Are you willing to help provide quotes for a forthcoming book on Intelligence in Popular Media? Fans' thoughts are requested regarding Firefly's "sexy nerd" characters.

For more information, see http://www.livejournal.com/users/eldritchhobbit/2005/07/25/.

Many thanks!

Well, the only thing I can think to say is that Firefly fans are sexy nerds... My favorite kind of nerd, and also my favorite kind of sexy. ;)

Amen to that! I have always been partial to geeks and nerds, and I must admit that I love this fandom in part because of the many new friends and lots of sweet, intelligent, funny, geeky guys that hang out here. I just wish more of them lived close by... ;)

And to be at lease partially on-topic - I do think that Wash and Simon's geek-y qualities are a big part of the reason I find both of them so sexy. It just makes them seem real, accessible, obtainable (kind of).

I definitely need to get working on that geek-themed dating service idea a few of us came up with recently...

After seeing pics of some of the Firefly fans, I can truthfully say, "Those are some of the sexest nerds I've ever seen!"...

Oh, you mean the nerdy CHARACTERS. In that case, the only nerd in this show is Simon because he dosen't quite fit in with everyone since he is too proper and straight-laced. Plus he's inteligent enough to make Jayne jealous and therefore gets teased by "Jayne the Jock". But as Simon starts relaxing and becomes a part of the crew, Jayne gains (some) respect for him, and his teasing becomes less sadistic.

The only one I could think of was Kaylee. She is so into engines... Think of her at the party in Shindig--she doesn't fit in, but she gains some attention from some awkward young men and older folk when she starts talking enthusiastically, knowledgeably, and in detail about ships. Total geek.

...but yeah, I guess Simon is, too. Or at least a nerd, if you want to make the distinction (vy. intelligent, socially awkward, but not obsessive about his subject of interest).

Early: Where'd she go?

Simon: I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship, don't look at me --
