FALLENANGEL

Suffering from a terrible bout of insommia, I was watching the tv show Coming Attractions and they showed the trailer for Roman Polanski's new movie Oliver Twist and it opens the same gorram day as Serenity. Roman Polanski is a great director, I love the guy but should we be worried that Oliver Twist could take away Serenity's attention and whatnot? I know I am a lil worried. Not y'know, boucing-off-the-walls kind of worried, it just sometimes makes me stop and think for a moment. (wow. me, thinking.)
What do u guys think? Worried or cool as a cucumber?

May have been on the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Different target audiences, I think. Well - not if 'target audience' means a fan of great film direction, but otherwise, they're fairly different markets.

I'd worry a bit more about Corpse Bride (opening the week before). And maybe Flightplan, and Into the Blue. Have you heard anything about Lord of War?

Speaking of good directors (at least, if you like the weirdness), A History of Violence is being released on the same day. It's probably not a huge box-office draw, but Cronenberg is directing.

None of these films are sci-fi/action. It seems to me Serenity has that market cornered for the month (except for A Sound of Thunder, which opens today, so plenty of leeway there).

The thing I'd be worried about most is the rising price of gas.

OH NO! What horrible news! I was going to go to the NCBDMPP, but now that I know Oliver Twist comes out the same weekend, I think I'll cancel my plans and go see that instead!!

I wouldn't be worried. It's not going to be the next big blockbuster hit, I don't think. Personally, I couldn't stand the book, hated the musical, detested the old movie based on the musical. I have very little interested in seeing the new movie, unless it's very very well done. And even then, definitely not opening weekend.

So, cool as a cucumber. IMHO.

Corpse Bride is without a doubt the big threat - will only have been out a week, both in the US & UK, by the time Serenity opens. Reckon it will go down particularly well with us quirky Brits, and Serenity could have a job to dislodge it as the Number 1 film.

But you never can tell!

As I mentioned in the "How much will Serenity open with?" thread, I think if the studio thought Corpse Bride was any good, they'd be opening it as a Halloween movie a month later. Leads me to believe we're looking at at least the normal 50% dropoff from week 1 to week 2.

I just looked at Box Office Mojo, and while it had seemed Oliver Twist was listed in limited release before, now it's shown as wide release. Though considering that's a recent change (I think), I honestly wonder how many screens it's going to get.

I just checked out imdb.com, and it says that Oliver Twist is now opening Sept. 23rd. Maybe the stuido got scared by the buzz behind Serenity?

I personally don't think Serenity will have any problems. There doesn't seem to be much to compete with. Plus the fans. We'll go see it until our eyeballs fall out. Or until we learn every line of dialogue. I like the second option better myself.

Don't worry - Serenity will rule the boxoffice! But if by some crazy twist of fate Oliver beats it, then we'll have to draw lots to see who gets to go to Universal and say: "Please Sir, can we have some more?"

Not to worry. I just saw the trailer at the theater and the only threat I could see was Ben Kingsly, a fine actor but not enough to cause any trouble for our BDM. On the whole, it looked to be a pretty ordinary film from a much-done source. I'll wait for video on that one, and I am a Dickens fan.

ARODIN

Well... I thought the trailer for Oliver Twist looked kinda weak. And anyway as others have said the target audience is different. One is a super-hip sci-fi action adventure (with wonderful lovable characters and great story), and the other is a serious drama based on a literary work. Very different, and people in general lean toward wanting to see the former in the theater and renting the latter. :) That's my plan, at least.

Ok, I took one of my lil blue pills that calms me down...or what it the red ones? lol
Sorry for being such a drama queen but its something that making me wonder and worry a lil bit. Y'know, that people might not get the movie and it will flop( knock on wood) and then we won't have our Serenity#2 or 3 so we'll be just watching the dvd boxset and renting the movie or buying it when it comes out and wearing it out til the DVD player can't read the disc anymore. But y'know, I'm not worried. I just get like how a mama bear gets when her baby cubs are in danger. Very protective. Grrrrr...

Too much Animal planet.

I am certain Serenity will win at least one box office weekend tally.
It may not be the first one (Corpse Bride opens the week before, after all) but it could very well win the second or third weekend... kinda like Wedding Crashers... by building an audience slowly through word of mouth.

Never fear... we are a phenomenon and that makes us MIGHTY!
