i think that if the series lasted longer, zoe and wash should have had a baby. i know that seems strange since they live a pretty complicated and busy life but it would seem interesting. and zoe did mention somting about kids on "heart of gold". i also think they would make very good parents.

Perhaps they will still have a child in one of the movies. :-)

Hmmm..If they do have a baby in the movies, I think it would just kind of...happen. Not that it wouldn't be important, or that there wouldn't be celebration (and worry) over it, just that it would be a natural part of their lives, and people would adjust. Including the captain, even though he doesn't like things to get complicated. Actually, I think that would be a perfect addition to the third movie.
(Or the fourth...?)

a baby is so NOT what we'd need to see on "Firefly".
yes, she did mention wanting to have a baby someday.
but speaking practically, i don't think that would have ever happened. unless the zoe character was going to be written out of the show.
just my humble opine.

Yeah, I think I agree with Tallgrrl (whatever my own fanfic might choose to do) …

A baby might have been interesting for one episode – say like a baby gets left in a basket at the cargo bay door, to be found by River and Kaylee who want to take it in and Mal who has to find the child’s real parents (hey that ain’t a bad plot line) – but a baby born to one of the crew members could get annoying.

Kids, by their very nature, tend to hang around and would have to be built into every plot line in a kinda “hey we’re having a big damn gunfight… hang-on! Who’s lookin’ after the baby?” type way which surely couldn’t add to the show …

America loves a winner!

It would so remind me of ANGEL. What with Baby Conner and then Jasmine .....whoah. That would be just too weird.

Good point!

And look how they got round the "having a baby grow up on the show" conundrum in Angel - that's right! Have it brought up in an alternate dimension where time goes oh so much faster! I hear that happens a lot!!

Exactly. TV writers know what a pain in the neck babies are because of the reasons explained above. You can't do anything without having to explain who's minding the baby. I LOVE LUCY had the always available Mrs. Trumble so Lucy could have her misadventures without being a negligent mother. Lorne served the same function on ANGEL until Connor went to Quor'toth (sp?).

They also suddenly aged the baby on FAMILY TIES a few years just so they wouldn't be anchored down. Maybe he went to Quor'toth too. Just not for as long.

A baby for Zoe and Wash could be a little different because while Wash is piloting and Zoe is off shooting, there are a many other characters who can be the answer to the question "Who's watching the baby?" We've got a total sweetheart who would just love to watch little Hoban, Jr. in Kaylee. Inara too is caring and sensitive. You've got a Shepard and a doctor, too. And there'd probably be a scene or two where Jayne picks it up and says "Boogedy, Boogedy, Boogedy" to make it laugh. Just to make us laugh.

But still, unless the show is about children, babies just get in the way. Especially when you have a setting like SERENITY.

Obviously, Connor was planned (not by Darla and Angel but by the creators). But to me it felt like the show was sidetracked even when Connor was a teenager. And they dumped his ass after a season and a half.

Sidethought: Even though Buffy must've been told that Angel had a kid, I sure would've liked to have seen her face when she found out. And it seems to me it would have come up during their scene in the season finale of BUFFY. 'Cause ANGEL would be all pissed about Buffy and Spike and then BUFFY could have played the Darla card.
And then Angel would say "Yeah but I went to a dark place." And then Buffy would say "So did I!" And then Angel would say "But mine was written so much better."

At least that's the way I imagine it.

Thanks for the compliment. I just read your blog. Welcome back. How was "deepest, darkest France"? I thought in France you got four weeks vacation.

All joking aside, I would have liked a "Buffy finds out about Connor" scene. That was a real missed opportunity. But she would have had to have found out before the "Great Connor Memory Wipe of 2003" at the end of Season 4 of ANGEL (Season 7 of BUFFY). So her finding out would have lost its resonance. But still, I would've liked to have seen her reaction.

Deepest darkest France was full of my sister's children, so not superb, but at least there was very, VERY cheap wine and crepes by the dozen ...

They do get 4 weeks in France but sadly as a Britisher visiting France, I didn't ...

Am pretty pelased that I came back when I did considering the Serenity Preview tickets went on sale that same day! Phew!

Reckon the Bufster wouldn't have been all that understanding - If you look at her reactions to past boyfriend issues ...

Batmarlowe makes me think of BatManuel (The Tick) ... is it supposed to?

Over here in England we have a very long running Soap Opera called "Coronation Street". Many years ago, one of the couples had a little girl called Tracey (Or "Tracey, love" said in a very broad Northern accent).

One day "Tracey, love" went upstairs to do her homework, and she stayed up there for many years. Her parents would still refer to her, and they used to call up the stairs "Tracey, love, it's time for your tea", or "Tracey, love, are you nearly ready for school?", but we didn't see her.

Many years later, when she became potentially interesting from the soap's plot point of view, and in an attempt to win a younger audience, she did come downstairs.

I can't remember if it was the same actress now grown up, or whether it was a new actress.

But that could be a way to deal with the baby for a few years if necessary, just bring it out every so often.

Whatdya think?

I'm trying to remember, seems to me that after the whole Conner arc on Ats Joss said something about NO MORE BABIES in any of his shows.
But at the same time Gina Torres said in an interview once that she had warned Joss that a pregnancy might happen...
So it could be that JW was laying down some foreshadowing in case one of his stars got knocked up...but I doubt if it was something he was dying to deal with.

No, I don't think Buffy wouldn't have been all that understanding. That's what would've made it so much fun. But if she saw Baby Connor then she would have gotten all gooey and it would have made her think that this was something she and Angel could have had together. And then it would be all sad and poignant. The whole thing would have just been a goldmine for character stuff.

No, Batmarlowe has nothing to do with Batmanuel.

And Britchick, the thing about CORONATION STREET is that they know it will run forever so that they could bring Tracey, love down when she was sixteen (and she could promise her Davy Jones fan club that Davy himself would come to one of their fundraisers) They could stash babies all over the place on that show. I'm assuming C Street has dozens and dozens of characters and many different locales. SERENITY has only nine and they're confined to a small space. Where would they stash Wash and Zoe's baby so there would be a quasi-valid excuse for it to be offscreen? Maybe they could make it a real "crybaby" and use it to fake out Alliance ships.

Embers, if Gina and Larry want to have a baby, they could have it between sequels. Or like Charisma, Gina could be pregnant onscreen and then give birth to Jasmine, who would reeeeeally look like her mother.

Embarassingly enough despite being from good ol' Blighty I have never watched an entire episode of Corry ... However, the Archers (the long running radio soap about everyday country folk: "Eddy, get the cows in") does exactly the same thing on a regular basis with characters who are too young or old to be interesting ...

I don't think its embarrassing. I stopped watching Coronation Street myself about ten years ago when it started to get like Eastenders (which I also do not watch).

Funnily enough, I was going to mention characters in the Archers as well (like Christine, who only appeared in person in the last few years), and Pru (is it Pru? Or do I mean Freda Fry? I'm getting confused myself now) who I don't think has actually appeared yet despite being around forever.

But it's easier to hide these characters on a radio show, especially one the size of Ambridge :))

Yes it must be quite galling to be the disembodied presence of Freda Fry – cooking in the Bull most nights and talking to the other characters and yet, mysteriously leaving rooms just before a scene is aired …
