DARKJESTER

I'd just like to take a moment and say thanks to everyone for their kind words and sentiments about the death of Jenna (my son's sister and my former step-daughter). [We need to come up with a better description of that relationship. Saying "ex step-daughter" doesn't cut it.] I spent the last week in South Carolina for the funeral, and got back late Saturday night.

Unfortunately, my son is too much like me for his own good, and is holding in his grief, thinking that no-one wants to be bothered by his tears. I've learned over the years how unhealthy that is, but he is still too young. TELLING him wasn't doing it, so...... I'm going to have to show him, by being there for him.

Tomorrow morning I'm giving notice to the place I've worked for the last 12 years, and in three weeks I'll be moved down to South Carolina. I have an apartment picked out. My ex and her boyfriend have both offered to get me jobs where they work, I have a good bit of training in Inventory Control, and former bosses that will give me high recommendations. I'm not SCARED about finding a job, but still....

However, the North Carolina Big Damn Premiere Party is only a week after the move, so I'll be able to make it! I'll be calling to check on a hotel room tomorrow, and I look forward to bringing my son to meet a bunch of great folks (otherwise known as Browncoats), see a REALLY good movie, and having a great time at the Ren Faire on Saturday.

Thanks again everyone. You really are the shiniest webgroup a guy could ask for!

I feel for you I really do, for reasons I don't wish to post.

May I suggest someone you cared about a great deal?
It may seem flipant but I never thought official relationships never say it...
Its how you feel that counts...

When my grandmother died it was difficult, I am like you and your son (based on what you say) in so much that I don't want to make a scene by showing *ahem* emotion *ahem*.
My grandmother died two years ago and I can't say I've really come to terms with it yet...
I keep expecting her to appear some where, I keep pushing the thought that shes really not there to the back of my mind.
Basically what I'm saying is I hope you get through this difficult time, and that we will all be there for you...

Q: What do you have when you are holding two little green balls in your hand.
A: Kermit's undivided attention.

You are such a great dad for moving to be closer to your son at this time.
You are also very lucky to have a decent relationship with your ex. You all sounds like people worth knowing, and I'm very happy you can be there for each other in this time.

I have a story to tell you about last Wednesday's press screening in NYC. I man came up to me in line and asked what the big crowd was about. I did my shameless plug for the movie and he said, hummmm....that sounds a lot like the TV show called Firefly! Well needless to say, I explained that we had extra free tickets and to get in line to see the movie. He called his wife on the cell phone and saw the film. Afterwards I went up to him and his wife to get their reaction. They could not stop talking about it! They loved it! They never expected the movie to be that good. The husband explained to me that they had recently lost their child to a a childhood disease (don't remember what it was.) He said how much he and his wife needed this movie. For two hours, he said, he and his wife forgot that they had lost their only child. "Yep. It was that good!" he said.

(Thank God it was dark so he couldn't see my tears.)

DarkJester. on another thread we were talking about what real heroes actually do.
I guess you fit into that catagory.

If you don't believe me, ask your son in a decade, or so.

Best of luck in SC Chrisisall

DJ,

Damn, but you are so doing the right things, for what my mere opinion is worth. Getting your son out there, and yourself, to participate in one of Life's joyful activities, is a terrific and strong move. I admire your strength as shown by your willingness to take positive measures.

Looking forward to meeting ya both in Raleigh.

I agree, someone you care about, no other terms are necessary. When I speak of family I always leave out the steps, halves, exes, and in-laws. Once they’re part of the fam…they’re always part of the fam.

Good luck with the move. You’re a brave loving man. Chris is right: you are a hero.

See you soon.

I think you are entitled to simply call her your daughter, there is no reason to create a distance in the relationship.
I am so glad you are going to be there for your son,
I've lost a sister and a brother,
and I don't think I'll ever 'get over it',
you son will be grateful all his life for a closer relationship with you and your help in easing this loss for him.

I'm sure you'll find support for finding a new job and a good place to live.
This is really the right thing to do.

And I hope you'll allow all the Browncoats to remain a part of your life!

DJ. . .

If you have trouble finding a room in Raleigh, you can share mine, and I would invite you to crash at my home after the premiere and be my guest in attending the Carolina Renaissance Festival the Saturday and Sunday immediately following the BDM. (Oct 1 and 2). Again, I will have a few hotel rooms at my disposal, and there will be some space, bed, couch or floor for you there.

I wish I could offer more, but I hope you will consider the offer I have made.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

My hat's off to you DarkJester. I have no doubt you will be just fine in South Carolina, and your son will benefit from having you close by.

Sending out well wishes and prayers to you both fellow browncoat.

Where in South Carolina are you headed if I might ask? My wife is from Columbia & has friends & family in that area if you need anything.

You so have yourself and your priorities together. Your devotion to your son's well-being is an inspiration and ... I just don't know how I could pile enough superlatives onto the wonderful thing you're doing. All the best!

You loved her and still love her as your daughter. This makes her your daughter. There are no 'steps' and 'former' in love.

May you and yours find peace. May your love keep you strong.

DJ, i echo all the wonderful things said here. you truly are doing a great thing! best of luck down there, sounds like you have a huge support base, which is terrific. i am going to count you among my personal heroes.

on another note, i just want to comment on how great it is to see such an outpouring of support and help from everyone here--some even willing to open up thier homes and families to, essentially, a stranger is truly humbling. This speaks to the character of us browncoats; kudos, guys, kudos.
