Thats true, but if the reactor and the drive chamber are one sealed unit the drive unit will have to spin while the reactor is spinning.

Of course the reaction chamber might be kept 'hot' while not in use.
Or maybe even it keeps burning at all times to give (very) gradual acceleration, just not a hard burn?

Exactly.

Even if the catalyst stays in the catalyzers, there must be two or more substances reacting to form a third. What are they?

i dont think that gradual accelleration would be nessicary. they are already getting there at a set speed; no need to waste more feul than they have to. plus, they dont need to simulate gravity with continuous acceleration as they already have artificial gravity.

as for it being a single sealed unit--DOH! im a moron. thanks for pointing that out.

I don't know, because those are called catylisers doesn't mean they really are, do you see? They could be injectors that put the fusion plasma and the reaction mass (radion) in to the reaction chamber, there by kick starting the drive reaction...

could be. or perhaps Joss just picked a cool sounding word for "engine part you cant live without"

As I said they could be using the Plasma for generating power, you can do lots of things with heat. Also they might keep Plasma running through the system so the metal parts stay at a warm temperature otherwise the system would cool due to the coldness of space and when the hot plasma hits it there could be a structural failure.

Its possible that the Catalyzes aren’t involved in the Fusion Reaction but are part of a sub-system that aids it in some way.

Okay I'll do a bit of summising before I go to bed (its nearly 3AM here and I got work...)
(This should really get written down somewhere more permenant when we're done too):

Power is generated by a Tokamak Fusion Torus. When Serenity makes a hard burn some of the fusion plasma is siphoned off and injected into the drive core along with a certain amount of Radion as drive reaction mass.
The two mix in the reaction chamber, in an explosive reaction thats also accelerated with magnetic fields and shot out the back of the ship to produce a massive amount of thrust.

The entire assembly is kept spinning in order to generate a rotating magnetic field and prevent drive plasma from interacting with the substance of the ship.

Hows that?

And now I gotta go to bed...

Both good points, but the plasma would have to be prevented from interacting with the any of the ships parts with magnetic fields. So would there be any substantial heating?

Its fairly likely that there are a whole heap of subsystems involved with running the engine/powerplant also.

There probably are lots of things like exhaust vents that have the minimum of shielding. Also its possible that the Mag Field prevents the plasma from touching the metal casing but there still would be lots of heat in the area that needs to be radiated.

Ya'll are just great!

Kayleerulesall, I am proud to be in Texas with another Browncoat like you. If you hit the lottery and start this project (house in suburbia, flying brick, either way), please let me know. I fell into an opportunity to work at Bigelow Aerospace as a systems engineer (check out bigelowaerospace.com) and we're trying to start the private space station business -- make it possible for Mr. Niska to have his skyplex.

Wow, cooporate space stations, brilliant idea!
Although would that mean they would be unrestricted by any local laws for any experiments they do in space ?

By the time the exhaust is expelled it probably is a lot cooler than when the plasma enters the reaction chamber.
But your right there probably is a lot of heat from IR radiation.

A thought has occured though. The engine assembly spins faster when Serenity goes for a hard burn, is that an indication that it is generating a stronger rotating magnetic field in order to contain the exploisive reaction, and accelerate the reaction mass out the back?

Also the cowling on serenitys drive section opens out, could this be extra radiation shielding for the habitable zones of the ship for when radioactive drive reaction mass is being expelled?

Also do I see an Unofficial FireFly owners/technical manual in the making? That would be kind of interesting...

Completly unrelated to the discussion really, but may be of some interest. It seems that a lab has actually managed to do cold fusion for real this time:
Quote:

Unlike some previous claims of room-temperature fusion, this one makes intuitive sense: its just another way to get atoms close enough together for the strong force to take over and do the rest. Once the reaction got going, the scientists observed not only the production of helium nuclei, but other tell-tale signs of fusion such as free neutrons and high energy radiation.
This experiment has been repeated successfully and other scientists have reviewed the results: it looks like the real thing this time.

I always thought they were to focus the nuclear reaction like the engine bell on an Orion Drive.
