SPOILERS below - do not read if you want to stay unspoiled for "Serenity":

This thought just occured to me: In "Bushwhacked", Mal theorizes that the surviving crewman turned into a Reaver because his mind couldn't handle what he had seen and the only way to deal was to become like them.

We know from the BDM that the Reavers exist because of a drug that the Alliance gave to the population of Miranda, which caused a small percentage of the people to become savage cannibals.

WHAT IF - this chemical stays in the bloodstream and can be transmitted (say, through a bite) and convert others into Reavers? Maybe the Reavers can sense who will be affected, or maybe they keep their victims alive long enough to see which ones will change. (This would explain the raping and torture - they can't control their violent impulses, but have enough control to not kill their potential recruits.)

What do y'all think?

I think that is a fair comment, and because ...

Reavers don`t leave people behind to tell the tails I think the theory is sound, the zombie effect

Only one slight flaw, the wounds the BDH receive, could they not get affected by ll that reaver blood, dirty weapons and stuff like that? unless you speculate that the alliance had fixed the reaver disease and the BDH are immune, because they have visited one of the planets wich has had the cure dispersed throughout the atmosphere?

I saw the screening in March, so things may be a little fuzzy now, but next month I may get to see it again (only a complete movie not a test screening hopefully)

Don't read below unless you have seen the movie. By highlighting the text below you agree under punishment of law to have met above stated requirements.

I don't really see that being the case. I think we have one supply of Reavers in the verse and that's all there are. The alliance is probably hoping to wait them out and then go back to Miranda to clean up and start again. Otherwise they'd attack and kill all the Reavers to cover up the incident.

Since only a small percentage of the population are "Reaverized" by the drug, maybe all of our heroes were immune, or didn't get any/enough of the chemical in their bloodstreams?

with everyone dead there is no one to continue pumping the chemicals in the atmo...so it is safe now,
except for the whole getting past the Reavers problem.
the Reavers themselves are permanently damaged and can't get better.

Regarding the original question:
I just think Mal was wrong, he was theorizing what makes someone a Reaver and he was wrong...
he might have been right about this specific guy going insane (that syndrom where you end up identifying with your attackers and wanting to be like them)
but Mal doesn't always have to be right about everything...

and too bad this thread ended up in the wrong forum....
it is an interesting discussion.

Not sure why this thread is in Buffyverse, but I'm willing to play along...

Rewatch BUSHWHACKED again. At the part where Mal is explaining how a lone survivor of a Reaver attack goes from shellshocked victim to Reaver-in-training, my main question is..'How does Mal know ?' I mean, ..how can he possibly even suggest an idea? When being interviewed by Harken, Mal says, " ..a man comes up against that kind of will, I suspect, is to become it. " Before I saw the BDM, I was under the impression that Mal MIGHT know, and was simply leading on with the 'I suspect' line. Of course Mal doesn't know, but he's picked up a good amount of info on Reaves in his travels.

Then there's Book. Seems even he agrees w/ the consensus that Reavers were men who went mad because they ventured too far out, or some such nonsense. Did Book know about Miranda and that's what pushed him to become a Shepard? Or was this something even more terrible than even he had seen? It's clear that Book was at one time an Operative, or at the very least knew their M.O.,something about their tactics and training. And Book knew more about River than he lead on, or knew what the Alliance would do to get her back. But that's another story

Either way, it seems both Mal and Book didn't KNOW as much, but merely suspected.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Not a movie spoiler, just a bit of the old Book theorizing:
I'm still holding that Book was a General of the Battle of Serenity, and just as all the pain & death turned Mal bitter and against God,
it made Book turn against the Military and embrace God....
JMPO
(I'm probably wrong)

This movie doesn't tell us anything about Book's past, but I'm hoping for his back story in the sequel!
