So I've seen speculation around about Mal's family tragedy, and 'The Job' above gave my brain a further joggle. It's kinda soap operafyin', but...

A central terraformed planet suffers the worst possible disaster -- the terraformation fails abruptly. The entire planet is quickly becoming uninhabitable, and the call goes out for all available craft to help with the evacuation of the colonists.

Knowing the relatively small Serenity wouldn't make much difference in such an operation, Mal at first chooses to ignore the call. Silently pressured by Book's disapproval, and the announcement that there would be rewards, Mal changes his mind. The Serenity and her crew speed to join the rescue.

A group of officers, administrators, and family members stayed behind to organize the evacuation in an outlying community, and are now trapped by the worsening conditions. The weather and gravitic conditions are too dangerous for shuttle craft, and all the large Alliance ships available are not able to land on a planet. Unexpectedly, the Serenity becomes their only hope.

After a harrowing landing, the crew of the Serenity recover the forty or so victims, crowd them into the cargo bay, and fly (with some thrilling heroics) all to safety in orbit. Limping but triumphant, Serenity heads to dock with an Alliance cruiser to offload the rescuees.

Helping Simon with minor doctoring, River suddenly laughs and hugs an older woman dressed in Alliance black. Too busy with his medic duties, Simon can only watch with dismay as the chattering River drags the Alliance officer to the bridge.

The bridge is already crowded with Kaylee, Wash, Zoe, and Mal when River leads the woman in. Before anyone can do much more than blink, River joyously announces, "She's alive!"

Mal rolls his eyes and begins to apologize to the confused woman, Wash and Kaylee turn back to figuring out what Serenity needs to get fixed. Only Zoe seems to feel something significant is happening when she asks, "Who is alive, dear?"

River, as if to a slightly slow child, "Captain Malcolm Reynold's Mother, of course."

"Malcolm?"
"Maw?"

Who could play Mal's mom?
How did she end up an Alliance officer?
Why didn't she contact Mal after the war?
When is the next Browncoat Chronicles coming out?
LOL

Why wouldn't Mal recognize her?

Wouldn't Simon and River be in hiding? They meet with an Alliance cruiser and even have Alliance officers on board? Wouldn't they know Simon and River right away and send everyone (including Mal) into lockup and then the blue hands come and kill everyone?

Besides being much different looking after 7 years, what with the uniform, haircut, and all, I propose the dramatic moment simply for the drama. Certainly Mal wouldn't have expected to see his mother, long presumed dead. Perhaps in a moment he would have paused and said something on his own, but River wouldn't have waited, what with her nature and abilities.

As for her recognizing him, maybe she thought he was dead too, falsely reported dead in the Battle of Serenity Valley.

Simon and River don't hide all the time or from everybody. They must avoid ID scans that would match their faces or retinas or whatever to their warrants. Rescuing random people wouldn't require hiding, and even if a few of those turned out to be Alliance, would that stop Simon?

Anyone wanna fanfic this? feel free 8)

Sorry Wulfhawk, they don't hide from random people but if the Alliance was involved they would be. From what we've seen the Tams are pretty much like "Americas most wanted". Every Alliance ship is looking for them, what with new warrants always coming out "How did you know it was my birthday? (OOG)" and being on a Firefly class ship.

I believe you should think this out a little more before you start thinking about fanfic. Don't get me wrong, I love the fanfic but I also like to keep things proper in the 'verse and consistent with where Joss has lead us so far.

That of course, is just my opinion. What do other fans think?

I think I want to know where that quote came from.

And I’ve got to agree. I can't imagine Simon letting River near the Alliance. But maybe... If it meant saving lives, if Simon somehow knew there wouldn't be any indent scans, and if River couldn’t be left alone... he just might. I'm smelling alot of "if's" comming off this plan.
