SCI FI also began reruns of FOX's cancelled series Firefly at 7 p.m. "Serenity, Part 1" earned a solid 1.3 rating outside of primetime.

Not a great rating and less than what it did originally on FOX but a good rating considering it is not primetime, on cable, on a Friday night, and is reruns.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Nice catch, rklenseth! I'd been wondering how Firefly did in the ratings.

Yeah, not quite sure what to make of a 1.3 rating. I don't know enough about cable ratings in general and, more specifically, how SciFi shows usually rank to know if this is in line with expectations.

According to the article you linked, Firefly was behind the new episodes by about a million viewers.
SG-1: 2.1
Atlantis: 2.0
BSG: 2.0

Hopefully it will improve this Friday when they play the entire pilot episode. And I wish we knew how many of those 1.6 million viewers had never seen the show before.

* editted to add: Well, it looks like we did better than any of the cable news shows

America loves a winner!

Well, considering they did practically nothing to promote this show, and it only has 1 season to run with....

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have seen quite a few ads on Sci Fi this past weekend and all week so far promoting Firefly this Friday and the sneak peek of the trailer for the BDM. Hopefully these ads will bring some more viewers in this week.

1.3 versus the 2.1 that SG-1, 2.0 for SG Atlantis, & the 2.0 that BSG earned is not that bad when you think about it. SG1 is into it's 9th season now, and Ben Browder & Claudia Black drew in a lot of Farscapers. So the fact is only had a .8 better than Firefly is not that big a spread. BSG only drew .7 better and it is Sci Fi's acclaimed series.

I think we will be seeing an increase in the Firefly viewer #s. I'm thinking we'll rise again!

How do we know that a 1.3 rating translates to 1.6 million viewers? Was it written somewhere? In any case, that number is within the range I was thinking it would be. I hope it means that somewhere over a million Firefly virgins learned about the 'verse. If even half of them go see the movie, you've picked up three or four million bucks in film revenue. Not enough to guarantee a hit, but a step in the right direction.

Does anybody know what the viewing numbers were for the origianal showing? I know that it did better than Buffy and Angel, at least initially. I'm thinking it was between five and seven million viewers. Again, if we got half of those, that's over twenty million bucks, and we haven't even tapped the general public. Taking that into account, I can't see Serenity doing much worse than fifty million, not counting DVDs. It'll be interesting to see how close I am.

One thing, though. I watched the numbers at Amazon after the Sci-fi premiere and there wasn't much change. It jumped from 30 to 18 for one day and then moved into the mid-twenties. When you consider that sales went all the way to number two after the theater showings in June, that's not much. I'm beginning to think that June rise was mostly due to Browncoats buying more copies, not newbies running out to get the show.

Well, I'm not sure if it's true, but I heard that someone made a mistake on the west coast when they aired Serenity Part 1...

I don't have cable, but to the best of my knowledge it was aired at the same time as the east coast, which is to say, 4 pm. That will have definitly hurt viewership to everyone without Tivos who was just going to 'give firefly a try'...

Your cable system must be on the east coast feed, Comcast SF is showing it at 6:00p pt1/7:00p pt2.

Well, in Seattle, It was in the newspaper tv section as being on at 7:00, but when I tuned in, it wasn't on. It wqs an ep of BG, IIRC. If Firefly aired at 3:00, or 4:00, it wasn't announced. I was going to complain to my local network. I think subtantially fewer people saw it on the west coast in that case, which means the ratings could have been even higher.

Bobster, where are you posting from and where are you getting your scheduling info?

Matthew Wahoske's page is a great ratings resource (also Buffy and Angel if you dig around):

I'm in Anaheim, CA and my satellite is courtesy of Dish Network.

I've noticed analomolies like this before (Daily Show isn't on at 11:00, but earlier, for example). If it wasn't for my DVR, this kind of thing of would really bother me...

Of course, it could be driving down Firefly ratings (and making people like us look like idiots when we try to tell people about it!)
