Well folks, it might just be happening again...

Meanwhile, part two of the Firefly premiere earned a 1.2 household rating outside of primetime, down one-tenth of a point from the previous week.

Bummer...

Though Stargate SG-1 dropped a tenth of a point from last week as well. So maybe it's not statistically significant?

I saw the Gateworld articles... but does anyone know what the ratings for Serenity Part One on July 29th were (the 6PM repeat)?

What DON'T people like about it? I mean seriously. What is there to dislike that would put so many people in a not-watching state? Ratings go down? Not shiny! I am unhappy.

I had a friend I loaned the DVDs to almost turn off the pilot because the first half was slow. And I could understand if you watched just the first half on TV and weren't incredibly intrigued by who was in the box, then you might not tune in the next week.

However, as suggested above, this might not even be statistically significant, if a handful of people with Neilsen boxes all had family obligations when Firefly was on this week, it explains the ratings drop. So I'd say there's nothing to get worried about yet.

In fact, with the Serenity exclusives and features showing during Firefly from now on, maybe ratings will go up...

I must add it starts at 6:00. Most folk don't start "watching TV" till 7:00 & 8:00. At 6 most people are still getting home from work, and in some cases (so not here) watching the news. I barely get in the door to catch Firefly on Sci-fi.

When did Firefly start airing on SciFi? I cought it friday, and saw both episodes and remembered why I loved it when it was on Fox. I'd like to watch all the episodes, and will get the DVDs eventually.

Are they on every friday at 6 then?

Here in California they air at 7:00pm. Last week they started at 6pm to rerun the first half of the pilot (they'd aired it at 7 the preceding week) and then ran the second half of the pilot in the regularly scheduled slot. Tomorrow, we're getting The Train Job at 7.

Hey, It's September 20, 2002 all over again!!!

It doesn't air at 7:00 in all of California. Depends on your cable/satellite service. Mine shows it 4:00, which can't be helping!

Anyhow, wouldn't worry much about the drop-off.

There was an essay in Finding Serenity (I forget which one) that suggested such a thing might be true. Now, before you lynch me, I realize the pilot is very essential to enjoying Firefly, however, having it be an hour long might have been the way to go. Might be an interesting project to "cut" the pilot down to an hour and retain all the relevant story arcs.

No lynch mob here. Long, long ago on a post far, far away I made a similar suggestion. The casts should be coming off any month now.

People should consider that this is a very ssslllooooooowwww time of the year for most industries and businesses (unless they have a waterslide or a large geological anomaly). This time every year we start to freak thinking our business is dieing and then we remember - people are on vacation, numbers are just normally down. Same may be true for TV. I'm not not sure what their seasons are but I know from what our usual tv habits are that there's just less on right now and so we're watching A LOT less in general.

Two drops in consecutive weeks. Again, source material here.
