SHINYMONKEY

Hi, Kids! My name is Preston Postle, and I've taken the responsibility of distributing a stack of free passes to a special sneak preview of the movie "Serenity," which will be shown next Wednesday, August 31, at 7:30 pm at the Cleveland Cinemas Shaker Square.

THE SCOOP: I am supposed to get 75 of these naughty monkeys, and each pass admits two people. IF YOU CAN DEFINITELY MAKE IT TO THIS SCREENING, you may request passes from me at the e-mail address serfmonkey@ameritech.net. You must give me a full name with your request so I can check you off at the movie theater. I will keep on fulfilling requests on a first-come, first-serve basis until all the tickets are gone.

THE LOCATION: The screening will take place on Wednesday, August 31, at the Shaker Square Cinemas, 13116 Shaker Square, Cleveland, OH 44120. Make sure to MapQuest directions in advance so you know where you're going!

HOW TO GET YOUR TICKETS: I will send you a confirmation e-mail if I still have passes available and can honor your request. Because time is so short, I will probably have to distribute these outside the theater by checking names off a list. I'll get there as early as I can -- around 5:00 or so. Let's say that I will be a bearded bloke, about 6'3", wearing an Indiana Jones hat and a Blue Sun T-shirt. Probably I will be surrounded by Browncoats! Please note that I will not jeopardize my own viewing of the movie by having to wait for latecomers. If you don't arrive at the theater well before showtime, I WILL dump your ticket on the nearest warm body and bolt for the theater.

DISCLAIMER: The original e-mail which I received from "UP Field Intern (NBC Universal)" FieldIntern@nbcuni.com states "each pass admits two people on a first come first served basis -- admission is not guaranteed." I don't know what this means or what our odds are of being turned away at the door. I'm just a chump who didn't ask for this task of distributing tickets, so please don't hold me responsible in case of hoax, disappointment, or random events in the 'verse.

-admission is not guaranteed-

I used to work as an intern in college distributing movie passes for Warner Bros. Basically, what they do is if a theatre seats 300 people they will give out enough passes to get in around 600 - 900 people dependeing on the movie. Typically only about 30 - 40% of the people they give passes to ever show up at the theatre. So since they don't want to show the movie to an empty theatre, they give out more passes then seats to ensure that it fills up.

-Which does lead to some ANGRY people being turned away at the door!

My suggestion is to arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes early to make sure you get a seat!

I hope that answers your question!

Hi, as a theater manager who deals with three to four sneak previews each week, I can confirm that they pass out more tickets than the theater can hold. They will tell the theater that they want a "500 seat theater" then pass out 1000 tickets. If you are one of the people that gets the tickets and you don't get in, please, please, PLEASE do not go and yell at the theater manager and start swearing and say you will never go back to that theater again. The movie theater has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the sneak preview - they just rent the theater out to the film studio. All of the passes say something along the lines of "seating is limited, please arrive early. pass does not guarantee a seat. theater is purposely overbooked to insure a full house. movie theater is not responsible for overbooking." Even still, you wouldnt believe the way some people act when they get turned away. A movie like Serenity, where you will have a large fan base, just makes it that much worse because the people there are REALLY going to want to see it.

Most sneak previews at our theater start at 7:30, and people start lining up around 6:00. I would recommend getting there at least an hour early just to be on the safe side. Even if you arrive half an hour early, it is still first-come, first-served seating, so you could end up in the very front row, or not sitting next to your friends.

Just a friendly heads up and an appeal from every theater manager everywhere who has had to deal with overbooked sneak previews.
