Nihao pard'ners,

Some news you might be interested in. With the changes brought upon the Firefly Shindig Friday night, the costume contest will no longer be part of the shindig. The costume contest will instead be held at 8:30pm Friday (Sept 2nd) in the Marriot at the SEBC Fantable. The judging will consist of Reannaremick and myself.

Their will be two divisions "Screen Accurate" and "Original Designs". The grand prize for each category will be a 1ft x 1ft Browncoat Flag. A third flag will be awarded to a "Fan Favorite". Runner-up prizes are being discussed though those are contingent on enough competitors showing up.

The contest should be over and give you more than enough time to get to the Shindig that starts at 11:30.
Costumes are not required for the Shindig, but are encouraged. Recruiting costumers at the Shindig for the parade is also highly encouraged.

Don't forget the muster for the Parade group is between 8:45am and 8:55am by the Hyatt Bar area / by the escalators. Immediatly following the parade, Cosplay.com will be hosting a FREE open photoshoot which I encourage all participants to attend.

Also, Friday August 26, I will annouce the two highest donors, from the parade group, to the SEBC. Those two souls will have the choice to either help carry the parade banner or the large Browncoat Flag that is being donated to us. I will be bringing a paint pen; all parade participants will immortalize themselves by signing the back of the banner.

Finally here's the latest count. 34 confirmed marchers broken down to:

Blue Hands(s) 2
Browncoat(s) 2
Companion(s) 1
Inara 2
Jayne 2
Kaylee 5
Mal 2
River 2
Simon 2
Wash 2
YoSafBridge 1
Zoe 3
? 10
Total 34

C'mon let's see if we can break 40! Only 18 days left till Dragon-Con!

Clarifications

* The costume contest is not mandatory for members of the parade group. I simply thought the costumers in the parade would naturally be interested.

* The photoshoot by Cosplay.com. As it is hosted by cosplay.com groups originating from the forum are being given priority before groups that are not from cosplay.com Photos of individuals is contingent on time issues. Therefore I invite all photographers who would be willing to their time to record the parade group and individuals before, during, and after the parade. [Its still free, and really if your a costumer/cosplayer, you need to join cosplay.com its worth it and is totally free].

BTW,I am also working to get a photographer as well

The location will remain as the Marriot lobby after the parade.

Nihao my fellow Browncoats and other interested parties,

I am proud to annouce that Radegund, editor of the costume section of Browncoats.com, will be accompanying the parade group and taking photos of groups and individuals.

I am also very proud to annouce veteran photographer James (Frameshot of fotki) will be our "shooter" for the post-parade photo shoot for any and all Firefly/Serenity cosplayers (to occur during cosplay.com's as not to completely overwhelm the generous Eurobeat King). James has been covering Dragon-Con for years as well as many ATL area events (most recently the Rollergirl's Exhibition bout) and concerts. You can access his public archives here: http://public.fotki.com/FrameShot/ and his previous Dragon-Con photos here: http://public.fotki.com/FrameShot/conventions/dragon_con/

I'm fairly sure my wife and I are already on the list, but I was surprised to see so few Inara's and Mal's. I guess that Kaylee is just too cute!

It's true! No power in the 'verse is cuter!

I'll be there to provide some marchin' music:

Ballad of Serenity
Saffron's Wedding Dance
Ballad of Joss
Hero of Canton (if I can sing it without slipping into Ballad of Joss--Curse that sudden but inevitable parody!)
On the Drift
Big Damn Trilogy

That should take about twelve minutes; I hope no one in the parade group minds hearing some of the songs twice. :-)

Also, these songs are in the bunch-of-mudders-belting-it-out-loud tradition, so feel free to join in on any lyrics you know.

And I hope all of you will join us for the Bedlam Bards concert at the Art Crawl on Saturday night from 8 to 10 pm in the Yukon room at the Marriott. We'll sing about outlaws, pirates, lost love, dragons, and possibly illicit sexual practices. :-)

And the rumors that someone at the show will know where to find the free food are totally false. The ducks fly at midnight.

MRSEMBASSY

If you run out of music, my 7-year-old came up with a great marching chant the other day ... God knows where he picked it up, but he started doing the lyrics to "Ballad of Serenity" as a military march, e.g.,

Take my love, take my land
(take my love, take my land)
Take me where I cannot stand
(take me where I cannot stand)
I don't care, I'm still free
(I don't care, I'm still free)
You can't take the sky from me
(You can't take the sky from me)

Sound off
(1, 2)
Sound off
(3, 4)
We're Serenity's Browncoats.
(BROWNCOATS!)

The advantage to this is you don't have to know how to sing. Anybody can echo a chant!

As the organizer of the parade group, I reserve the right to gag people if the singing gets too bad (depends on how hung over I am Friday night).

btw those chants are more accurately cadences or "jodies" in military slang. I'm still trying to think of a Browncoat (the soldiers not the fans) one to shout out during the parade.

I suppose this question falls under the rest of the con too, and not just the parade, but what are everyone's experiences when it comes to prop guns for the costumes? Is there a hassle for carrying them or is the con security cool with it?

We purchased an old western revolver with holster for myself and a shotgun like rifle for the wife, but they are both simply cap guns, they just look more realistic.

Was anyone else allowed to carry thier last year?

LOL--I like that. I can hear it being done to the traditional military cadence. I'll add that to the list. The second verse fits also. This'll be fun.

Oh, TechieCL, where's your sense of adventure and cameraderie? Just drink lots of water and take two tylenol *before* you crash.

We're not shooting for four-part harmony, and I doubt anyone will want to sing the whole time. (Even I don't. That's why I'm including some instrumentals and that cadence Mrs. Embassy suggested.) But I want Browncoats to feel welcome to join in, especially on "the creator of Firefly, the man they call Josssssssssssssssssssss!"

As for gagging me--don't worry; I'm a professional.

Offical Dragon-Con policy dictates
* All guns must be non-functional props, replicas, or toys
* They must be made unable to fire any type of projectile
* They must have an orange safety tip if realistic looking
*No caps are to be used with cap guns.
* I believe they may be subject to being zipped tied into holsters etc

HOWEVER in my experiance I have had no trouble with any gun props at Dragon-con. I had my airsoft g-36 with me all last year and only had to put it away to enter the con suite to get some food.

Don't do anything stupid or reckless and should be fine.

Oh and Cedric, notice the tongue emoticon in the post and you can determine how serious I am about the statement that followed.

Very good, thats what I needed to hear. I got my wife a nice prop rifle and myself a big ruttin revolver with a side holster and just wanted to make sure that we could wear them. We wouldnt even take them from thier holsters while at the con, they are there just for the costume.

Don't worry about it. If you look at Dragon-con pics there's plenty of costumers armed to the teeth and out of their holsters.

Oh, I know you're just joshing; I was just joshing back. We both had lots of requisite smilies to indicate it.

And I just love the vomiting emoticon, so I'm going to use it now, just for fun:

Lookin' forward to the parade and all the rest of Dragon*Con.
