly defined beginning and ending. In point of fact, McGoohan, it's creator, producer and oftentimes writer and director, had originally envisioned a series of only 8 episodes; Sir Lew Grade, his distributor, did not feel that he could sell such a short run and insisted on (I think) 25 episodes. They compromised on 17, though hard-core fans can point out the 8 primary episodes for you.

To date, The Prisoner has been shown on the BBC, CBS, PBS and the SciFi Network -- and those are just the channels I can think of off the top of my head. It has also been released in several limited runs in video (Beta & VHS) and laserdisk formats.

Recently, the entire run was released by A & E on DVD; I am the proud owner of just this set and yes, it rocks. It rocks HARD!!!!.

The kicker is The Prisoner was first shown in 1967 and we're still watching and talking about it today -- and people are still making money off of it.

Firefly, though cancelled, will live on through such venues as the SciFi Network -- maybe even PBS -- and through the DVDs we so eagerly await.

The everyone will realize that the little space western thingie we kept bending their ears over in 2002 is pretty damn incredible!!!!

So when you talk about the dvds are you just refering to the DVD of the episodes already made, or has much weight been given to the "direct to DVD" idea that people were kicking around a while ago?
