While 'Firefly' goes Sci Fi, TNT is gunning for 'Wanted'

"Firefly": All you lovable misfits out there, the ones looking for kindred spirits on TV? Meet them this week aboard "Firefly." Sci Fi Channel has resurrected the canceled Fox series only a few of us saw but liked immediately back in 2002.

It seems the network plans to do right by this unusual but uncompromising space adventure, beginning with Part 1 of the original pilot, "Serenity," at 6 p.m. Friday. Part 1 repeats in tandem July 29, back to back at 6 and 7 p.m.; hourlong episodes more or less in the order filmed appear over the next 10 weeks.

Over-the-top sales of the series' DVD set and a big-screen version of the story due out in September probably account for its comeback to the small screen.

Rather than provide the standard synopsis - critics call it cowboys in space - let us tell you that what makes this show a delight is the storytelling (credit Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy... " and "Angel"), the humor and snappy dialogue (mostly Whedon again) and a talented cast that includes Nathan Fillion ("Blast From the Past," "Two Guys and a Girl"), Gina Torres ("Angel"), and Allen Tudyk ("A Knight's Tale"), among others. These mostly unfamiliar actors breathe life into nine characters, Robin Hoods on the fringes of society.

Friday night's opener speaks to Mal Reynolds' (Fillion's) loss of faith when his Browncoats are defeated in a galactic war, and he gathers about him like-minded souls to explore the farthest reaches of the galaxy. The focus here is more often narrow than broad, and life aboard Serenity is a lesson in how to create a close-knit family from friends and even associates with questionable intentions.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle. . . ."

SHINYSEVEN

It's not a full-scale article, but Time Out New York has TV reviews and this is its take on the Sci Fi showing:

For several months now, the trailer for Serenity, the big-screen continuation of this short-lived Joss Whedon space opera, has been baffling moviegoers with no memory of the series' ultra-brief 2002 run on Fox. Firefly died too soon, true, but its early demise also let star Nathan Fillion kick some serious ass on the final episodes of Buffy. Sci Fi welcomes the futuristic Western to its lineup with the first of what will no doubt be several hundred broadcasts of the terrific pilot, which Fox inexplicably chose to air as the series finale. Look for part two next week.

RICKKER

Just getting back from vacation I came across Firefly in this weeks Entertainment weekly in the TVguide section in the back. They give it an A. Have you seen how they rate stuff? They hardly ever give anything an A.
