Book's Monologue

Okay I tried to transcribe this but I think the first line is wrong, the video file I transcripted this from was choppy.

2517 A.D.

We moved out to a new solar system. Hundreds of new earths were terra-formed and colonized. The Central Planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point.

After the war, many of the Independents who fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system far from Alliance control. Out here people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies.

A ship would bring you work. A gun would help you keep it. A Captain's goal was simple: find a crew; find a job.... Keep Flying.

I'd appreciate if some one helped confirm my transcriptions.

i didn't even know that it was Book that was speaking. I just never put it together until in later episodes it changed to Mal.

I just always assumed it was a "voice of God" announcer setting the stage.

Thanks Jamie. The audio clip I downloaded begins with "We moved" but I thought I remembered more before. Oh, I had the 'Had' I just skipped over it by accident when I was writting it for this thread. I haven't moved my transcription to a word doc yet.

Just for completeness sake, here's the second and third intro done by Captain Tightpants (brackets are what was added for the third intro):

Here's how it is: [The]Earth got used up. So we [moved out and] teraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths. Some rich and flush with the new technologies. Some not so much. Central planets, them as formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under thier rule. A few idiots tried to fight it. Among them: Myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. [She's a tranport ship. Firefly class.] Got a good crew. Fighters. Pilot. Mechanic. We even picked up a preacher [for some reason]. And a bona fide companion. There's a doctor too. Took his genius sister out of some Alliance camp so they're keeping a low profile. [You understand.] You got a job, we can do it. Don't much care what it is.

The music for both (near as I can tell) is from Our Mrs. Reynolds (The Net). Not rightly sure where the music for the first into came from.

The third intro was (IMHO) obviously recorded cause the second one was in Mal speak: Don't waste any air on pronouncing a vowel any longer than you have to. Consonants should be shorter than that where possible. The second one is also much mopey-er. (I figure that's a plus.) All of Mal gets summed up in the second intro. "Dont' much care what it is." It's not bad in the third one either I guess. But he's a lot peppier in the third intro. Of course it wasn't too long before we got into "Previously on Firefly:"

Hmmm. I'd have to say the second one. I like the flavor of the first one just cause it feels all historical, but I think the second one captures the feel of the show. The third one feels a titch too jaunty. OTOH, the third one probably does the best job of putting the show in a nutshell, which is what the intro is for. It ain't for us, it's for THEM.

First (not The First, mind): Shepard Book telling the story of the time that the brave ship Serenity flew the skies of the Alliance. Maybe Book telling the story years after his travels with our fair crew.

Second: Mal having to explain to someone in "charge" what's going on. Vintage "There's no place I can be" Mal Reynolds.

Third: Mal trying to explain to a potential customer. Capt. Tightpants in his "up" mood.

Boy, that's just WAY too much thought for the thirty second intro of a canceled TV show!

PLEASE give us some more! Sooooon!

Myself, I like both

But the second one with Mal has a special something about it.

That part at the end where he says " Don't much care what it is " really brings in the sadness and empty feeling Mal has towards his post war existance. It is right up there with the part in the pilot where Jayne says " Any one you walk away from, and we got the goods. I count this as a win " and Mal turns and walks away with obvious pain in his eyes and mutters " Yeah we win "

I think the strongest part of the show is the broad emotional scale of the characters, it allows you to identify with them more so that more sterile shows such as say StarTrek

I don't think I was bashing or insulting StarTrek, at least it wasn't my intent, I was just comparing the styles of writing. The closest any StarTrek series went to writing culimative emotional conflict was DS9 and my feeling it was the best of all the ST shows.
My comment was meant more about style peferences and what I like and why more than anything else.

I am sure others enjoy the other style more so as well. and for other reasons.

Hey no worries, I don't like reading bashing comments either.

I think Scifi TV is very diverse and some feel quite strongly about their opinions.

StarTrek is very technological, it shows in the way they approach problems in their stories.

Firefly is more human, and about the journeys of life set in a very tough setting.

Babylon 5 At times was both and neither, with a huge helping of politics thrown in.

Farscape I think tends to be more about human drama ( as well as Muppet ) with a dose of politics

Each show has its strengths and weaknesses depending on the viewers preferences. I think the more a writer trys to do it all, the more cluttered the story becomes and the original message is lost.

All in all, I wish I had half the talent of the writers of any of the above shows. It must be great to work in any of these.

BTW If any Mutant Enemy people out there has a job opening for an ex Soldier / Aircraft Mechanic / Millwright who like to play around with writing.... CALL ME. Don't much care what it is.

Anyone remember "Book" being God's cousin, Rod aka "Heady" from that wonderful TV show TEEN ANGEL? That was a great show. I remember there was a little comercial thing and "Marty" comes out and since Ron Glass is only a floating head in the show, Marty says, "the sad truth is that the actor that plays him really IS that way in real life. That's right. He's only a head. *tear*"
And then Ron comes out and he has a body and all and he's just like "Marty!" It was funny.

Anyway...yeah, I like the monologue that's like "a ship will get you work. A gun will let you keep it..."

Anyone ever figure out whether it was a solar system (misnomer, if it isn't around Sol, that being the one and only sun, it's not a solar system) or a galaxy?

I figure solar system, we have no reason to suspect that they can travel at superrelitivistc speeds that would be necesary to navigae a galaxy. But it would have to be a big system, and at the edge of the galaxy if the revers got the full view of nothing.
