Hello y'all. I've been watching the Farscape reruns on Sci-Fi Channel, when I came to a realization. Every science fiction-based show ever made has had one thing in common: usually, the first and maybe second and third seasons were a "hit-or-miss" affair, meaning that either a single ep could be considered good or so-so (or, perhaps, excellent or crappy). The original Outer Limits (yes, I've been around that long!), Star Trek the Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, X-Files, Stargate SG-1, and yes, Farscape, all had good eps mixed with crappy eps. It wasn't until the second or third seasons that most if not all of the eps for these shows really started to show their true brilliance. So, now we have Firefly, and only 12-13 episodes to watch. And what do we see in only half a season? Some of the best eps ever in science fiction, in its FIRST season, literally not one weak show in the bunch, including great acting, great chemistry between the actors, great special effects, and last but not least, some of the best writing in any genre. I also believe that all of these elements were getting better as the season progressed. It's no wonder that we desperately want our show back, hoping that it hasn't skipped a beat. Let's continue to also hope that Firefly will be given a second chance, somewhere.

I couldn't agree with you more. I know that doesn't make for a very interesting reply but what you say is the absolute truth. I don't think any sci-fi show in recent memory has had such consistency on so many levels right out of the gate. I just finished watching OIS again. I'm watching them in sequence at an ep. every few days and they all shine in one way or another. It boggles the mind that anything this creatively successful should not be able to find a nurturing environment at one of the studios. All of us here come back repeatedly in the hope that this grand mistake will be corrected though I know how rarely that happens. My new hope is that this show is a glimpse of the things to come from a fantastic writer who gathers great talent around him. Joss Whedon may be the great white hope for sci-fi on TV. I somehow doubt he will stop any time soon.

I've also tried to remember when or if any sci-fi show in its first season received all this attention, almost all positive, from critics and viewers alike, plus also receiving a nomination (Hugo?). Not to mention the fact that any show that showed so much promise like Firefly was given at LEAST a full year to prove its worth, based on positive reviews from everybody. I keep thinking about X-Files or NextGen as primary examples.
How frustrating!!
