At the Texas-wide Shindig, my wife picked up a promotional CD with four tracks from the movie soundtrack. (I believe they're the same four that are available online.)

The music is shiny, but hearing it got me to wondering if anyone out there knows why Greg Edmondson (the composer for the TV show) didn't do the music for the movie. Has anyone commented on that?

Do you know where the tracks from the movie are online? I didn't see them in the AV room on the Universal boards.

If I recall correctly, Universal was a bit antsy at first about Joss bringing his whole crew in for the movie - they wanted at least parts of the crew to be tried & tested already. One of "their" people that they wanted used was the composer.

But since he (the original composer) ended up getting replaced anyway, I'm not sure why Greg didn't get a shot then.

I've heard the interview Greg gave on The Signal, and the man is still smitten with the show.

I'm still totally smitten with the music he did for it. Not that the Serenity music is going to suck--but I was slightly alarmed when I heard the horns in the track called "Serenity." Horns always meant Allliance in Edmondson's soundtrack.

As much as I'd love Greg, Greg to me represents Firefly, not Serenity. Serenity itself is more epic than the series and I think the music they have for the BDM is perfect in catching that 'We shall rise again!' vibe.

More epic... possibly. I'm not going to spread spoilers but "epic" could be the wrong term if the rumours I've heard regarding events that take place in Serenity are true... and if they are, then how do those rumours fit with the "3 movie deal" we keep hearing about?

The Serenity music is good but is lacking something the Firefly music had.

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Universal wanted a composer with a more bankable name, though I'm not sure why David Newman was selected considering I can't recall anything else he's done. (Then again, did he compose the Galazy Quest music?)

Even so, Greg Edmondson, as great as his music for the show was, isn't a big name, which is what they wanted. Still, I don't know if he fell out with Joss after Buffy but Christophe Beck is now considered a big name in the movie business (he's certainly contributed to a fair few recently), I wonder why he wasn't selected
