SERENITYRISING

So I don't know how many of you remember the thread I put up a few months ago about how Mike Standish of Movies.com bashed the BDM and dismissed its fans as "nerdlings."

Well, guess what. I found a link to his website on Whedonesque today, with some interesting news. Apparently Mike has actually seen the movie now and has changed his tune:

Serenity Now! I'm acquainted with nerds, but I'm not really one of them. At least that's what I keep telling myself. So this Joss Whedon sci-fi western sounded too nerdy, even for me. Well, I — and a theater full of soon-to-be-40-year-old virgins — saw a preview screening, and I can honestly say … it was awesome. In fact, it's inspired me to come out of the nerd closet! Where are my dice bag and Dungeon Masters Guide?

Now whose trying to get the taste of their own foot out of their mouth?

Mr. Standish has gone from ripping the BDM to trying to join the Browncoats. I don't think he's a Browncoat, just a really bad movie critic. But isn't it great to watch him eat his own words?

Edit: For those who think I'm being too hard on Mr. Standish, I'm adding on his initial comments posted on his site about the BDM:

Geeks in Space. It's kind of cute the way all the little nerdlings get excited when a new Serenity trailer appears. It's gonna break my heart when they're the only ones in the theater on opening night.

Perhaps you can now understand how satisfying it is to watch him try to endear himself to the Browncoats. I mean, I have nothing personal against the guy, its just clear that he will say anything to get people to like him. And I don't buy into it.

He's doing nothing of the sort - as usual he's desperately trying to suck up to movies and moviemakers he thinks are gonna make big bank in order to be 'hired-in' as yet another completely sychophantic movie "reviewer" who can be depended on to give stellar reviews to any piece of crap as long as the perks and money keeps rolling in.

That being said.. so now he thinks Serenity is gonna make big bank, and has started sucking up to it - this doesn't make him any kind of decent human being (he's not, trust me), it's just a handy barometer of what the crony-reviewers think.

So despite the slimy source, this is good news, cause if all the sycophants think it's gonna make big bank, it probably will.

Just don't mistake them for fans or even decent human beings.

On the whole I'm happy to go with the 'he's admitted he's wrong so lets not beat him up' school of thought on this one.

Stil, it's a bit annoying how people constantly refer to 'nerds' when talking about Serenity isn't it? I've got nothing against nerds. In fact, given that I'm posting on a discussion board about a sci fi western, I'm quite happy to be described as a nerd. But generally when people say 'nerd' what they really mean is (1) a man in his twenties or thirties who has no social skills but lots of technological gizmos, and (2) someone who obsesses about some weird genre thing that every non-nerd recognises as crap. It diminishes both the fans and the movie. It goes without saying that it doesn't capture the diversity of Firefly fans (although I've said it anyway).

Of course, pointing it out it just turns you into a moaning, sense-of-humourless nerd. You got your movie, so shut up and stop complaining, little nerd. The media necessarily works through stereotypes. What, you want political correctness for nerds? How about we deal with race, gender, sexuality and religion first? etc, etc.

But still, kind of irritating.

I can honestly say … it was awesome.

Pretty much sums it up.
