Edinburgh Film Festival. Serenity. Completed film. Joss Whedon. Joss Whedon documentary ("Reel Life"). August.

Book Friday.

Edit: You may need to goto "find films" and enter "Serenity" to see it - Fireflyfans.net forum software is messing up the link above.

I'm a member of staff at one particular hotel chain and can (hopefully) get staff discount on a twin room. I've checked, and they have rooms available, and it would be £90 for two nights (I don't want to book a room til I've got tickets booked, just in case! *g*) so I'd be looking for someone to share - in effect, paying for a night each.

If I get my staff discount, it'll probably work out at around £50 for two nights.

Edit: When I say £90, I mean for the room, not per person. So £45 each. £25 each if I get the discount. The issue with the discount is, they only have a certain number set aside, and sometimes in the busier months they don't allow it at all.

Edit again: Gorram it, my employers are trying to bankrupt me - they meant £90 per night! *dies* So back to the drawing board - I also will be looking for somewhere to stay :D

It is interesting they are having the world premiere in Scotland (one 't' there) - but only from my personal point of view that it is so close to me that attending is easy - assuming I can get a ticket!

The Edinburgh Film Festival is huge, and part of the still huger Edinburgh Festival, where the population of the city pretty much doubles for one month. It is a crazy time, and no fun to be a local (except from the increase in jobs). One year, when I still lived there, I was late almost every day for work. I just gave up the day a troop of penguins crossed the road in slow motion in front of the bus. That's people dressed as penguins. They close the high street completely, and everything is just chaos and madness. An inordinate amount of English university students who want to be actors and Americans who want to go to the theatre drink all the bars dry and talk in incredibly loud and heavily accented voices and kiss all the time.

The film festival is one of the best bits. They often show films two or three times if demand is high. Last year, I saw a screening (which was the second or third due to demand) of the Metallica film 'Some Kind of Monster' - it was one of the weirdest queues for a film I've ever seen, and so funny.

Other big previews are often held too - one year Rushmore was the big one. There's always a lot of good European stuff too - the programme is usually excellent, often a bit quirky. Seems like the perfect place for 'Serenity'...

Sorry for the spelling checker!

Partly obsessiveness (is that spelt right?) and partly touchiness...

Here's another link, to a bio one of the best Scottish film reviewers (in my opinion, anyway) - check out what she has to say about the Edinburgh film festival:
http://scotland.ideasfactory.com/writing/features/feature3.html
She also has some interesting comments about working in Scotland. If you can find any of her film reviews online (try through the Glasgow Herald newspaper), they are usually quite good - she did a fantastic one recently panning Vera Drake.

Just recieved this from the cantstopthesignal.co.uk mailing list:

Quote:

[Serenity UK Screenings] Edinburgh Film Festival screening

Two, in fact, of the finished film. Joss at the first screening. In August.

Info and tickets: http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/movies/show/serenity/

Q&A with Joss.

Also, a documentary on Joss Whedon is screening.

Tickets go on sale Monday morning.

Screenings around the UK will follow shortly after.

Kev

So it looks good for other screenings. Note that edfilmfest.org.uk says tickets go on sale Friday and not Monday as it says in the email.

I'm now considering having a holiday in Scotland around the showings - assuming I can get tickets before the sell out.

Great Stuff,

I`ve secured a couple of days off, although I will be gutted if I can`t get tickets.

Thinking of driving up there but may just take a slow train.

I hope that everybody will be sinsible about purchasing tickets and not have the eBay debarcle happen in the UK.

If you get tickets and find you can not go, offer them up at the list price and not go through eBay - be a good Browncoat & not a profiteer (even if you only want to sell one ticket, it`s still profiteering off others)

Anyone seen signs of Pixel? there seams to be a few regulars who are miussing that would surely like to know about all this.

unfortunetely Petit_rhino is still up in the shetlands and I think may be leaving before the premier. she`s not easily contactable

I`m goingf to try my damdest to get tickets, but as it`s in the middle of a work day and I will be winging my way to Torquay it will be quite difficult (although not totally impoossible)

Darin (Zol.)

p.s. the problem after getting a ticket(s) is hotel or guesthouse accomodation - it`s not cheap and there`s bound to be quite a few places already booked up.

Oooh, this is exciting. Severely tempted to book tickets just on the off chance that things work out that allow me to go. I do know the odd person in Scotland that might let me crash at their place. That or take the "when in Rome" approach and just drink my way through the night.

Also of peripheral interest is the fact that Kinky Boots is also being shown at the festival, starring one Chiwetel Ejiofor. Certainly a change of pace for him and the film is currently scheduled to be opening oppposite Serenity in November.

Interestingly, the site has a "show me films like..." option, presumably to let you make random choices but still in genre. One of the films listed is Blade Runner. No, Serenity isn't linked to that one. Instead it is linked to 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Um...

Plus a little warning; the description of the movie gives spoilerish hints. Best just to go straight to booking. On July 15th. After I have booked. Yeah.

Cost of movie ticket : 7.50

Cost of return train ticket : 18.00, and >2.5hrs each way

Cost of hotel (1 night) : ~50.00?, if find someone to share?

That's a lot of money and effort for one film, but I am SO tempted. Hopefully all the movie tickets will have gone before I get one!

I am so excited about this! I am even online in the morning, just to make sure noone went and put the tickets on sale early... look, does everyone want to just hold off booking on Friday till I get my tickets? Just for an hour or so?!

Seriously, if anyone is thinking about coming up to Edinburgh for the event, accomodation costs should be factored in: the city and surrounding area are always fully booked for the festival - often years in advance. I work in tourism, and have heard stories about people showing up in Edinburgh, going to the tourist office looking for accomodation and being told the nearest hotel with rooms is in northern England. This is the biggest festival in Europe, if you count everything in it. Accomodation is probably still available (just), but prices could be high - all discounts are probably out, and anyone with a flat/room to lease for the month of August makes up for the enormous disruption to their city by charging extortionate prices. There are even landlords who specialise in renting accomodation just for the festival.

Incidentally, if Misters J. Whedon or N. Fillion or any of their close friends are looking for a place to crash, I can offer a sofa-bed :)
